Bird lovers from around the state have been visiting the Perry backyard to see
Tinkerbell.
The Perry backyard is full
of bird feeders, and birds of
all types.
“My wife is nuts about
them,” Michael Perry said.
“I’m just getting into it.”
“There are just an abun-
dance of birds here, and
gorgeous birds, not just your
run-of-the-mill birds,” Chris
said, adding that she and
her husband have owned the
property for about six years
and moved there fulltime
from Grand Rapids about
two years ago.
Chris has had the time of
her life watching Tinkerbell.
“She’s not afraid of any
of these other birds — or
dogs or people,” she said.
“Sometimes there would be
three or four other hum-
mingbirds on the feeder.
Tinkerbell would sit in a
tree, then fly over and knock
them on the ground and
fight them. She’s a ferocious
little thing, and she wasn’t
afraid to let them know that
this is her feeder.
“If I’m out here by
myself, she’ll buzz me,” Chris
said. “She won’t come that
close to anyone else.”
With winter loom-
ing, Chris indicated that
she’s been concerned that
Tinkerbell is still in the area.
“I’d like to get on a
plane and take her as far as
I could,” she said. “On the
really cold nights we’ve had,
I was afraid Michael would
come to the feeder one
morning and find her dead.”
Chartier said it wasn’t
unusual for hummingbirds
to stay into the north until
the cold winds start blow-
ing. He remembered hearing
of a hummingbird that was
last seen in Zanesville, Ohio
on Dec. 27, when it was 16
degrees. It came back the
next summer.
“Hummingbirds can fly
100 to 200 miles a day,”
Chartier said. “We don’t
know exactly where they go
— there are just a lot of mys-
teries about these things and
their ability to survive.”
The birds cover great
distances. He said several
years ago one was banded in
Talahassee Fla. in January
and then captured in
Anchorage, Alaska that June.
Chartier is co-editor of “A
Birder’s Guide to Michigan”
and has been a contributing
author for various projects
with National Geographic,
including “Complete Birds of
North America,” “Complete
Birds of the World,” and
“Handheld Birds.”
In 2000, Chartier, who
lives in Inkster, received
his permit from the
Canadian government to
band hummingbirds and
in 2001 he received his
U.S. permit. That’s when
he started his Great Lakes
HummerNet research
project. Information on
the project is available at

been a member of Oakland
County Audubon since 1976.
To capture Tinkerbell,
Chartier placed a cage with a
remote control door in place
of the bird’s favorite feeder.
It was about a 20 minute
wait for Tinkerbell to take
the bait. Chartier said in all
he has banded 55 rufous
hummingbirds — 50 of them
went into the cage in the first
five minutes, four took about
an hour, and he waited
for three hours for one of
them. He added that there
have been some no-shows
— where by the time he
arrives at the home the bird
has moved on to another ter-
ritory.
He estimates that he
banded about 700 ruby
throats this summer.
The bands Chartier
uses are provided by the
bird banding lab at the U.S.
Geological Survey. He said
he submits reports on his
banding activity twice per
year, and that the banding
lab has a website where
anyone can look up the
numbers.
Chartier thought that
Tinkerbell handled the band-
ing experience well.
“It may take an hour for
her to come back to the feed-
er after we ruffle her feath-
ers, and they usually curse

until Chartier blew on her,
which sent her up in the
trees.
