PRACTICAL REVISION- X

1. Describe a test to distinguish between each of the following pairs of compounds:

a) Carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide (Hint: test both substances with lime water and orange
dichromate solutions and compare)

b) Sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide (test both substances with orange dichromate solution and
lead acetate solution and compare)

c) Chlorine and nitrogen dioxide (test both substances with starch potassium iodide paper and red
litmus paper)

d) Chlorine and hydrogen chloride (test both substances with a glass rod dipped in ammonia solution
and starch KI paper)

e) Solid lead nitrate, solid zinc nitrate and solid copper nitrate. (Heat each of the substances and state
the differences)

f) Solutions of lead nitrate, zinc nitrate, calcium nitrate, copper nitrate, ferrous nitrate, and ferric
nitrate. ( Add NaOH / NH4OH to each of these solutions in drops and in excess and compare)

g) Solid lead carbonate, zinc carbonate and copper carbonate. (Heat each of these)

f) Solid lead carbonate and Solid lead nitrate (Heat each of these)

g) Solid zinc carbonate and Solid zinc nitrate (Heat each of these)

h) Solid copper carbonate and Solid copper nitrate (Heat each of these)

i) Sodium nitrate solution and sodium chloride solution (Add AgNO3 solution to each of these)

j) Potassium nitrate solution and potassium sulphate solution (Add BaCl2 / Ba (NO3)2solution to each of
these)

k) Magnesium chloride solution and magnesium sulphate solution. (Add BaCl2 / Ba (NO3)2solution to
each of these)

l) Dilute hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid and nitric acid. (Refer practical record)

m) Sodium chloride, potassium chloride and calcium chloride (Describe and perform flame test for each
of these. Each of these cations give different flame colors)

n) Aluminum and Magnesium (Test with concentrated solution of NaOH/KOH – Al being amphoteric will
liberate H2 while Mg will not. Should describe the test for H2)

2. Describe the reactions in which the following behave in a similar manner and the reactions in which
they behave differently.
Dilute hydrochloric acid and conc. hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride gas.

(Hint: treat all three substances with AgNO3 solution, Pb (NO3)2 solutions, glass rod dipped in ammonia
solution and MnO2 and then compare their observations.)

ANSWER:

 All three produce white ppt with silver nitrate solution or lead nitrate solution)
 Conc. HCl and hydrogen chloride gas ( both) will produce dense white fumes with a glass rod
dipped in ammonia solution but not dilute HCl
 Only conc. HCl will liberate greenish yellow chlorine gas when heated with MnO2

3. Give two tests to distinguish between MnO2 and CuO (Practical Record)

4. Substance X produces a colorless gas A, which fumes in moist air, when concentrated sulphuric acid is
added to it. This gas produces dense white fumes with a glass rod dipped in ammonia solution. Identify
the gas A and anion of the salt.

5. Substance Y produces reddish brown gas B, when it is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid. These
reddish fumes intensify when copper turnings are added to the hot solution. Identify the gas B and the
anion of the salt Y.

6. when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to a salt Z, a colourless, rotten egg smelling gas C , is liberated
which turns lead acetate paper to blue black. Identify the gas and the anion of the salt.

7. When dilute sulphuric acid is added to a salt, a colorless, suffocating gas is liberated which turns
orange potassium dichromate solution to green. The resulting solution formed is slightly turbid. Identify
the anion of the salt.

8. When a salt P is heated with NaOH solution/ KOH solution, a pungent colorless gas A is liberated
which turns moist red litmus solution to blue. Identify the gas A and the cation of the salt P.

9) Describe two tests to prove that a given solution has hydronium ions in it. ( Add a portion of the
solution to a carbonate salt/ add another portion of the solution to a sulphite salt)

10) Describe two tests to prove that a given solution has hydroxyl ions in it. (Add a portion of the
solution to an ammonium salt and heat/ add another portion to ferrous salt solution)
