Intended as a house for a joint family that is one of the business
powerhouses of Nanded city, the home is an attempt to
accommodate the traditional norms of the joint family setup for two
brothers, their parents and their families within the contemporary
context of modern urban living. Epitomising traditional values for
a multi-generation family that has a progressive lifestyle and loves
to entertain. The design brief was to conceive a house that would
hold the family bonded together, be minimalist in its look and feel,
without compromising on comfort.
Conceptually, the house is a derivative of this notion of being
connected, yet being detached and spatially evolves to accommodate
both public and private spaces. Originating from the entertainment
lounge in the basement as the soul of the project from where the
units are planned, each space is conceived with a strong vocabulary
of spatial design, lighting, scale proportion and finishes with respect
to site climate and surroundings. The ground floor has a living room,
kitchen, puja room and bedroom for the parents. The guest bedroom
rests in the heart of the garden in order to optimise the landscape
views. The first and second floors accommodate the remaining living
spaces for the brothers and their children, using the participatory
landscape spaces to unite the house for activities of recreation and
relaxation. Spaces are thoughtfully designed to capture outside
views, bring sufficient air and daylight whilst ensuring privacy. The
terraces and skylight balance the connect between the landscape
outside and the skies above.
A minimal palette of material, colour and texture is developed in
line with overlying design intent, using earthy shades that are offset
by graphics in the form of wall paintings, murals and artefacts that
