GENERAL BIOLOGY – 1 & EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
Planet Earth: Episode 1 (From Pole to Pole)

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What important life lesson can we learn from the following in terms of how they deal with
challenging conditions:
a. Penguins
From the movie “Happy Feet”, penguins are introduced to be fluffy creatures who
are fond of dancing, especially with complex foot techniques. Despite the title of the
movie being “Happy”, these penguins are sturdy birds that withstand the heavy howling
of the winter storm. They migrate from one place to another. But if it were to think of,
how do they move the eggs laid during winter? The answer is, they keep them between
their feet. They journey through the ice while having their children kept under them for
protection and to incubate them. Not all that is labeled to be happy is real, yet the love
of these feathery friends for their child is truly admirable.

b. Polar Bears
Sacrifice. That’s the word that rings to my ears after watching how polar bears
survive the cold. They hibernate for five months, meaning no food no water for the
whole duration. Yet they didn’t just sleep all throughout the season, mother polar bears
were under a hard challenge. They lose for about 5 kilos from feeding their little ones.
And once spring comes, they have this urgency to find food, not for themselves but for
their children to eat.

c. Caribous
Due to the seasons, caribous are driven to venture and find land that springs with
plants to fill in their hungry stomachs. Yet as they moved from place to place, danger
awaits them from every step as carnivores are on the run to also suffice their hunger.
They represent courage – knowing that they are bound to face a life and death situation,
they still push through to survive.

d. Seals

Seals face grave danger in the waters as the Great White Shark motions its hunt. If
the land is lurking with variety of flesh-eating mammals, in the ocean, this huge fish
swims to live. They commence in a battle of strength against agility, and the one who
makes a single mistake may be eaten or have nothing to eat at all. This shows the
desperation to live and conquering fear of those that we think that are too much for our
own abilities.

e. Birds of Paradise
2. What important adaptations do the following organisms posses or perform in order for them
to survive in their environment?
a. Shrubs (pines) in the boreal forests

b. Animals (deer & leopard) during winter

c. Plants and Trees during changes in seasons

d. White Sharks

e. Elephants

f. Hunting Dogs

3. In what many ways does the Sun affect environments (biotic and abiotic factors) in the
Earth? Give an elaboration using the following terms:
a. Migration c. Ecosystem Diversity
b. Change in plants’ leaf color d. Weather Formation

There are endless of ways that the Sun affects our environment Knowing that the Sun
is the primary source of energy for the world and of humans also,
4. Comment on the phrase “There is beauty in diversity.”

5. How is the life-saving power of water demonstrated in Kalahari and Okavango swamp?
Give examples of animals reaching for water in those ecosystems and how they are
affected.

6. What does Earth’s design reveal about our Creator?
