Rope Hydraulic Elevators

The roped hydraulic arrangement is simpler than the telescoping plunger unit because it uses only
a single moving jack section compared to two or even three in the telescoping unit for same rise. It
accomplishes this by using 2:1 roping, which means that the car travels twice as far as the piston. This is
accomplished by passing the rope over a pulley in the piston crosshead. One end of the rope is attached
to a fixed point in the pit below the car (Fig. 32.7). The piston (plunger, jack) lifts the crosshead, which in
turn lifts the car twice as far.

The arrangement shown in Fig. 32.7 uses a single jack and a cantilevered car. Other arrangements
use two jacks to eliminate the lateral building load (Fig. 32.8) A. 2:1 roping is standard in the United States.
The simplicity and reliability of the single- or double-jack roped arrangement has made it in recent years
by far the most common choice for low-rise, light- to medium-duty hydraulic elevators. Because it is a
roped unit, it is equipped with slack-rope safety in addition to the other safeties used on direct-connected
hydraulics.

Thermal stress and strain

By now I assume that you are very much clear about the basics of stress, strain and how they induce. If
not, I recommend you to first read my previous post about stress and strain to know the basics.

Firstly we have to know the how a material behave during temperature change.

Effect of temperature on different material:

All kind of materials whether solid, liquid or gas expands when heated and contracts when cooled down.
This phenomenon is noticeably seen in material like iron, aluminium, copper, water etc. but happens in all
materials. Materials like concrete also expands and contracts but not so much to see the change, this
happens because of the material property known as coefficient of thermal expansion which is different
of different materials and defined below:

 Change in dimension of a body per unit change in temperature of a body is known as coefficient
of thermal expansion.
This simply means that if we change 1 unit of temperature of any body, the measure of amount of change
in its dimension is given by its coefficient of thermal expansion.

It may be volumetric, area or linear coefficient.

SI unit of coefficient of thermal expansion is (1/K) or per degree celcius (℃)

Here is one example for more clarification:

Eg. If the linear coefficient of thermal expansion of a bar is given as 10^-5/•C.

It means if we change 1•C temperature of a bar, change in length of the bar is 10^-5 times the original
length of the bar.
Obviously it increases if we increase temperature and vice versa.

So from above discussion we can easily formulate the formula for change in dimension of any body due
to change in its temperature.
For linear case:

$l = α*dt*L

Where:
$l = change in length of a body
α = coefficient of thermal expansion
dt = change in temperature
L = Original Length

Units:

meter (m) as: (/•C)*(•C)*(m) =m

Unit is same as of Length.

Blogs: Mechanical Ventilation

https://www.pippinbrothers.com/blog/mechanical-ventilation

January 27, 2016

In a recent blog post, we touched upon just how important it is for

homeowners in Wichita Falls, TX and Lawton, OK to focus on air sealing.
Once the living space is sealed, however, it’s important to ensure that the
air you’re breathing is clean and fresh. Otherwise, you and your family will
be stuck breathing in stagnant, potentially contaminated air on a daily
basis. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that air
inside a home is 5 to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air while the
American Lung Association has stated the 50% of all illness is either
caused by or aggravated by poor indoor air quality.
The solution?

Mechanical ventilation. Pollutants can build up in your home without proper

ventilation, which is why it’s so important to install the right system.

What is Mechanical Ventilation?

By light definition, mechanical ventilation is the process of actively

supplying air to and removing it from areas inside the home with the usage
of powered equipment. There are two main types of mechanical ventilation
systems—spot ventilation (exhaust fans in bathrooms and above kitchen
ranges, for example), which is designed to remove the pollutant from the
source, and whole-house ventilation. Whole-house ventilation utilizes
multiple fans and duct systems, and there are multiple different types of
setups to choose from.

 Exhaust:

This whole-house mechanical ventilation system primarily places a home in

a depressurized (negative pressure) state. Exhaust systems are
inexpensive to install and work well in cold climates.

 Supply:

This whole-house mechanical ventilation system puts a home in a

pressurized (positive pressure) state. Supply systems are relatively
inexpensive to install and work best in hot and humid climates.

 Balanced:

This whole-house mechanical ventilation system functions by bringing in

fresh outdoor air to replace polluted indoor air (in equal amounts). Due to
it’s more moderate approach to air ventilation, a balanced system works
well in any climate. The cost to install however is greater than that of a
simple exhaust or supply system.

 Energy Recovery & Heat Recovery Ventilators:

These whole-house mechanical ventilation systems regulate the exchange

of indoor and outdoor air while simultaneously using existing heated or
cooled air. This allows comfortable air to flow through your home without
using a ton of energy. Energy recovery and heat recovery systems reduce
energy costs and work well for homes in naturally humid climates. The cost
of installation for these devices however, is quite high when compared to
that of other systems.

In the end, the type of mechanical ventilation that’s right for your home
should be determined by a home performance contractor, and the team at
Pippin is here to help.

The Benefits of Improved Mechanical Ventilation

Improving mechanical ventilation comes along with a number of important

benefits, with the following being just a few highlights to focus upon:

 Improved Indoor Air Quality — It’s important to realize that the

quality of the air you breathe matters, especially when it comes to the
health of you and your family. Improve mechanical ventilation, and
you’ll in turn improve indoor air quality, not to mention reduce the
chances that mold and moisture could cause issues.
 Enhanced Control — It’s important to be able to control where
you’re air intake is coming from. This reduces the risk of “bad air”
from entering into your conditioned space.
 Better Comfort Levels — There’s a lot to be said about living in a
comfortable home, yet many people have a difficult time dialing-in
comfort levels. Installing a mechanical ventilation system is an
excellent way to achieve instant results.
