ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL SECTOR

Agriculture is a source of livelihood for most of our rural population and engages
about 48% of our country’s labor force and hence can be determined as source of
income for most people.

70% of our country’s population is somehow concerned with the labor force as it
is a source of foo and provides raw materials to the industrial sector along with
contributing to our GDP. Our farmers face many challenges in terms of
competitiveness in the markets and are restricted due the absence of public
services. They face the problems of poor infrastructure, illiteracy and inadequate
monetary solutions with illiteracy being the main problem.

While our farmers face many challenges in the market due to this sector, it also
paves way for improvement. Its importance can be explained as follows.

 Provides employment

Being the source of direct and indirect employment within the country, it affects
the GDP per capita favorably. The increase of which leads to better living
conditions, education and health services which in turn leads to better
economic conditions of a country.

 Increases GDP

Agriculture sector contributes the most to the GDP of Pakistan than any other
sector. The increase in GDP describes our country’s growth and development.
Today the agriculture sector is the third largest sector to contribute to GDP.

 Acts as a food source

UNDP survey shows that a large amount of food produced is being consumed
within Pakistan rather than being exported. While our population rate is growing

 Causes an increase in exports

Pakistan is the greatest producer of wheat rice and cotton. These commodities
could be exported against foreign exchange which can in turn be used for
improving the agriculture sector and improving the economic conditions of the
country.

 Is a source of raw material for industrial sectors

Agriculture is a major asset of a country like Pakistan. And it also a major asset
for our industrial sector. The raw materials produced in one sector are utilized
in the other sector to produce end products which can then be exported in
exchange for foreign currency.

Livestock is another main example of agricultural product used I sports and

leather industries. It contributed to the foreign exchange of Pakistan.

 Helps in the development of infrastructure and banking sector

Infrastructure is the base for economic development and is observed whenever

we wish to see the progress of a country. A good infrastructure refers to god
communication and transport system which a country develops to ensure quick
and timely distribution.

Agriculture also plays an important role in the banking sector. Government has
now realized the importance of agriculture sector in the economy and are now
facilitating the farmers by providing them facilities for the growth of more crop.
This also prevents the farmers and other labor forces from rural areas from
moving to the cities as they enjoy all the necessities in that place.

 Causes decrease in rural poverty

Agriculture sector has played a great role in reducing the poverty in our country.
The green revolution technology used by the farmers has led to better crop
