THEME OVERVIEW

As an emerging country with the fourth largest population in the world,

Indonesia’s purchasing power has strengthened, leading to socioeconomic
changes that affect its healthcare system. Additionally, there is a surge of
healthcare utilization after the implementation of a new national insurance
scheme, particularly within emergency departments.[3]

Emergency medicine (EM) is a primary, or first-contact point of care for

patients requiring the use of the health care system.[4] It is an integrated
structure that incorporates the use of traditional specialties with modern
resuscitation skills which focus exclusively on managing acute illnesses and
injuries. With technological advancements, this specialty has widened its scope
to not only basic life support but also on the spot provisional management of
obstetric, pulmonary, hematologic, gastrointestinal, oncologic and other
emergencies. In fact, all the five most frequent causes of death in LMICs—
ischemic heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, and diarrheal diseases—can present as emergencies, can be
time sensitive, and show improved outcomes with quality emergency care.[2]

According to the World Health Organization, EM is a horizontally

integrated system of emergency care consisting of access to EM care; provision
of EM care in the community and during transportation of patients; and
provision of care at the receiving facility or hospital emergency department.[1]

The field of emergency medicine has gained a lot of impetus in the past
few years across the globe. Although a lot of advancement has occurred in this
field, still the state of emergency medicine varies drastically from developed to
developing countries. Understanding the basic principles and management that
emergency medicine entails will not only provide us with the ability to manage
them, but also instil in us involuntary responses to emergency situations. While
an ER team constitutes a variable number of doctors, nurses and technical staff,

3
one common thing is how they work together, making quick decisions in
seconds, making the seconds count and saving lives.
