 Chapter 1

Introduction

Adapting technology is very useful for our generation, especially choosing a

university. Selecting a university is one of the most difficult choices for an incoming

student, a decision that can decide their career and for profession development. EVSU-

OCC does not have a website of their own, students or visitor’s visits university grounds

physically. To resolve this problem, the researchers proposed a dynamic and user-

friendly website for Eastern Visayas State University Ormoc City Campus.

Using website, students and other visitors can update information about school

virtually. The first impression of this website is to highlight the university's best qualities

and to show how welcoming the university community is. Once this is made and

implemented in EVSU-OCC, the website can provide a broad variety of information,

from university events, academics offered, university updates, university learning

activities and organization links or the website outside that support the university. This

information will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year online.

a. Background of the Study

School is very important for making a good impression for demographic groups

such as staff/administration, parents, students, alumni, and the community. Some people

often visit the website before going to university campuses. The website is being used as

a tool to evaluate features such as events, the course offered, location and accreditations.

To understand more about the website and university, we must first know their origin or

history.

Eastern Visayas State University Ormoc City Campus (formerly Leyte Institute of

Technology – OCSAT and Ormoc Satellite Campus) is a unique public tertiary institution

in Ormoc City. It was a product of the merging of the two independent institutions the

Ormoc City School of Arts and Trades and the former Leyte Institute of Technology –

Ormoc City Satellite Campus. As a separate educational entity, the Ormoc City School of

Arts and Trade (OCSAT) started its operation in 1999. It was created through Republic

Act 8379 in July 1997 from the conversion of Ormoc City National High School

(OCNHS) authorizing it to offer degree courses in industrial arts and education.

On August 27, 2002, it was integrated as CHED supervised institution to the Leyte

Institute of Technology through Board Resolution No. 49 Series of 2002 and was

renamed as Leyte of Technology (Ormoc City School of Arts and Trades). Two years

later or in 2004, it was merged with the Ormoc Satellite Campus and was renamed again

as Leyte Institute of Technology – Ormoc City Campus through a Memorandum Order

No. 005, Series of 2004 issued by the former President Bonifacio S. Villanueva. On the

other hand, the Ormoc Satellite Campus was an external Campus of Leyte Institute of

Technology, which also started operation in 1999 with the request of former

Congresswoman Ma. Victoria L. Locsin. The satellite Campus was established to offer

Engineering courses for students coming from Ormoc and nearby towns who could not

go anymore to Main Campus in Tacloban because of the distance.

In August 2004 the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act. No 9311 converting

Leyte Institute of Technology into Eastern Visayas State University including Ormoc

Campus and other external campuses. In a short period, the Ormoc City Campus attained

the highest step in the educational ladder – the University status.

b. Statement of the Problem

The general problem of the study is how to develop the Eastern Visayas State

University Ormoc City Campus Website. Specific problems are encountered by the

researchers are the following:

 How will the students, parents, and other visitors’ effort, resources and time be

lessened in searching school information updates?

 How to manage events and schedules at the university.

 How will the EVSU-OCC be known outside Ormoc City?

 How will the upcoming students and visitors know the update without visiting

campus premises?

 How to urge visitors to enroll in the university.

 How to ask clarification if the visitors/students are troubled.

 How workers secure, organize and lessen the information dissemination.

c. Objective of the Study

The general objective of the study is to develop a dynamic user-friendly website for

EVSU-OCC. Also, to assess the school website by the staff and students in terms of

content, effectiveness, and usability, to test the major difference in the assessment of the

two groups of users, promoting EVSU-OCC outside Ormoc City and to propose

measures that will enhance the website with the following features:

 The FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

 Forum

 Viewing all the information about the university.

 Login using a registered account

 Download/upload newsletter and transparency seal

 Creating/viewing/editing calendar of activities

 Posting and viewing announcement, news, events

 Quick links to other EVSU campuses

d. Significance of the Study

The sectors/persons/organizations that will benefit this system are, Selected Staff.

