Course Information

Examines the internet as infrastructure, platform, medium and

interface. Topics include the history of the internet, the
development of internet technologies and media genres, the
creation of internet media for audiences, alternative modes of use
of the internet, and the political and social implications of the
internet.

Course Overview and

Approach/Framework

This course is about the internet and its uses. Fundamental to

that study is the actual practiced use of the internet, both in the
online class and out of class. Primarily the course is about you
and what you choose to do with it. This syllabus is the framework
for your success, but your exploration and research should go
beyond it, both in the online class and outside of it. You should
integrate your learning for other classes with this class and
develop your understanding of the internet to its fullest.

This course does not cover social media, that is CS371.

The content of this course, while topical, is envisaged as an

interconnected set of knowledges as represented by the television
show from the 80’s called Connections which can be found on
youtube [https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=91XWKv5UuCM]. None of the ideas in this course are
independent, they are all dependent and they all rely on concepts
from the rest of your university and communication studies
degree. The goal as such is not to learn everything at once, but
to allow the knowledge that you are reading and discussing to
come together in terms of your own life and career.
Course goals and Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the way the internet operates, its

technologies, and its uses;
2. Understand elements of the way the internet
interoperates with our lives;
3. Understand the social and cultural phenomena
surrounding the internet;
4. Develop and implement a project related to the
internet

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Describe the way the internet works;
Describe strategies for using the internet and its technologies;
Analyze internet based technologies;
Orchestrate successful projects surrounding internet technologies.

Student Evaluation

Student evaluation in this course is done with Specifications

University and Course Policies

Academic Integrity/Misconduct (cheating): Laurier is committed
to a culture of integrity within and beyond the classroom. This
culture values trustworthiness (i.e., honesty, integrity, reliability),
fairness, caring, respect, responsibility and citizenship. Together,
we have a shared responsibility to uphold this culture in our
academic and nonacademic behaviour. The University has a
defined policy with respect to academic misconduct. You are
responsible for familiarizing yourself with this policy and the
penalty guidelines, and are cautioned that in addition to failure in
a course, a student may be suspended or expelled from the
University for academic misconduct and the offence may appear
on their transcript. If you have read and understood the syllabus
to this point, send the professor an image of a Ocelot kitten via
email for one point of extra credit. The relevant policy can be
found at Laurier's academic integrity website along with resources
to educate and support you in upholding a culture of integrity.
Ignorance of Laurier's academic misconduct policy is not a
defense. <see: www.wlu.ca/academicintegrity >

Special Needs: Students with disabilities or special needs are

advised to contact Laurier's Accessible Learning Centre for
information regarding its services and resources. Students are
encouraged to review the Academic Calendar <see:
http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=1365&p=5123 > for
information regarding all services available on campus.

Plagiarism: Wilfrid Laurier University uses software that can check

for plagiarism. If requested to do so by the instructor, students
may are required to submit their written work in electronic form
and have it checked for plagiarism. (Approved by Senate May 14,
2002)

Classroom Use of Electronic Devices: Electronic systems in the

classroom are to be used for learning purposes only.- see Policy
9.3 (Approved by Senate March 8, 2012)

http://www.wlu.ca/documents/50202/9.3_Electronic_Device_Policy.pdf

Late Assignment Policy: Late assignments are not accepted

without an excuse that is accepted at the university level. The
penalty as such would be that late assignments without an excuse
receives a 0.
Grades are final: Grades when assigned in this course are final.
There is no negotiation of grades as that can lead to unfairness.
However, if there is a clear mistake, it will be corrected, so please
do cross-check your grades. Any questions or discussion of
grades must happen in office hours.

Extra credit: Extra credit can be offered in this course but it must
be available to every course member and it must occur before the
last day of classes. Extra credit opportunities arise all the time;
they usually entail attending an event off campus that deals with
the topics of the course. To have an extra credit opportunity,
students should contact the professor with information about the
event and its relationship to the class, he will then offer it to the
class as extra credit.
