CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presented the introduction, background of the

study, statement of the problem, assumptions, significance of the

study, scope and limitation of the study and the definition of terms.

Introduction

English language has been very dynamic to the lives of every

person in this world, specifically to every Filipinos. Thus, the

Philippines is recognized globally as one of the largest English-

speaking nations with majority of its population having at least some

degree of fluency in the language (www.britishcouncil.ph, 2015). Being

proficient in the said language had made the country’s economy

increased. For that reason, Filipinos cannot deny the importance of

being fluent in English language in their everyday lives.

Undeniably, the universal language of the world is the English

language. That is why it is important for every individual to be

enhanced and improved when it comes to speaking the said language.

In that case, every school institution should intervene in order to

develop the fluency of every student.

The implementation of English Only Policy (EOP) as the

intervention and remediation in Bestlink College of the Philippines for

the students’ ineloquence in English language is very helpful to

everyone. Moreover, the significance of this study is it will practice the

students to master their communication skills in the said language. The

school itself will benefit because the BCP students, especially the

Grade 12 ABM students will not only excel academically but also they

will be globally competitive.

Nowadays, students are neglecting the importance of being

fluent in English language. Therefore, the researchers chose this topic

to give awareness not only to the students but also to the school

administration, parents and to the society of how beneficial the (EOP)

can be to everyone and to the country.

The purpose of this study is to help the students to be globally

competitive by enhancing their fluency in English language. Through

the objective of this study students will develop to be proficient in

English especially when they are already in the business world where

Background of the study

Most subjects in Philippines’ schools are using English

language as the medium of communication. Despite of this fact,

students are still not fluent to the said language. Students tend to

please the teachers to understand their inability to express their

answers in English. That’s why there are times that they having a hard

time to cope up on their lessons and discussions. They cannot excel

academically because their ineloquence of speaking English language

lessen their capability to be academically competitive. The vocabulary,

pronunciation, and communication skills of the students in English

affect their grades. The lack of opportunities in school to improve and

enhance the students’ level of fluency is another factor. For these

reasons, the researchers proposed the English Only Policy as the

intervention and remediation in Bestlink College of the Philippines.

Statement of the Problem

The general objective of this study is to improve the level of English

fluency of Grade 12 ABM students in Bestlink College of the

Philippines. Specifically, the researchers sought to find answers to the

following sub problems:

PROBLEMS:

1. Ineloquence of the students in English language.

2. Unfamiliarity of terms in English.

3. Inability to answer questions in English fluently.

4. Struggle in understanding the lessons in those subjects that

uses English language as a medium of instruction.

5. Negligence of the importance of English language.

ACTION PLANS:

1. English only policy as a remediation in the school.

2. Requesting to have a daily post of unfamiliar words in BCP

group page or posting it in the school’s announcement board.

3. Proposing to the English teachers to let the students answer

their questions using only English language not “Taglish” or

Filipino.

4. Suggesting teachers who uses English language as a medium

of instruction to practice their students by giving more examples

of the lesson that are easier to understand.

5. Coordination with English club to conduct various activities,

seminars, etc. that will show to everyone how important English

language is.

Assumptions

The study is based on the following assumptions:

1. The implementation of English only policy will improve the level

of English fluency of the students.

2. The students’ English vocabulary will enhance and they will no

longer have a hard time understanding a new English word.

3. Students will become fluent in reciting and answering questions

using English language.

4. The grades of the students will increase and their struggle in

understanding the discussions will lessen.

5. The whole school, teachers and most importantly the students

will be aware of how significant English language to their lives

and to the country.

Scope and Limitations

This study aims to improve the level of English fluency of the

Grade 12 ABM students such as: Vocabulary, Fluency, Pronunciation,

Communication in relation to the English only policy as the proposed

intervention and remediation. Also, this study aims to determine if

implementing English only policy is effective in enhancing the level of

English fluency of Grade 12 ABM students. This study was conducted

in Bestlink College of the Philippines S.Y. 2019-2020

Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to the following groups of persons:

The result of this study will help the students to be fluent in

speaking English language. They will not only be academically
competitive but also globally competitive because they are going to be
fluent in speaking the universal language.

Teachers.

“Indoor plants particularly in classrooms carry a host of benefits, bringing

oxygen to the environment, boosting air quality, and enhancing everything
from mood”,( Knutson,J., 2014)

Plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. In each classroom,

more students are taking more carbon dioxide produces but when indoor
plants are design to a classroom, it can lessen the carbon dioxide and can
also lessen the heat inside the classroom.

“Better academic performance, attentional gains, fewer absences

Plants can lessen air pollution that can affect the health of people like
students or workers who are working in that environment.

“The results from this study suggest that an improvement in health and a
reduction in symptoms of discomfort may be obtained after introduction of
foliage of plants into the office environment”, (Fjelt T. & et al., 2014).

Plants can improve the health of people by collecting the carbon

dioxide and air pollution that can harm the health of students or workers.

According to Jenkin (2016).” School design doesn’t just help project the
environment, it also uses nature to improve children’s behavior”.

If the school is a nature centered, then it has a beautiful environment.

It does not only portrays beautification but it is also used to improve the
academic performance and behavior of a student.

According to Jenkin (2016). ‘’ Children learn letter when the outdoors comes

Stress Reducing effects of Indoor plants in a classroom setting

Laura Tennant

According to Tennant (2017), “Natural settings and access to plants appear

to have significant effects on people”.

Designing a classroom of indoor plants improves a good green

ambiance for the sight of students. These designs are helpful for the students
in their way of thinking. Natural settings like adding some green leafy plants
inside classroom are example of these.

“Studies have shown that views of plants reduce stress, anger, and feelings

In the classroom having these characteristics can impact reasoning,

students population, it might be a huge hindrance for the country’s hope of
success.

According to Tennant (2017), “Access to plants will increase employees

creativity and reduce stress”.

Not only to employees but also for the students who are the target of
this study. Students creativity are shown mostly in classroom especially when
