Medicare annual enrollment begins Nov. 15

Do you need help understanding the changes to the
Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage Plans?
Join us at one of the upcoming Medicare presenta-
tion where Jill Drury, senior services coordinator from
the Newaygo County Commission on Aging will provide
information about the 2011 Medicare choices available to
Newaygo County beneficiaries. Drury is the site coordina-
tor Newaygo County’s Medicare-Medicaid Assistance Pro-
gram. She has 13 years of experience working with Medi-
care issues and specializes in working with Medicare Part
D and Medicare Advantage enrollment for beneficiaries.
Drury will be available:
n 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, at the Senior Meal Site
at Merrill Township Hall in Bitely,
n 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Senior Meal
Site at St. Bart’s Church in Newaygo
n 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the Senior Cen-
ter in White Cloud
n noon on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Senior Meal Site at
NCCS in Fremont.
Lunch will be available at all locations, suggested do-
nation for lunch is $2 for those 60 and older, $4 fee for
guests under 60. RSVP must be made for lunch by calling
689-2100. When making lunch reservations, please verify
serving time for lunch as it varies from site to site.
There will be some significant changes in 2011 and all
beneficiaries are encouraged to review their current plans
to determine what best meets their needs. It is also sug-
gested that beneficiaries contact their health care provid-
ers to ensure that the provider will accept their Medicare
plan for 2011. For more information about 2011 plans con-
tact the Medicare-Medicaid Assistance Program by calling

are nestled into their hunting blinds

warm, the women will be heading
to Lakeview Community Wellness
Center for a day of fun, free services,
and bags of sample products to take
home.
From noon to 4 p.m. on Nov. 15,
the LCWC will be catering toward
area women. As soon as the ladies
enter the door, they will be given a
goody bag full of coupons, product
samples, and brochures from busi-
nesses in Lakeview and surrounding
towns.
From there the women can enjoy
free daycare, full use of the facility
(including the hot tub and pool), and
a roomful of vendors who specialize
in women and their needs.
“It’s our way of giving back to
the women in the community,” said
Jonna Skinner, director of marketing
and personal trainer at the Lakeview
Community Wellness Center. “It’s a
time for them just to kick back, re-
lax, and enjoy themselves for a few
hours. They get a chance to take
a break from their busy schedules
and have some fun with the other
ladies.”
Some of that fun includes the op-
portunity to receive a chair massage,
facials from Donna at Nahama In-
dustries, manicures/pedicures from
The Bare Foot & Nail Spa, sample
products from Scentsy by Robin Al-

have bowlers of all abilities and ages
rolling some great scores.

Zellie’s Opry House
On Saturday, Nov. 20, Zellie’s
brings you two bands for the price of
one. Zellie’s Opry House will bring
two bands to their concert stage on
Saturday, Nov. 20, for the regular ad-
mission price of only $5. The event,
“Hot Bands & Bluegrass Jam” is be-
ing held in conjunction with the West
Michigan Bluegrass Music Associa-
tion (WMBMA), with a portion of the
proceeds going to WMBMA.
Taking the stage at 7:00 p.m. will
be a regional favorite “Free Wheelin’”
with Marc Conley, Scott “Buck” Rob-
inson and the Seabolt brothers, Dan
and Dave. “Free Wheelin’” packs a
powerful bluegrass punch with tal-
ented instrumentalists and vocalists.
In addition, “Bluegrass Echoes” will
also perform.
Open jamming will be available
both evenings on the lower level of
Zellie’s Opry House. Hot pickers and
slow jammers are welcome. A “slow
jam” room will be available for those
just beginning or if you haven’t dust-
ed the strings in a while. In addition,
after the evenings’ performances, the
main stage will open up for jammers
to strut their stuff.
The doors open at 6 p.m., with the
stage show beginning at 7 p.m. No
advance ticket sales for either show,
but room for all. Arrive early, get your
popcorn, grab a seat and hang on for

