AIM Recycling Hamilton – Working with the Parkview West Community and
Investing in Hamilton

[HAMILTON, ON, September 7, 2019] AIM Recycling responds to Hamilton Parkview

Community Group to clarify AIM’s work with the Parkview West community. Recent comments
by this local community group imply that AIM Recycling Hamilton has not been responsive to
concerns brought forward by local residents.

We regularly hold meetings with the community.

We have been proactive in working with our neighbours in Parkview West. Over a year and a
half ago, we hired a professional facilitator who is an expert in community engagement to help
us build a relationship with the neighbours. She began meeting with them individually and in
small groups in April 2018.
A community meeting was held in June 2018 to learn more about their concerns and identify
ways AIM could address those concerns. Our facilitator went door to door in Parkview West,
delivering invitations for residents to join her in working on identifying ways AIM Recycling
could be better neighbours.
Thirty-nine residents attended the meeting where they worked together to explore issues
related to nighttime noise, weekend noise, and vibrations, followed by discussion focussed on
brainstorming solutions for the issues they identified.
The facilitator submitted a very detailed report of the issues and solutions that the residents
came up with. We have implemented most of the solutions suggested, such as having the crane
operators drop materials from lower levels, building a barrier, and reducing working hours on
weekends.
At that meeting, 12 volunteers signed up to join a Community Liaison Committee the facilitator
created on AIM’s behalf. About half of those people joined together to form the initial
Community Liaison Committee (CLC). The CLC meets quarterly to talk about changes at AIM and
their ongoing experiences as neighbours of our site. Although we have formal membership with
the CLC, we do invite others who have expressed concerns with AIM’s operations to join us at
meetings when they can.
We held a second community meeting this past April. Once again, the facilitator went door to
door in Parkview West with invitations for the residents to join us at the meeting.
Leslie Greener, AIM’s Senior Environmental Advisor, was there along with an AIM engineer and
two representatives from the acoustical engineering firm that we work with on our noise
modelling. We spend the evening answering every question the 44 residents who attended
had. The report from this meeting, which includes every question and answer, was emailed out
to all of the attendees and everyone on the community email list maintained by the facilitator.

Email updates are sent out to everyone in the community who has signed up
Every household that received an invitation to one of our community meetings was also invited
to join an email list for news and operational updates. The facilitator sends out regular email
updates to the community about changes to our operations, including every long weekend so
that the residents know what to expect from us.
Leslie’s email address and cell phone number, along with our complaints line is always included.
Neighbours are most welcome to contact us with their concerns.
If anyone would like to be added to the email list, they should send a note to
aimcommunitymeeting@gmail.com.
