Installation
Thank you for purchasing the Axcient data protection solution. This document describes
how to install an Axcient appliance at your site. Installation requires two steps:
1. Install the Axcient appliance.
2. Register the Axcient appliance.
NOTES
If you have any problems during installation, contact Axcient technical support at
1-800-715-2339 (option 2). Support is available Monday-Friday, 6:00am-6:00pm
Pacific time.
This guide applies to G8, G7, and G6 model Axcient appliances. The model type is
specified in the first two letters of the appliance serial number:
The serial number is on a tag pasted to the appliance. The serial number also appears
in the “Version Information” panel on the Unified Management Console (UMC)
dashboard.
All Axcient product documentation is available at the following web address:
http://www.axcient.com/enduser-documentation
Installation Prerequisites
The following items are required prior to installation:
1. The Axcient appliance comes with default network settings (Table 1). It updates the
defaults with local values during registration, but you need to enter a new static IP
address for the appliance (and possibly other local values). Determine the correct
values for your network and enter them in the “Correct (Local) Value” column.
Check with your network administrator if you are not sure of the correct values.
NOTE
If you use a web proxy server, see the “Configure Web Proxy” section in the
“System Management” chapter of the Axcient UMC User Guide for instructions on
how to configure the Axcient appliance for a web proxy server.
CAUTION
To safely operate an Axcient appliance, it must comply with the safety
recommendations for power, temperature, access, and other environmental factors. See
the Safety and Regulatory Compliance Information and Important Safety Information
documents (included in the box) for information about your Axcient appliance model.
3. Connect the power cord to the power connector in the appliance rear (Figure 1), and
then plug the cord into a power socket. The appliance attempts to register
immediately after powering on the first time, so make sure the Ethernet cable is
connected before plugging in the power cord.
4. The appliance should power on automatically when the power cord is plugged in
during the previous step. If it does not, manually power on the appliance. The power
switch is located on the appliance front (Figure 2).
3. Connect the power cord to the power connector on the back of the appliance
(Figure 3), and then plug the cord into a power socket. The appliance attempts to
register immediately after powering on the first time, so make sure the Ethernet
cable is connected before plugging in the power cord.
4. The appliance should power on automatically when the power cord is plugged in
during the previous step. If it does not, manually power on the appliance. The power
switch is located on the front (Figure 4). (The switch is green when the power is on.
It is amber when the unit is powered but shut down. The fan remains on even when
the light is amber.)
3. Connect the power cord to the power connector on the back of the appliance, and
then plug the cord into a power socket. The appliance attempts to register
immediately after powering on the first time, so make sure the Ethernet cable is
connected before plugging in the power cord.
4. The appliance should power on automatically when the power cord is plugged in
during the previous step. If it does not, manually power on the appliance. The power
switch is located on the front (Figure 6). (The switch is green when the power is on.
It is amber when the unit has power but is shut down. The fan remains on even when
the light is amber.)
Automatic Registration
NOTE
The firmware on the Axcient appliance must be release 4.3 or later to use automatic
registration. If it is an earlier version, see “Manual Registration” on page 22.
b. Check the Connection column for that line. The connect field icon is red for
an appliance that has not yet registered. Registration typically takes less than 15
minutes after powering on the appliance. Wait until the icon turns green .
c. Go to the Actions column (far right) and select Login from the pull-down list.
NOTES
The RMC dashboard displays just one entry if this is your only appliance.
If the connection icon never turns green, automatic registration cannot proceed. In
this case follow the instructions in “Manual Registration” on page 22.
4. A new tab appears with the Unified Management Console (UMC) login screen for
that appliance (Figure 9). Enter the following user name and password and then
click the login button. (The password is case sensitive, but the user name is not.)
This logs you in as the default admin user.
Username: admin
Password: Welcome1
5. An end user agreement appears (Figure 10). Read the agreement and then click the
Agree button.
6. The Network Settings screen appears with predetermined values for IP address,
subnet mask, default gateway, domain, work group, primary DNS server, host name
secondary DNS server, and tertiary DNS server (Figure 11). Change the IP address
and any other fields that are incorrect to the correct values for your network (see
Table 1 on page 6). After making all changes, click the next button.
The following message (Figure 13) indicates the RMC connected successfully
to the appliance at the new IP address but could not complete registration for
some other reason. Click the OK button and go to step 8.
