Exercise 2 (Operation on Functions and Its Composite)

Solve the following:

1. Define the following functions and determine the domain of the resulting function: (a)
f+g; (b) f-g; (c) f*g; (d) f/g; and (e) g/f.
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 5; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 1
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 1
3. 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 + 4; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 4
1
4. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 ; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥

5. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 1; 𝑔(𝑥) = 3𝑥 − 2
2. For the function f and g and the number c, compute (f og) (c) by two methods: (a) Find
g(c) and use that number to find f(g(c)); (b) Compute (f o g)(x) and use that value to find
(f o g)(c).
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥; 𝑔(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 5; 𝑐 = 4
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 2 − 36; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥; 𝑐 =
3. Define the following functions and determine the domain of the composite function: (a)
fog; (b) gof; (c) fof; (d) gog.

1. 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 − 2; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 2
1
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 1; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥
3. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 2; 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 7
