Design Released for Golf Course Clubhouse

By Dick Myers

Work is progressing on the design for

the new clubhouse at Chesapeake Hills
Golf Course in Lusby. An update was
presented by Parks and Recreation Di-
rector Shannon Nazzal to the Calvert
County Board of County Commission-

Nazzal explained that the proposed
design was intended to represent “a rural
Calvert County feel” with its barn-like
appearance and high-pitched roof.

some background on the project. She

this, a committee was formed to purchase the depart-

In 1943 they would move into a new two-bay firehouse
next to the courthouse on Main Street.
The history goes on to say: “1956 started a 29-year era
when Vernon D. Horsmon, Sr. became fire chief. By 1959,
the two-bay firehouse was full, with three engines and
a tanker, and talk was started about building a new fire-
house.” That dream was realized in 1960 when a new one-
story, four-bay firehouse was constructed, followed by a
1984 addition. Those structures stood on a spot on Routes

Protect your plants from winter weather

or the majority of gardening enthusiasts,
gardening is a warm weather activity. While
some people live in climates that make it
possible to enjoy gardening year-round, those
who don’t often lament the end of the gardening
season.
Winter might not be conducive to gardening, but
the arrival of cold weather does not necessarily
mean a gardener’s work is done until the following

The Calvert High School Envirothon team

captured Calvert County’s first state champion-
ship in the 29th Annual Maryland State Envi-
rothon Competition. The team was honored by
the Board of Education at the August 8 meeting.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Daniel D.
Curry, said, “We are so proud of our first En-

evidence of their commitment to learning about
of environmental issues. We wish them all the
best in their future studies.”
At the state competition, team members Mi-
chael Deffinbaugh, Krissy Dube, Grace Miller,
Ben Springer, and Vincent Sullens finished first
in the Soils, Wildlife and Forestry category and
second in Aquatics.
The team is coached by Chuck Gustin, Cal-

Linda Subda of Chespax and the following
county organizations: Calvert Soil Conserva-

The team represented the state of Maryland
at the National Envirothon competition in
North Carolina and earned an impressive 10th
