1 Introduction
This document gives high level guidelines when upgrading from IBM Cognos
ReportNet to IBM Cognos 8 BI. This doc should be used in conjunction with
the upgrade steps laid out in Chapter 4 of the IBM Cognos 8 Installation and
Configuration guide.

The goal of this document is to be able to easily back out in case of an

unforeseen issue.

Upgrading
1. On the IBM Cognos ReportNet server, created a full deployment file.

2. Using a dev server, install and configure IBM Cognos 8 to a new directory
using a new content store DB. Make sure IBM Cognos 8 is up and running.

3. Copy the IBM Cognos ReportNet deployment file in the deployment folder
of IBM Cognos 8 and perform an import of the content. (Please refer to
product documentation on details of deployment imports).

During this step the content will be updated to IBM Cognos 8.

4. Once the upgrade is complete, verify the content is what is expected.

Check log files for any errors.

5. Log cases where appropriate to have any issues fixed, testcases will be
required (incl. at a minimum a IBM Cognos ReportNet and IBM Cognos 8
version of: report spec, sample data, model and prompt values. Possibly the
content store)

6. If an upgrade is deemed successful, move the IBM Cognos 8 content store

a production database.

7. Install IBM Cognos 8 to a new directory on production. Use different ports

then the IBM Cognos ReportNet if you wish to have it running while you
verify the installation.

8. Point the IBM Cognos 8 install to the IBM Cognos 8 content store on the
production database.

9. Verify the installation/upgrade is acceptable.

10. Once verification is complete, shut down the IBM Cognos ReportNet
install and start using IBM Cognos 8.

3 Report Upgrade (Single report)

RSUpgrade.bat / RSUpgrade.sh is a standalone utility that upgrades a single report
specification at a time outside of the IBM Cognos 8 environment. It is an
unsupported utility.

Here are the instructions on how to use it.

1. Open the report in Cognos ReportNet 1.1 Report Studio.

2. Select “Tools/Copy Report To Clipboard”.
3. Paste report in a text editor that supports UTF-8 (such as XML-Spy or
Notepad).
4. Save as an XML file (say “CRN.xml”).
(Note: If you paste in Notepad, make sure you select “UTF-8” as the
encoding in the “Save As” window).
5. In a command window, go to the c8 bin directory and type the following
command:

RSUpgrade CRN.xml C8.xml

Where CRN.xml is the file you just saved that contains the IBM Cognos
ReportNet report specification and C8.xml is the name of the file that will
contain the IBM Cognos 8 report specification

6. Open C8.xml in your UTF-8 aware editor, select all and copy to clipboard.
7. In IBM Cognos 8 Report Studio, select “Tools/Open Report From
Clipboard”.

Now in order to use this report in IBM Cognos 8, you must open the report up
against the upgraded package from IBM Cognos ReportNet.
