ASSESSMENT
The Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka, recently unveiled plans for two (2) new 11-storeyd Acute Care
Hospital in Pelawatta, Battaramulla, adjoining the Sri lanka Parliament as specified below in the location
plan. HGA Architects designed the new facility as part of a master plan that reveals a “hospital in a park,”
where a green space that connects patients, visitors, and staff to the benefits of nature.
The Acute Care Hospital will include private patient rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, accommodations
for overnight family visits, and the flexibility to incorporate ICU facilities. The facility uses a Process
Neutral Design approach that utilizes, assembled rather than constructed parts to create a flexible, neutral
platform where rooms and spaces can quickly be reconfigured depending on patient needs, advances in
care, and changing programs.
Visitors will enter the building from the west-facing entrance and be greeted by a two-level front lobby
with a gift shop, dining area, and open space for community performances from local choirs or ballet
companies. Access roads for the building can be formed through the, Japan Sri Lanka Freindship Road and
Pahalawela road. The land is of 8.18 acres and the two buildings (one is Square shaped where as the other
is Rectangle shaped) are connected by an overhead walkway bridge with each other.