“Center” always came first and fore-
most. There have been many changes
in leadership but Dawmy has always
been there with the changes as se-
niors come and go. The Senior Center
has been open for senior noon lunch-
es, bingo, potluck, and music (one of
Dawny’s favorite things). When Get-
tin Picky opened in the old church
she was always there; Music in the
park you could see Dawny there.
When a parade was called for you
could march by and you would see
Dawny waving to
the marchers ei-
ther by the park or
on Main Street. She
was there. There
have been many
times where some-
one couldn’t come
up with a donation
for a meal or raffle
ticket. Dawny al- KNIFFEN

come thru for them and not being a
rich person she always was there and
would give you the shirt off her back
if she thought you needed it. She will
be greatly missed at the Senior Cen-
ter as she retires, but thtere is no on
e more deserving. She will still be at

taking life easy and enjoying life. Its
hard for the rest of us to try to fill her
shoes.
It sure is going to take more than
one of us to do her job. So Dawny, sit
back, put your feet up and enjoy your
retirement.
David Stedman
David Stedman, 63, of Howard City,
passed away peacefully with his family at his
side after a three-and-a-half year battle with
cancer.
He was born Dec.
25, 1946, in Grand Rap-
ids, the son of Leon and
Esther (Johnson) Sted-
man. During his work-
ing years he worked in
the Tool and Die busi-
ness for more than 25,
he also owned and oper-

he served his country in the U.S. Army. In
2001, he married Carol Johnston, who sur-
vives.
Also surviving are his daughters Bren-
da (Todd) Galloway of Rockford, Michele
(Steve) LaFontsee of Morley, Lisa and Jodi
Perkins, both of Grand Rapids, and Jenni-
fer (Darren) Lakey of California; five grand-
children, Kevin, Shelby, Tyler, Sarah and
Dylan; two sisters, Louise Kok of Fremont
and Joann (Jerry) Smith of Hudsonville;
brother, Leon Bud (Kathi) Stedman of Jeni-
son; and several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his parents.
The family will greet friends from noon
to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the How-
ard City VFW Post. Memorial contributions
to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Make a
wish foundation. Arrangements were en-
trusted to the Heckman Funeral Home.

These are words we often hear when we go to the doctor or Urgent Care with cold symptoms, flu, vomiting,

No school for Students
on Monday, November 15
Jennifer Arnold, the music teacher at Edgerton Upper Elementary
is an artist-in-residence teacher for the Grand Rapids Symphony.
“An Artist-In-Residence (AIR) teacher is the music teacher (me, for
Sand Lake) or contact teacher for a school who has won a Partnership
Grant with the Grand Rapids Symphony. The program extends over
two years. The Grand Rapids Symphony sets up special programs with
the school sending the professional musical ensembles into the school
as well as performances and field trips for each grade level. Sand Lake is
in an AIR partnership (MacNaughton as well) for the next two years,”
explained Jennifer, who said our elementary schools have been a part
of the Artist-In-Residence Partnership for many years.
The special programs of the GR
Symphony includes: an ensemble playing
for all the students; kindergarten through
second grade will go to the Lollipops concerts;
third grade will attend a performance by
the Symphony’s percussionist, Bill Vits at
Celebration Cinema; fourth graders will
have an Instrument Discovery group right
at school where they’ll be able to play the
instruments; and, the fifth graders will take
a trip to DeVos Hall to attend a concert by
the GR Symphony.
“It is a joy to be part of the AIR Partnership with the Grand Rapids
Symphony. To have that caliber of musicianship in our schools and
classroom really has a strong and positive impact on our students. It’s
a program that is supported by donor and corporate sponsorship. The
Partnership grant costs the Symphony over $8000 for each school each
year. Letters to the donors and corporations explaining the impact this
program has on the students could help keep the funding flowing.