The finding of this study is that most educational institutions are technology. The handful

of school works of the staff may take the time that's why the researchers implement this

website for the benefit of the students and their purpose on knowing the school just to

visit the said website and seek what has to offer.

Student will benefit from this system because it helps the students to have easy

access to the website and inquire about what they want to ask in the university without

visiting it. For example, asking about the courses that the university offers. They will

easily figure out how or what program they want the most and appealing personal for

their studies. They can gather more information from this website if they are planning to

enroll in the school.

Visitors help the school in many ways; they can help EVSU-OCC grow and well-

known around the world by graduating, passing board exams and participating in big

events. They can see many features on this website that can convince them to enroll, will

receive updates, requirements, and schedules that will be posted by the university

website. The visitors help promote the school by increasing more traffic. Lessening

expenses costs, and allow more cooperative habits of working, by crowd sourcing.

The Future Researchers will also be benefited especially these days Hi-

technology is affecting and changing fast especially to those who seek more information

about schools or universities. Furthermore, this study can be served as a reference to

other researchers who happen to have a relative issue. The website also reflects the

university in terms of morals, attitude towards the future and acceptance of current

technology that researchers needed.

It has a slight bit of research that can help the researchers encouraged. They can get

more idea on this website by the features and styles that built-in it, they will improve and

put some distinctive attributes in the system. Lastly, Eastern Visayas State University

Ormoc City Campus will benefit from this system especially that they don't have their

website. This will make the university more competitive and versatile in the future due to

the demands and needs of the people.

e. Scope and Limitation of the Study

Scope

The researcher formulated a scope to identify the boundaries of the study. The

website, which will be the output of the study, is going to uplift Eastern Visayas State

University Ormoc City Campus method of promoting, informing, and handling data to a

computerize one such as, allowing students, parents, and visitors to view information of

the campus, and allowing visitors to access anytime and anywhere as long as they want

and as long as there is an internet connection.

Limitations

The limitation of this study is that it does not feature enrollment, viewing student

information and grades but there is a quick link to be put in this matter. This does not

have an application on phone but it is responsive for any android browser phones. This

does not have a transaction like paying organization fee and other fees. This system does

not include SMS notification.

f. Definition of Terms

 Browser - is a program that displays HTML files and used to navigate the World

Wide Web and used to browse our system.

 Media - a communication tool used to deliver information or data. That is

intended to reach and address a large target group or audience. It is used on posting video

clips for events and activities.

 File Transfer Protocol - a network that is used to transfer computer files between

the user and the server. It is used for transferring data or files to post.

 Server - a computer program that provides and manages access to a service

network that keeps information or files.

 Administrators - are responsible for maintaining and updating the website. It will

be a user-friendly website and ensure the best experience of the user

 Campus community - is composed of the faculty, staff, administration, students,

trustees, alumni, parents. These are the person who can use the system.
 Chapter II

METHODOLOGY

In conducting our research study, many research techniques and procedures are

involved. It includes interviewing the head of the EVSU-OCC and had a few questions to

learn more about our university for the system. The researchers also interviewed other

offices on the campus to gain more knowledge about the flow of posting university

information and activities.

The second one is the observation, the researchers focused on how they process

the current system through posting bulletin boards and social media and to those who are

in-charge of posting the information. After doing some observation, we gathered enough

information to start our study which is about EVSU-OCC Website.

The important one is the desk researching; it means to do a desk sitting research

using a computer or books. It is very effective for the researchers and can be used for a

starting phase of the research. It fetches most of the basic information that could be used

for our study. It involves data collection from other existing resources, but it is frequently

considered as a low-rate method unlike field researching. Though, it could be a waste of

time if the researcher does not have knowledge about this kind of research technique.

a. Review of Related Literature and Studies

LPUB High school portal

It is a social network of students where they can socially connect to other

students and faculties while learning. It also makes it easier for people to access

important information from anywhere, at any time of day. The developed website

ensures the relevance of its content to the needs of the clients. The researcher decided

to design the LPUB High School website that could help the university to advertise its

curricular offerings and services beyond the borders of the Asia Pacific region.

