1.0 SCOPE
This procedure describes the minimum requirements for Paint Coating Thickness measurement on
ferretic steel pipes, Vessels, tanks and other components using Elcometer Digital Dry film coating
thickness meters. This scope includes the methods of calibration, evaluation and reporting.

2.0 REFERENCES

2.1 ASTM D1186 - Non-Destructive Examination

2.2 ASME Sec VIII Division 1, 2 and 3 – Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers

3.2 ASNT - American Society for Non-Destructive Testing

4.0 PROCEDURE

4.1 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATIONS

4.1.1 Personnel involved in this testing shall have adequate experience in the field of
Coating thickness measurement.

4.2 EQUIPMENT

4.2.1 Basic Unit

The basic electronic instrument Elcometer is based on Eddycurrent/magnetic

induction principle to measure the coating substrate thickness over ferro magnetic
materials.

4.2.2 Sensor

A hall effect sensor is applied over the coating to be measured.

4.3 CALIBRATION

4.3.1 Calibration of Base Unit

The basic unit shall be calibrated yearly or after any major repair/service done to
the equipment and records shall be provided to the company.

4.3.2 Daily Calibration Tests

The Operator shall carry out and keep record of daily calibration checks with the
supplied standard foils.

4.4.2 Calibration Records

Coating Thickness examination system calibration requirement and identity of

Thickness foils shall be included in the coating Thickness calibration records.

4.4.3 Calibration Foils (Coating thickness Standards)

To calibrate the base unit with sensor, the following foils are used.

 50 150 250 and 500 micron thickness and zero plate.

4.5 INFORMATION TO OPERATOR

The following information shall be provided to the operator before start of test.

a) Material type grade & form (cast, rolled, forged etc.)

b) Details of the previous reports
c) Differing thickness
d) Referencing code section
e) Identification of the area to be tested and as to be appeared in the report.

4.6.1 Identification
Identification and locations of examination area shall be shown on an
identification plan. The marking shall be in accordance with the referencing code
requirements. Each examination area shall be located and identified by a system of
referencing points placed on the component. The system shall permit identification
of each examination area and designation of regular intervals along its length of
the area.

4.6 TESTING METHOD

Conduct the general Probe zero and calibration with the thickness standards provided. Verify that
the readings are within +/- 3% of the indicated value. Now the instrument is calibrated accurately
to measure the coating thickness.

4.8 INSPECTION REPORT

The examination details (identification, location of each recorded coating thickness

reading and identification of the operator who carried out of each thickness examination)
will be reported in the format as shown on the attached report form.

5.0 SAFETY
The area of examination shall have adequate lighting and ventilation.
Fire and Safety Regulation shall be adhered to at all times.
Manufacturer's recommendations for storage and usage of chemicals shall be strictly
followed.
