UNIT IV - Friction –Syllabus

Assignment Questions:
Problems on Horizontal and Inclined plane

1. For the blocks shown in Fig. 1 Find the value of pull ‘P’. The coefficient of friction
between blocks is 0.2 and the same between block and floor is 0.3.

Fig. 1
2. A body of mass 350 kg is pulled with a force of 450 N. It is tied on the top by a crane
cable as shown in Fig.2. If µ = 0.2, what will be the tension in the cable if the block
just start to move right?

3. A force of 200 N is required to just move a certain body up an inclined plane of angle
15°, the force being parallel to the plane. If the angle of inclination of the plane is
made 20°, the force required again parallel to the plane is found to be 230 N. Find the
weight of the body and the coefficient of friction.

4. What should be the value of θ in Fig.3 which will make the motion of 900 N block
down the plane to impend? Take the coefficient of friction for all contact surfaces as
1/3.

Fig. 3
5. What is the value of P in the system shown in Fig.4 to cause the motion to impend?
Assume the pulley is smooth and coefficient of friction between other contact surfaces
is 0.20.

6. Find the value of ‘P’ for the shown block in Fig.5. Take Angle of friction as 15 0.

Problems on Ladder friction:

7. A ladder of weight 1000 N and length 4m rests as shown in Fig.6. If a 750 N weight is
acting a distance of 3m from the bottom of ladder, it is at the point of sliding.
Determine the co-efficient of friction between ladder and the floor.

Fig. 6

8. A 7 m long ladder rests against the vertical wall as shown in Fig.7. If a man whose
weight is one half that of the ladder climbs it, at what distance along the ladder will he
be, when the ladder is about to slip?

9. A ladder 6 m long has a mass of 100 N and its center of gravity is 2.4 m from the
bottom. The ladder is placed against a vertical wall so that it makes an angle of 60°
with the ground. How far up the ladder can a 750 N man climb before the ladder is on
the verge of slipping? The angle of friction at all contact surfaces is 15°.

Problem on Wedge:

10. For the block and wedge shown in Fig. 8, determine the value of ‘P’ required to raise
the block.

Problem on Belt friction:

11. A pulley is driven by flat belt running at a speed of 600m/min. If µ = 0.3, between
belt and pulley and angle of lap is 1600 and tension in belt is 700 N, find power
transmitted by the belt.

12. A belt is running over a pulley of diameter 1 m at 300 rpm. The angle of contact is
1600 and coefficient of friction is 0.25. If the maximum tension in the belt is 1200 N,
determine the power transmitted by it.

Problems on screw Friction

13. The pitch of a single threaded screw jack is 6 mm and its mean diameter is 60 mm. If
μ is 0.1, determine the force required at the end of lever 250 mm long measure from
the axis of screw to a) raise a 65 kN load b) lower the same load
14. A screw jack has square threads of mean diameter of 10cm and pitch 1.25cm.
Determine the force that must be applied to the end of 50cm lever (i) to raise and (ii)
to lower a weight of 50KN. Is it self Locking? Find the efficiency of the jack. Assume
μ=0.2.
