Course Outline in So-An 101

Title of the Course: Sociology-Anthropology 101 (So-An 101)

Course Description: This is an introductory course, which highlights the basic concepts and dynamic
processes of culture as well as the individual and society. This 3-unit course
will be divided into two: the first half will focus on Anthropology, while the
second on Sociology.

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
a. describe, compare, and contrast the different basic concepts related to Anthropology and
Sociology;
b. apply the anthropological and sociological perspectives in analyzing some human
phenomena as well as their implication to the culture of peace;
c. demonstrate/perform at least one cultural practice of any western Mindanao cultures; and
d. demonstrate deeper appreciation on the different cultures in the Philippines, specifically
western Mindanao.

Course Requirements:
Attendance Reports/Presentations
Assignments Seat-works/group-works/artworks
Quizzes - (objective, essay, etc.) Mid-term Exam
Oral participation Final Exam

Grading System:
Class Standing (CS) = Quizzes + Class-works/presentations + other considerations
Midterm Grade (MG) = [2/3 (CS) + Midterm Exam] /3
Second Quarter Grade (2ndQG) = CS of the second quarter period
Final Grade = (MG + 2ndQG + Final Exam Grade)/3

Class Policies/Methodology:
1. Attendance in class is mandatory. Tardiness is equivalent to ½ cut. The college regulation on
absences and tardiness will be strictly adhered to. The class beadle is expected to religiously
tabulate absences and tardiness. You will be marked late after the prayer and absent 15
minutes after. No one is allowed to leave the class after the prayer without permission. Please
refrain from always visiting the comfort room, do this before the class begins.

2. The grading system follows the standard Ateneo system. No make-up quiz or exercise will be
given. Make-up for major exam will be granted on a case-to-case basis only (medical reason).
However, it is the student’s responsibility to inform the teacher about his/her failure to take any
major exam as soon as possible (at least not more than a week). Otherwise, failure to take
any long test will merit an automatic grade of 0% for that particular test.

3. A check-up quiz/graded recitation on topics previously taken up in class will be given at the
beginning of each period. Each student, therefore, is expected to come to class prepared.

4. All medical certificates must be submitted first to the school infirmary for authentication.

For uniformity, use Intermediate Pad only. Information such as name, subject and section, date
and legends should be written on the upper left-hand corner.