Long Island School District’s websites

In our research, this website is a gateway to parental involvement whereas a

quality website can provide helpful resources for parents, information on school

events and a place for parents to view student progress and work. The benefits of the

website are linking schools in the district, developing communication in classes,

grade levels, and cultures, encouraging parental involvement, presenting information

to visitors about the school and acquisition of technology skills. The sample for this

study was selected from a total of 127 school districts that make up Long Island's

public schools. Full lists of Nassau and Suffolk county schools were retrieved from

the Long Island Schools website.

The system will be dealing with different activities in the school like showing

exam results, cultural activities and announcements. Currently, the organization uses

a manual announcement on our bulletin board without proper management. This way

of human thinking will create new ideas to manage a proper way of announcing by

using the system.

Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School website

Vosloorus Comprehensive Secondary School needs a website to reach out to the

community and also to serve and support the student, principal, teachers, SGB and

parents. The reason why they create this website is that it is an excellent tool for

communicating with the school's and learners by posting newsletters, photos and

other news and also It is an excellent tool for marketing your school to school-

seekers. The design of the website has the homepage, Gallery, Academic, Sport, and

contact. These five pages will be "hardwired" into the new design by Vosloorus

Comprehensive Secondary School and links to them will appear in the horizontal

menu bar at the top of the page.

Share and explore discussion forum objects on the Calico website

One major result of the Calico website is to make forum objects easier to share

and explore in education. Thus, the website contributes to the dialogue between

researchers and practitioners. The Calico shared workspace includes novel tools that

propose several ways to display the contents of a forum, to calculate quantitative and

qualitative indicators about authors, interactions, topics and to offer new ways to

display global or local information about a forum.

STI COLLEGE

STI College website is an online school website that helps the visitors or the new

graduate to choose a course. STI College has a program for both college and Senior

High School. Formerly known as System Technology Institute, is the largest network

of for-profit information technology based colleges in the Philippine. This private

college system offers a curriculum including accountancy and business

administration, computer science, education engineering, and health care. This

website will help you choose your career soon.

VSU

The University's mission of generating knowledge and technologies is aimed to

contribute to the advancement of knowledge and understanding, and the national

goals of innovation, economic development, social development, and environmental

sustainability. High-quality research enables VSU academic staff to expand the

knowledge base, incorporate new ideas and apply innovation and into what is being

taught. For years now, it has generated diverse breakthroughs in crop and livestock

production, crop protection, plant breeding, postharvest technologies, food

processing, and biotechnology.

UP DILIMAN

Research has always been embedded in the culture of the University of the

Philippines. The largest constituent unit of the national university has one of the most

diversified program offerings in the Philippines with 27 degree-granting units in the

fields of science and engineering, social sciences, management, economics and law,

education, and arts and humanities.

AMA UNIVERSITY

AMA University is a top choice for IT-based education in the Philippines and a

member of the AMA Education System. Offers Senior High School, Bachelor's

Degree, Graduate Programs and Online Education.AMA University is the first ICT

University in the Philippines and Asia. The university serves as the flagship brand of

the AMA Education System. AMA Computer College came into existence on June

1981. It extended its services through a four-year Bachelor of Science degree

in Computer Science.

Oxford has a distinctive collegiate structure. Students and Academics benefit

and to college or hall, small, interdisciplinary academic community. The University

of Oxford has four academic divisions, within which are individual departments,

faculties or other centres. Click on the headings below to reveal the different

departments, faculties or centres that make up the four academic divisions, or scroll to

the bottom for a video explanation of the remit of each division's research. The

Oxford university website offers the upcoming student the insight of the school such

as facilities and resources, teaching and admission. Unlike other School website the

Oxford has a unique website that will help the Graduates to find a job by just simply

clicking the job button.

University of Harvard

Harvard University is devoted to excellence in teaching, learning, and research,

and to developing leaders in many disciplines who make a difference globally. The

University, which is based in Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts, has an

enrolment of over 20,000 degree candidates, including undergraduate, graduate, and

professional students. Harvard has more than 360,000 alumni around the world. What

makes the school website similar to our proposed system is, it has a calendar view of

upcoming event and it is called “Academic Calendar”. The website also offers course

and you can register through it on their website.

b. Conceptual Framework

The input-process-output of a research model in our study contains different

concepts that could make a system to be developed. In making the proposed system the

researchers decided to use the IPO (Input Process Output).

