Chapter 1
Introduction
In this research, what you are about to see are the issues around the world that is
happening to our home the Earth. Including the pollutions happening around the world.
These are the issues around the world that must be solved so we can live longer and our
Earth can live longer. Earth is our home, our only home that can hold our lives. If we lose
Earth, our lives will end.
Pollution is common now a days. Water pollution, Air pollution and Land pollution.
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause
adverse change. Water pollution is the contamination of waterbodies, usually as a
result of human activities. Water bodies include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers
and groundwater. Water pollution results when contaminants are introduced into the
natural environment. Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Car
emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as
particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air pollutionin cities. When ozone forms air
pollution, it's also called smog. Some air pollutants are poisonous. . Land pollution is the
deterioration (destruction) of the earth's land surfaces, often directly or indirectly as a
result of man's activities and their misuse of land resources. Deforestation, clearance,
clearcutting or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land which is then
converted to a non-forest use. Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms,
ranches, or urban use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests.
A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a
slope. Landslides are a type of "mass wasting," which denotes any down-slope movement
of soil and rock under the direct influence of gravity. Flooding is a temporary overflow of
water onto land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common natural disaster in the
United States. Floods may: Result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges, and
overflows of dams and other water systems. Develop slowly or quickly – Flash floods can
come with no warning. Illegal logging is the harvest, transportation, purchase or sale
of timber in violation of laws. The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including
using corrupt means to gain access to forests; extraction without permission, or from a
protected area; the cutting down of protected species; or the extraction of timber in excess
of agreed limits.

Deforestation
Deforestation, clearance, clearcutting or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees
from land which is then converted to a non-forest use.Deforestation can involve conversion
of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use. The most concentrateddeforestation occurs
in tropical rainforests. The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change,
desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people. Human-driven and natural loss
of trees—deforestation—affects wildlife, ecosystems, weather patterns, and
even the climate. Climate 101: Deforestation. Forests cover about 30 percent
of the planet's land mass, but humans are cutting them down, clearing these essential
habitats on a massive scale. A major cause of deforestation is agriculture plantations. An
increasing supply-demand for products such as palm oil and soybeans are driving
producers to clear forests at an unnerving rate. Farmers often clear the land for cattle by
using slash and burn techniques (cutting down trees and burning them).
Deforestation accelerates global warming. ... An estimated 15 percent of all greenhouse
gases like carbon dioxide are as a result of deforestation according to the World Wide Fund
for Nature. Forests acts as vital carbon sink as they absorb carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere which contributes to climate change. The disadvantages to deforestation are
an increased amount of carbon dioxide emissions and soil erosion as well as the destruction
of forest habitat and the loss of biological diversity of both plants and animals.

Landslides

Landslides are caused by disturbances in the natural stability of a slope. They can
accompany heavy rains or follow droughts, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions. Mudslides
develop when water rapidly accumulates in the ground and results in a surge of water-
saturated rock, earth, and debris. Landslide Hazards. Landslides include a wide range of
phenomena involving downslope ground movement, such as rockfalls, deep slope failure,
shallow debris flows, and avalanches. Gravity acting on a slope is the primary cause
of landslides, but there are other important and dynamic factors that serve as
triggers. Earthquakes are a major cause of landslides.Landslides occur when masses of
rock, earth material, or debris flows move down a slope due to gravity. Landslides can
occur on any terrain if the conditions are right, and cause significant damage and casualties
to people and property. A landslide is any geologic process in which gravity causes rock,
soil, artificial fill or a combination of the three to move down a slope. Several things can
triggerlandslides, including the slow weathering of rocks as well as soil erosion,
earthquakes and volcanic activity. in some cases human activities can be a contributing
factor in causing landslides. Many human-caused landslides can be avoided or mitigated.
They are commonly a result of building roads and structures without adequate grading of
slopes, poorly planned alteration of drainage patterns, and disturbing old landslides

Flood

The Philippines ranks third among countries most at risk for disasters, including floods,
storms, and earthquakes. In the past 30 years, more than 360 disasters struck the
Philippines, with a total death toll of 33,000 people which affected 120 million people.
Typhoons and floods are the most devastating in terms of their economic and social
impact, accounting for 80 percent of all deaths, 90 percent of the total number of affected
people, and 92 percent of the total economic impact. Here, in barangay Nagkaisang Nayon,
gets flooded easily. With just a short amount of time, floods tend to appear at the streets.

Metro Manila is home to around 15 million people and contributes about 35 percent to the
Philippine economy. Recurrent flooding has been a problem for millions of people in the
metropolis. In 2009, Tropical Storm Ondoy (Ketsana) hit the country, causing damage and
losses equivalent to around 2.7 percent of the country’s economy. In response, the
Philippine government, with financial and technical support from the World Bank,
formulated the Metro Manila Flood Management Master Plan, which was approved by the
National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board in 2012.

Why do floods occur? Flooding occurs most commonly from heavy rainfall when natural
watercourses do not have the capacity to carry excess water. ... In coastal areas, water
inundation can becaused by a storm surge as a result of a tropical cyclone, a tsunami or a
high tide coinciding with higher than normal river levels.

The problem in Nagkaisang Nayon is also garbages. The reason why floods also happen in
a short amount of time in a strong rain. Normally, floods happen in a long amount of time
in a strong rain.

Illegal logging

Illegal logging is the harvest, transportation, purchase or sale of timber in violation of laws.
The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal. Major impacts. The impacts of illegal
logging include environmental, economic and social aspects. Environmental impacts include
the loss or degradation of forests, as illegal logging tends to be associated with poor forest
management. This can result in the loss of habitats and biodiversity. The causes of illegal
logging are manifold. Weaknesses in forest governance in producer countries are typically
the direct cause. However, consumer countries contribute to these problems by
importing timber and timber products without ensuring that they are legally sourced. Illegal
logging and related trade occurs when timber is harvested, transported, processed, bought
or sold in violation of national or sub-national laws. It can alsohappen when forests are
cleared for plantations such as oil palm. Logging can also remove wood for forest
management goals. Logging is a controversial due to its environmental and aesthetic
impacts. Logging impacts the environment in two ways, the timber harvest itself, that is,
the removal of trees from the forest, and secondly by the disturbance caused
by logging operations.

Pollution

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause
adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as
noise, heat or light. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign
substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Most of this
air pollution we cause results from the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, natural gas,
and gasoline to produce electricity and power our vehicles. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a good
indicator of how much fossil fuel is burned and how much of other pollutants are emitted
as a result. Breathing polluted air puts you at a higher risk for asthma and other respiratory
diseases. ... High levels of particle pollution have been associated with higher incidents of
heart problems. The burning of fossil fuels and the release of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere are causing the Earth to become warmer. Effects of Air Pollution. High levels
of air pollution can cause an increased risk of heart attack, wheezing, coughing, and
breathing problems, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat. Air pollution can
also cause worsening of existing heart problems, asthma, and other lung complications.
There are types of pollutions, water, air and land. Water pollution is
the contamination of waterbodies, usually as a result of human activities. Waterbodies
include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. Water pollution results
when contaminants are introduced into the natural environment. Air pollution is a mixture
of solid particles and gases in the air. Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen
and mold spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone, a gas, is a major part of air
pollutionin cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it's also called smog. Some air
pollutants are poisonous. Land pollution is the deterioration (destruction) of the earth's
land surfaces, often directly or indirectly as a result of man's activities and their misuse
of land resources.
