Self-Reflective Essay
On 10th March, I attended a Metro Swing Dance event, which is a new show
performance at the Metro Swing Performing Arts Center. The Metro Swing Dance is a social
dance event that takes place on a weekly basis and appeals to the people interested in dancing
and performance art. The training offered at Metro Swing Dance focused on providing unique
dance lessons that helped people enrich their life experiences. The people taking part in the
event did not need to have any professional experience or a partner to dance. Most of the
lessons offered at the event were easy to master, allowing many people to become more
interested in the performing art and different types of dances. Upon entering the premises, I
noticed people dancing, drinking, and relaxing, which made me more interested in the event.
Performers were supposed to learn their preferred dance routine before proceeding
downstairs to dance. Threfore, I will describe the three-dance variation that I remember from
the encounter, including the swing style and the Lindy Hop dance that I learned while taking
The three-dance variation, the swing style, involves flipping, swinging, and throwing
one’s partner in an energetic manner. It is not a progressive dance since people perform it in a
single spot. However, it appeals to performers when the dance floor is crowded. The swing
entails a fast-paced dance routine where the dancers place their hands around their partners’
waists and shoulders, as it is the case with ballroom dancers. The dance entails a man taking
his left foot, swiping it behind his right leg, following is a triple step to the right, and then
repeating the movement with the left leg while taking a triple step to the left. It is then
followed by three rock steps to the right and three rock steps to the left. The woman then

takes a rock step back, then forth, then slide to the right three times and then back to the left
three times. The dance routine requires the woman to keep her left hand on the gentleman's
shoulder and the right hand holding the gentleman’s left hand around the waist. The dance
The social dance experience and the dance lesson helped me to learn the Lindy Hop
Dance. The dance mostly involved athletic and sharp movements. As opposed to dancing in
an upright posture, we were required to maintain an athletic stance while constantly moving
our legs. We used leg movements to draw long, horizontal lines while incorporating our
individual styles in the dance routine. In addition, the dance lesson was quite unique since it
also involved spontaneous body movements and kicks. The swing out was a defining
movement while performing the Lindy Hop Dance. During the swing out, a dancer would
pull the partner from an open spot to a close position while turning 180 degrees. The dancer
would then swing the other person to the initial starting position. Even though the lesson
included several acrobatic stances, most of them were considerably smooth and in sync with
the music. The style required individuals to rest their mind and follow the rhythm. Eventually,
the Lindy Hop Dance became favorite for many dancers who took more lesson to learn how
to dance better. The Lindy Hop Dance brought joy to most of the dancers, which is why it
was the most appealing dance routine for most visitors. Overall, the dance experience was
amazing, and I will continue attending the lessons to gain more understanding of different
dance routines.
