Redox Titration II: Analysis of Vitamin C
Introduction
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an antioxidant that is essential for human nutrition.
Vitamin C deficiency can lead to a disease called scurvy, which is characterized by
abnormalities in the bones and teeth. Many fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, but
cooking destroys the vitamin, so raw citrus fruits and their juices are the main source of
ascorbic acid for most people. One way to determine the amount of vitamin C in food is
to use a redox titration. The redox reaction is better than an acid-base titration. In this
activity redox titration was used, this method the vitamin concentration in the solution is
determined by titrating the unknown sample with potassium iodate in the presence of
potassium iodide. The iodate ion reduces to form iodine in the presence of iodide to form
iodine in which iodine will react to ascorbic acid. Indeed, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an

The redox reaction is better than an acid-base titration since there are additional acids in
a juice, but few of them interfere with the oxidation of ascorbic acid by iodine.

Conclusion
The purpose for this experimental procedure was to determine the concentration
of vitamin C in a solution by a redox reaction with potassium iodate in the presence of
potassium iodide. This procedure was done through two trials. After completing the
procedure, the results for percentage of the ascorbic acid for the first trial is 25.26% which
has relatively moderate concentration, this means that the solution in the first trial contains
moderate amount of ascorbic acid and thus is quite that beneficial for maintaining a good
nutrition. While for the second trial the calculated percentage through redox titration is
28.655% which is again moderate going to high and thus means moderate concentration
of ascorbic acid in the solution. This two information from the trials conducted is quite
near, from 25.26-28.655% and that proves its preciseness and accurateness proving that
the solution that was provided in the experiment contains a quarter of ascorbic acid, and
means that there is a moderate concentration of vitamin C in that solution.
