CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Mathematics plays an important role in our everyday life and it has become an

indispensable factor for the progress of our present day world. It helps the man to give

exact interpretation for his ideas and conclusions.

Mathematics occupies a crucial and unique role in the human societies and

represents a strategic key in the development of the whole mankind. The ability to

compete, related to the power of technology and to the ability of social organization, and

the geometrical understanding of spacetime, that is the physical world and its natural

patterns, show the role of Mathematics in the development of a society (Parnell, 1995).

Everyone agrees that learning math can be difficult, but some people believe

math is important and some people believe math is not important. We may say, math is

important because math is everywhere (Green, 2009).

Teachers always look for strategies and techniques to help children in improving

their performance in mathematics. Mathematics needs a concrete approach to impact the

essence of math concepts, and theories into the learners’ lives. Hence, intervention has

become an important way for teachers to ensure that all students succeed in today’s high

stakes testing environment. Helping students who are struggling with mathematics

requires the teacher to choose an appropriate time and strategy for the learners. Without a

systematic approach, this can be a challenge for teachers who have many students in need

of help (Mata, 2012).

Mathematics is one of the greatest cultural and intellectual achievements of human-kind,

and citizens should develop an appreciation and understanding of the achievement,

including its aesthetic and even crucial aspects (Yara, 2009).

Although all careers require a foundation of mathematical knowledge, some are

mathematics intensive. More students must pursue on educational path that will prepare

them for life long work as mathematicians, statisticians, engineers and scientists. Hence,

in this changing world, those who understand and can do mathematics will have

significantly enhanced opportunities and options for shaping their futures. Mathematical

competence opens doors to productive futures. A lack of mathematical competence keeps

doors closed. Generally, it is an assumption that mathematics is only for the select few.

On the contrary, everyone needs to understand mathematics. All students should have the

opportunity and the support necessary to learn significant mathematics with depth and

understanding. There is no conflict between equity and excellence. Principles and

standards call for a common foundation of mathematics to be learned by all students.

This approach, however, does not imply that all students are alike. Students exhibits

different talents, abilities, achievements, needs and interests in mathematics.

Nevertheless, all students must have access to the highest-quality mathematics

instructional programs. Students with a deep interest in pursuing mathematical and

scientific careers must have their talents and interests engaged. Likewise, students with

special educational needs must have the opportunities and support they require to attain a

substantial understanding of the importance of mathematics (Olson, 2015).

This study was conducted in order for the researcher to determine the impressions and

importance of mathematics subject to students.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to determine the perceptions of students to mathematics subject.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the impressions of students towards mathematics subject?

2. What is the importance of mathematics subject to students?

3. How do these impressions affect the students learning mathematics?

Significance of the Study

Mathematics needs a concrete approach to impact the essence of math concepts, and

theories into the learners’ lives.

The study was anticipated to establish an understanding of impressions of students to

mathematics subject. Furthermore, the study could be of importance of the following:

Students. The findings of this study helped the students know and understand more about

mathematics subject. In that, it helped the students motivated themselves about

mathematics.

Parents. This study helped the parents guide their children to pursue their collegiate

studies in line with their abilities in mathematics.

Teachers. The result of this study helped teachers well-informed about their studies

understanding on mathematics. Furthermore, it acquainted teachers with the skills and

abilities needed to develop students interest in mathematics.

Other Researchers. Researchers endowed with benchmark information that laid the

foundation to further researches on the factors that could lead to better instructions

towards mathematics subject.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study focused and limited only on the impressions of students to mathematics

subject.

This study determined the impressions of students towards mathematics subject. It will

determined the importance of mathematics subject to students. It also determined how did

these impressions affect the students learning mathematics.

To obtain the qualitative data, interview was done to the participants on the First week

of February. It was limited to no more than 3 participants at Sanchez Mira School of Arts

and Trades students to determine their impressions to mathematics subject.

Definition of Terms

For the future readers/researchers to fully understand this research work, the following

terms are defined within the context of this study.

Students refers to the students of Sanchez Mira School of Arts and Trades.

Impressions refers to the perspective or thoughts of a participants on certain things its

either interesting or not.

Importance of Mathematics Subject refers to the significance of the subject to the

students in their daily life whether it is useful or not.
