CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Of The Study

At the this time, the use of figure of speech in daily conversations is a matter of
course even often easy to find, both in the school environment and outside the school. In
contrast to the Majas in ancient times which was only used by poets to make literature. At
that time, its use was very rigid and old-fashioned, because the language used at that time was
very stiff and old-fashioned, so it was very difficult to understand and understand. In contrast
to now, the use of majas in everyday life can be referred to as art in conversation. Even often
without realizing it when talking to anyone, someone often inserts a series in a conversation.

Figure of speech is often considered as a synonym for language style, but actually
majas are included in the style of language. Figure of speech are part of the style of language
used to express feelings both verbally and in writing and can cause reactions by readers and
listeners in the form of responses. But in reality between the figure of speech and the style of
language became a conflict which indeed was rarely mentioned because of the perceived
similarity between the style of language and the figure of speech. Figure of speech is a
language, a beautiful language that is used to elevate and enhance effects by introducing and
comparing certain objects or things that can change and give rise to certain values or
connotations.

Figure of speech has many varieties, including metaphor, simile, hyperbole,

personification and others. Each assembly has a different understanding. In the author's
writing this time, the author was interested in analyzing the figure of speech , metaphorical
and simile. Because in its use, many people, especially among students, often incorrectly use
the two majors, where the metaphorical approach is considered a simile, and conversely the
simile assembly is considered a metaphor.

In this study the author wants to know the ability of students to analyze writing or
reading, especially in English-language novels related to language style, namely the use of
simile and metaphor. In related matters, the author chose the novel The Little House by Laura
Inggals Wilder for analysis. This novel is an old novel based on the true story of Laura
Inggals Wilder, which was published around the year 80, and now the story is re-appointed as
the latest novel by having 7 series, even packed into a film. So in this analysis, the author
took a series to analyze.

The author was interested in the novel because the author wanted to analyze the
meaning of the figure of speech , metaphorical and simile contained in the novel. So that the
readers are able to distinguish figure of speech, simile and metaphor in the novel, not only in
novels but in everyday life.