Jennifer is also teaching music at the middle school. Her picture
is on the front of the symphony brochure this month and her quote
appears in the brochure, “I tell students: hearing a symphony live is

you become part of the music as 80 vibrations pass through you!”

The 13th annual Tri County Turkey Trot was held under the lights of
the high school track on Wednesday, October 27. It was a terrific success.
The very high winds made for an eventful night, but the temperatures
were warm enough to allow the participants and spectators to really
enjoy the special night. There were more runners this year than any
year in the past. More than 265 people participated.
The Tri County Area Schools elementary physical education staff
again coordinated the
event, yet it could not take
place without the support
of volunteers that included
community members,
staff, and administration.
Helping to make the night
even more special was the
fact that the concession
stand was open for
business thanks to the
MacNaughton Parents’
Club. The organizers
want to give a big thank
you to all who attended
one of Tri County’s very
special annual events. It
is interesting to note that
the kindergarten runners
from the first Turkey Trot

Each elementary grade level had a race for the boys and a race
for the girls. The top three finishers won prizes, and each elementary
student received a small goodie bag. Middle school, high school, and
adults also had races. Everyone who participated received an apple and
raffle ticket. Applebee’s gift certificates and Griffins hockey tickets were
among the raffle prizes.
Turkeys, of course, were the highlight of the night, as the winners
of each race, as well as three lucky raffle ticket winners, took home
a turkey. Thank you, Northern Trails, for once again providing the
turkeys.

Sandra Underwood is student teaching in Jan Dewey’s second
grade classroom. She is attending Ferris State
University. “While growing up I noticed I had
a lot of patience and empathy for others. I soon
realized I loved to advocate for others and
help them succeed. I believe education is the
only field that could ever satisfy what I want
to accomplish with my life,” Sandra said.
Sandra lives with her husband, Matthew, in
Big Rapids. She loves to run, work out, read,
cook, and hunt. Sandra is the president of a
student organization at Ferris State University
that she helped create called, Disability
Awareness and Education. She is also involved
in many other organizations such as Strider’s
Running Club, Great Start Parent Coalition,
Association of Future Educators, to name a few.

for a pole barn permit.
Fire Department:
Deputy Chief Ed duChemin, monthly report for September
8 fire, 7 medical, 1 motor vehicle accident, 1 water rescue,
a total of 17 runs. We have had 4 members finish FFII,
Billy Westgate, David Middaugh, David Norton, and Tyler
DeVuono. Congratulations to all of them.
FD sign is up and finished. Pole and flag will be finished
next week. And the letters will be put on the building also
next week.
Library:
Director Ashley Hawley, the Library is looking to fill the
position of the Children’s Director if anyone is interested
in the position please notify Ashley at the library. We are
having Story Time on Saturday, October 23, 2010 from
10:am to 11:am. And also were having Pumpkin Painting
on October 20, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friends
of the Library are going to be selling Holiday Reith’s for $
15.00. Discussion on replacing the library entrance doors.

The Religious Historical Society had a meeting today to
discuss the Church on the corner of Division and Croton
Hardy Dr. The church was built in 1871 and is a very
important part of Croton Township’s history. And is in need
of repair soon if we want to preserve its history.
Future Projects
Consumers Energy and Big Prairie are working together to
build a bike path that will connect Croton Township and Big
Prairie . We would like to have the bike path included on the
causeway when it gets replaced in the near future, possibly
including a fishing pier.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm has proclaimed October as

“Michigan Car-Deer Crash Safety Awareness Month.”
In Michigan in 2009 there were 61,486 reported car-deer crashes with 10 motorists killed and 1,648
injured. About 80 percent of all car-deer crashes take place on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn.
(Of the reported car-deer accidents Kent County is number one and Montcalm County is number five in
the state’s highest accident rate).
What can you do?
• Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
• Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision.
• Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
• Don’t swerve!
• Brake firmly
• Hold on to the steering wheel.
• Stay in your lane.
• Bring you vehicle to a controlled stop.