The following message (Figure 14) indicates the RMC could not connect to the
appliance at the new IP address. If you see this message, contact Axcient
technical support for help in resolving the problem.
8. The UMC login screen reappears with a message about the address change
(Figure 15). Re-enter the user name and password, and then click the login button.
NOTE
A configuration script running in the background must complete before logging into
the UMC. If it has not completed, you will be redirected back to the Network
Settings screen in step 6. To prevent this, wait one minute before logging into the
UMC.
NOTE
To set up your Axcient protection solution, see the Axcient UMC User Guide. To
quickly back up some data, see the Axcient Quick Start Guide. Axcient product
documentation is available at the following web address:
http://www.axcient.com/enduser-documentation
If registration was unsuccessful, the dashboard appears with a message near the
bottom indicating the Axcient appliance is not registered (Figure 17). At this
point you can either log out of the UMC or begin setting up your Axcient data
protection solution. However, an offsite backup cannot be performed until the
Axcient appliance is registered. When the RMC Available indicator near the
bottom of the dashboard is green, click the Register Now link to display the
Network Settings screen, and register the appliance as described in “Manual
Registration” on page 22. (If the indicator is red, registration is not possible,
because the Axcient appliance cannot connect to the RMC currently.)
Manual Registration
To manually configure and register the Axcient appliance, do the following:
1. To access the appliance from your workstation, change the IP address of your
workstation (if necessary) to match the network segment of the appliance. The
appliance default address is 192.168.100.1. Change the workstation to any available
address on that segment, such as 192.168.100.2.
NOTES
How to change the IP address varies by operating system. See your operating
system documentation for instructions. For Vista, Windows, and Mac systems,
open the help, search for “Configure TCP/IP settings,” and follow the instructions.
For most Linux or other UNIX systems, enter “man ifconfig” and follow the
instructions. For example, the IP address is changed in the Windows XP screen
displayed in Figure 18.
The IP address is reset back to its original setting in step 7 on page 24.
4. An end user agreement appears (Figure 20). Read the agreement and then click the
Agree button.
5. The Network Settings screen appears with default settings for IP address, subnet
mask, default gateway, domain, work group, primary DNS server, host name
secondary DNS server, and tertiary DNS server (Figure 21). (The MAC address and
serial number, which are set at the factory and cannot be changed, are also
displayed.) Change the default settings to the correct values for your network (see
Table 1 on page 6). After making all changes, click the next button.
6. After some processing a message appears about the address change and redirection
(Figure 22). Click the OK button.
7. Reset your workstation back to its original IP address (see step 1 on page 22) so it
can see the Axcient appliance at its new network address.
8. Enter the new appliance IP address into a browser. The UMC login screen reappears
with a message about the address change (Figure 23). Re-enter the user name and
password, and then click the login button.
9. The Network Settings screen (Figure 21) reappears with the new settings. Verify (or
correct) the settings and then click the next button.
10. The RMC Registration screen appears (Figure 24). Click the finish button. This
starts the registration process, which can take a few minutes. A status box appears
during this process.
NOTE
If any of the network settings were incorrect and not fixed in step 9, click the
network button. This takes you back to the Network Settings screen where you can
update the network settings.
11. A message box appears when the registration process completes. Do one of the
following:
If a registration succeeded message appears (Figure 25), click the OK button
and proceed to the next step.
If a registration deferred message appears (Figure 26), click the OK button and
skip to step 13.
12. The UMC user dashboard appears (Figure 27). At this point you can either log out of
the UMC or begin setting up your Axcient data protection solution.
NOTE
To set up your Axcient protection solution, see the Axcient UMC User Guide. To
quickly back up some data, see the Axcient Quick Start Guide. Axcient product
documentation is available at the following web address:
http://www.axcient.com/enduser-documentation
13. The UMC user dashboard appears with a message near the bottom indicating the
Axcient appliance is not registered (Figure 28). At this point you can either log out
of the UMC or begin setting up your Axcient data protection solution. However, an
offsite backup cannot be performed until the Axcient appliance is registered. When
the RMC Available indicator near the bottom of the dashboard is green, click the
Register Now link to display the Network Settings screen (Figure 21 on page 24),
and register the appliance as described in this section. (If the indicator is red,
registration is not possible, because the Axcient appliance cannot connect to the
RMC currently.)
Registration can fail for a variety of reasons. Table 2 describes possible reasons (and
corrective actions) for registration failing.
