Case Title: Sun Street Supply’s Dilemma

I. CASE BACKGROUND

Vice Ganda is a working loan associate who hopes to be promoted into a loan officer in
the establishment of Sun Street Supply. She gets the job and proceeds to successfully carry
out her designated duties as a loan associate. However, her manager has expressed concern
about the young individual worker.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Will the addition of a brand new member/worker who is of young age in an establishment
that is dominated by seniors 50 and above will flatten the balance of the establishment’s
conventional way of selecting employees?

III. OBJECTIVES

ABM 125 – ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT |i

After hopefully solving the problem in this case study, we must consider on how to:
- Produce continuous systematic betterment of the establishment.
- Gather a good percentage of efficient workers.
The expected results must solve the problem of workers who are:
- At a disadvantage when it comes to experience.
- Workers who have troubled affiliations with other co-workers that are older than them.
IV. AREAS OF CONSIDERATION

To further analyze the problem and issues of the case, there are factors that need to
be considered to formulate applicable/suitable strategies. By doing this, you need to perform
a SWOT Analysis to determine the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the
organization/business being studied or evaluated.

SWOT
ASPECTS DETERMINED
COMPONENT
S S1. By hiring a young worker, employee productivity will
STRENGTHS be enhanced because they are more active and
have better mobility.
S2. The business has been continuous for almost a
hundred years which makes it a competitive and
successful establishment in persuading consumers
to make negotiations with them.
S3. Numerous talents in the workplace have effectively
carried out their duties for 10 decades which shows
how consistent they are in producing their assets.
W W1. The business’ employment methods focus strongly
WEAKNESSES on seniors which can possibly lead to slow
production of services because younger workers are
more flexible and more efficient in working.
W2. The business might need to apply diversity into their
roster because unlike people who are in their late
20’s, seniors have a good probability of being
exposed to heart attacks since men suffer from these
at an older age with the average of 66 years old
while women 50 and above are more prone unless
they are given reasonable breaks.
W3. Always hiring old workers will sometimes become an
invaluable asset to the business because when it
comes to business, you want to achieve a goal and
exceed it after accomplishing it which old workers
will have a sluggish process.
O O1. The business may have regional or international
OPPORTUNITIES connections with other businesses due to its long
reputation of being a competitive business for years.

ABM 125 – ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT | ii

O2. The infrastructure or the overall environment of the
business will prosper because of its uninterrupted
cash flow.
O3. The business might be subject to other deals and
contracts that can benefit them because of their wide
array of connections, seeing as there are also
contractors in this business.
T T1. There may be better businesses that can make Sun
THREATS Street Supply topple to the ground.
T2. The inefficiency of old workers may decrease the
business’ opportunities in growth as well as financial
endeavors.
T3. There will be threats existing in the form of cyber
attacks. Since workers in the business are old, they
might not be well-versed when it comes to new
innovations of technology and its modern
developments. Hackers that are dangerous will
venture into the mainframe and steal information in
order to make money.

V. ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION

Our two propositions when it comes to the main problem of the case study is to:

1.) Introduce a fresh set of workers into the business.

Old workers might be slower than younger ones but they are still knowledgeable with their
expertise in business so adding variety into the workplace isn’t a terrible idea if we are to be
careful in who we select as workers.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

1.) Smoother transition in working.

2.) Things might be done a lot quicker.
3.) Younger workers know what is
trending and might help in the
business by giving ideas.

1.) The workers might not yet be experts in

the business due to new work experience.
2.) Opinion-making might focus on smaller
scales of ideas and experiences
3.) Misunderstanding might happen when
younger people focus more on their pride and
ego rather than their attitude.

ABM 125 – ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT | iii

2.) There is also another proposition as a consultant which is to be open-minded when it comes to a selection of candidates
suitable for positions in the business

VI. RECOMMENDATION
I would highly recommend that the business needs to introduce a myriad of workers who are obviously younger and at
the same time can cooperate with the older workers so that seniors who are employees in the business can take it easy but at
the same time also experience a fair load of objectives. As stated by a study of Portland State University, “older workers are
easily open to stress than younger workers because employers don’t provide them with the support and resources to do their
jobs in a manner that’s satisfactory”. In one of the study’s recommendations, “older workers are more susceptible to stress in
the face of unfairness than younger workers”. The business can help workers about how decisions are made and implemented,
valuing employee input which ultimately means that younger workers evidently don’t deal with a lot of stress as most of what
older workers experience resulting in them creating more opportunities and success in financial decisions. And finally, with one
of Bodner’s researchers of the study’s recommendations, they also highly suggest that “a business should be more open when
it comes to diversity” with Yaldiz being a fellow researcher mentioning that “with the workforce of today becoming more open
to choices, it is important to understand the differences between younger and older workers to help them cope with the demands
of their work lives more effectively”.
VII. PLAN OF ACTION
From your recommended ACA, develop a plan of action or series of activities that is well coordinated/synchronized from the
top management down to the first line. Moreover, indicate the person responsible to perform each task involve in that plan of
action, and how long will it take the personnel or group of personnel/people to accomplish/complete such particular task.
Thereafter, set a realistic time frame for each activity.

VIII. POSSIBLE FUTURE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

A possible future potential problem is of course the competition Sun Street Supply will inevitably face. Even with plans in
improving our business, there will always be a contender that can exceed in all aspects better than one business in terms of
production, efficiency, employee productivity and connections to various kinds of businesses. There is also a risk in environmental
factors such as the cleanliness of the business because in order for a business to function properly, the area must be orderly and
hospitable for potential negotiators to discuss future ordeals with higher-ups from other businesses, for the employees to carry out
their work appropriately without contracting any diseases from an unsanitary environment as well as meetings for the directors and
managers.

CASE 7: Flippant Vice Ganda

Vice Ganda, age 26, is a consumer loan associate at a large downtown branch of
Sun Street Supply. Her expertise centres on processing loans for vehicles, boats, large
home appliances, and furniture. Vice Ganda hopes to soon be promoted to a loan officer
and then perhaps a bank manager several years later. The loan applications she works
with come through handwritten forms at the bank as well as in digital form from the bank’s
many retail partners.

Sun Street Supply is almost 100 years old, but it thoroughly modern in its business
processes and human resource management policies. For more than ten years Sun
Street Supply management has placed considerable emphasis on hiring older people and
men and women of different races and ethnic groups because the majority of its
customers are 50 years or older.

During a recent performance evaluation, Vice Ganda’s manager Dianne informed

her that she was doing an above –average job in terms of carrying out her duties as a
loan associate, including the evaluation of loan risks. Dianne, however, expressed
concern about how well Vice Ganda was working smoothly and cooperatively with older
co-workers and customers.
