School Meals
Over the past 4 weeks, I have worked
closely with our school kitchen to make a
few changes. You will see on the ‘School
Meals’ web page on our school site, I have
uploaded our new menu. I have also
included allergen information. Any
changes we make (and they will be minor)
will be made immediately and a new
menu will be uploaded. We intend to run
this menu for the Autumn Term before a
new menu is used in the Spring Term.
As a school, we now have greater
control over the meals that we produce
and the suppliers that we use. We use
two suppliers: Brakes and Littler’s
butchers. We also have greater scope to
make decisions about the ingredients that
we buy. We still have the school
nutritional standards to guide us in our
menus and we have some limitations in
our costs, but some subtle changes are
really starting to make a difference to the
quality of our meals.
I supervise the children and I sit with
them most days and enjoy a school meal;
a number of school staff also sit with the
children. I can honestly say that the
quality, taste, portion size, appearance,
texture, nutritional quality, etc in our
meals is excellent – thank you kitchen
staff! Where Donna (and her team) and I
have tasted something and we think we
can make it better, we have done this
immediately. The kitchen staff have been
great with the changes we have made
(and are very patient with me as I visit
everyday!).
Very soon, we would like to invite
parents into school for lunch as we have
done before. We hope that you also see
some very positive changes that have
been made.
HOWEVER, we have another problem –
one that I am hoping that you can help at
home. You will probably be aware of this
problem as you may also experience it at
home: some children are just not eating
their food. We really encourage the
children to eat as much as they can, we
help them where they need cutting, we
scoop out potato from the jackets – every
need is met. They have to ask permission
before they have their dessert, so we can
check they have eaten their first course.
They always have vegetable or salad on
their plate and they are given a suitable
portion size.

Can you please chat at home to
encourage them to eat their food – it is
genuinely lovely and I really get upset to
see them throwing food away or not
having enough food.
Don’t get me wrong, I have similar
battles at home. I also understand that
not all children like all things. I would like
to work with you so you can be assured
that your children are having a high-
quality meal and that they are eating a
good amount of it. Any feedback or
comments from the children would be
useful – I may need to put other changes
in place to encourage the children.
Reading this back, it appears I have had
a little rant – sorry! I am passionate about
making lunchtimes a special part of the
day – I know that having the right lunch
can be ‘make or break’ for some children
as to how their day is going to be! School
meals have come on a long way since I
was at school (and I am not that old!). Any
support is welcome.
I would like to invite parents to come
into school during the year to have lunch
with us –I would like to invite parents of
Year 1 children into school on 21st
October from 12.00pm for lunch.
Academy
After a short delay over the summer
holiday meaning that the date had been
moved slightly, the school has now
‘reopened’ as an academy school. I am
excited to be working within a team of
dedicated staff in our school and in other
schools in the Trust to ensure that each
school continues to grow in the quality of
education that it offers. Create Learning
Trust currently consists of Sandiway
Primary School, Cuddington Primary
School and Little Leigh Primary School.
From an admin point of view, all
cheques that are written for school now
need to be payable to: ‘Sandiway Primary
School’ – this includes school lunches.
Internet Safety
I hope you found last week’s information
sheet useful - this week we will have a
look at Internet controls.
Macmillan Coffee Afternoon
Another fantastic fundraising event was
held in school last week – thanks to all
involved – an amazing £695 will be sent to
the charity this week.
Parents’ Evenings
We look forward to seeing you next week.
Please note that school clubs normally
running on Tuesday and Thursday won’t
be running (Mr Ault’s club and The Club
operates as normal).
Mr Ault’s Clubs
Mr Ault has asked that I can remind
parents to pay for the clubs – he has a
number of accounts that need to be
settled.
First Aid Training
Last week a letter was sent out to offer
parents some basic training in first aid –
we have had a few sign up and there is
space for more. I highly recommend this –
you never know when you need to call on
these skills in your home with your family.
