Rowaa is learning to recite the Quran. The author observed Rowaa sounding out words while listening to a recitation on a tablet. Though Rowaa may not know all the words, she follows along and knows the rhythm. Rowaa prays regularly at An-Nur and is growing more confident in practicing her faith. The goal is for Rowaa to build skills in Arabic and recitation to feel a strong sense of belonging at An-Nur and potentially compete in future Quran competitions.

Rowaa, you are finding your voice! Being one of the
younger children at An-Nur often means you don’t need to speak for yourself as the other children tend to do it for you! But today when you sat with the Quran recite on Rosy’s tablet, I could clearly hearing you sounding out the words. Rowaa, I have seen you praying on a mat in hijab a lot at An-Nur, you see your parents pray 5x every- day! You are always keen for your turn and you know exactly what to do! Know you are beginning to learn to recite the Quran. You may not have all the words down yet but you followed along with the first and last words and you knew the rhythm of the verse and hummed along. I love that through this experience you are able to speak for yourself and soon I know that you will be speaking in all areas of your life. You are getting braver and trusting more everyday! Rowaa, you are growing as a Muslim. Our philoso- phy states that we “teach our children Arabic lan- guage to enable them to read, understand and therefore implement the words of Allah (Quran)” You have made a start with this aspiration Rowaa. Your personal learning goal is a sense of belonging at An-Nur, participating in familiar recitation and prayer allows you to build a strong sense of belong- ing here. I love that you are finding your voice and I will be encouraging you to speak up as often as pos- sible in English & Arabic to continue to grow your confidence. Before you know it you will be compet- ing in the annual Quran completion!
Masha Allah Rowaa!