The input is how the proposed system gathered data. And use different methods

and techniques to gather information and improve the current system. To conduct our

research the letter that was made for the interview must be approved. The interview is a

must to gather information and interview need some questionnaires to be asked.

Observation helps to check and avoid some possible problems for the improvement of the

system.

The process is when you analyzed the study. If it was successfully executed by

the proponents, then the objective of the proposed system will be achieved. In the

process, how will you start? That is what planning is. What language is to be used? Does

it need hardware? What kind of material is needed and the estimated time to finish? The

analysis is to understand the current situation of the study to look for the objective.

Brainstorming is done to contribute ideas from the group.

Then there is the output. The complete data collected is output and the planning;

the insight of the proposed system will work the given problems and the outcome of it. If

the system data is collected and the planning of the proposed system is complete. It will

give the system insight into our work and the solution of the given problems.

c. Documentation of Current System

Eastern Visayas State University Ormoc City Campus current system about

campus information, announcement and news are manually operated. This information is

a scholarship, upcoming school events, and schedule. Also, if you are new to this

university, they have information on what course and subject they offer. They are also

using Facebook for posting this information.

The important announcement is taken from the main EVSU campus and

distributed accordingly in other offices. They post it using a bulletin board around the

campus. Parents, students, and other visitors visit campus premises to view updates about

the university that will consume their time, money and energy. These visitors or students

can ask for feedback or questions at the office for clarification.

c.1 Description of the Current System

The Eastern Visayas State University Ormoc City Campus does not have a

website that would let students and visitors update school information without visiting

school premises. The visitors or students can only see the updates through bulletin boards

placed around the campus. The information posted is either from the main campus or the

Ormoc campus itself. JO’s the one who posted this thing for avoiding false news.

This type of system consumes more time; however, today’s generation uses

almost everything is done easily and fast through modern technology. But the campus has

not yet met the systematic way of using a digitalized system that can give more accuracy

without consuming more time. It would be better if the campus will have a computerized

system that can help their job accomplish fast.

c.2 Personnel/Equipment Used by the current System

PERSONNEL - EVUS-MAIN personnel provides information using an e-mail

address. The JO’s (Job orders) of the SASO will manage all the information only in the

SASO section and it depends upon the concern of a student then post to their bulletins

inside or outside the university or ask the SSG to post it on the social media, all the

departments have their own JO’s but they do not have a page on social media, only SSG

uses pages on social media for posting and giving feedback to students but it is not

effective because they cannot give all the information because they do not have all the

information, they only give and post what SASO or other offices are given to them.

EQUIPMENT - The assigned JO’s will use bond papers to print what

information they wanted to post in the bulletin boards. Each organization does the same

thing using a pen to write in a piece of paper then post near to their department area.

Therefore every student needs to go to each department building to see some

information post according to their concerns.

e. Data gathering procedures

Data Gathering is one of the most important techniques as it is a guide when making

a system. The data that was gathered by the researchers using the method and strategies

are research, interview, and observation is a big help in terms of collecting data and

information. With the use of these techniques and strategies, the researchers gather

information and suggestion and the data that has been collected will be very useful to

improve the proposed system.

Research is one of the techniques used for researchers to collect some existing

information and data regarding the proposed system. It is useful for researchers to

improve the proposed system. Also, it can be used as a guideline for the researchers are

attentive to any problem they encounter for the proposed system.

An interview is also a technique that can also help the researchers collect information

to the consumers by asking some questions that needed by the researchers. In interviews,

the researchers or consumers can conclude some suggestions. The suggestion or the idea

given by the person who was interviewed can take note by the researchers to expand the

idea or the data.

The observation was used to come up with the proposed system. It helps the

researchers how the current system works. By using this technique, the researchers can

now add to the information for the use of improving the current system.
