VFT1

Time of Flight
Optical Barrier
The new Optical Barrier VFT1 is an innovative
optical barrier based on LED time of flight

One side detection – Without Reflector

The Optical Barrier VFT1 is based on principle of Time of Flight.

An infrared light is emitted in direction of target and receiver will get the diffuse
reflected signal.

 Detection range: from 0.8 to 10 m
 Up to 8 m on black surface (6% remission)
 Target temperature: from ambient up to 1.250ºC
 Response time: 2 ms on white matte surface at 2 m
to 14 ms on black surface (6% remission) at 8 m
 Detection resolution (min. distance between target
and background): between 150 mm and 300 mm
(hot surface)

 Designed for the steel industry environment

 Very easy to install and setup

Very easy to install and setup

 ❶: Sensor status, 3 LEDs

P.P. green = Product Presence,
Ctrl orange = low detection margin
Alarm red = internal temperature problem

 ❷ : Selector switch, to adjust sensitivity

 ❸ : Selector switch, to adjust distance

 Adjustment of Distance

The target distance must be between 0.8 m and 10 m.

The “Dist.” potentiometer must be adjusted between d1

(target distance) and d2 (background distance).
In case of short distance between d1 and d2, turn
clockwise potentiometer to detect on d2, turn it slowly
anticlockwise until the presence product PP turns OFF,
and check detection with a target at d1.

The difference between d1 and d2 should be higher than

150 mm, or 300 mm for black surface target over 6 m or
target with T above 1.000ºC.

 Adjustment of Distance, special cases:
– Detection of small target
For detection of small objects that will not fill completely the detection area, the detection will
be more accurate if the background is far from object. An absorbing surface can even be
used as background to increase repeatability and accuracy of detection.

:
– Detection of target with an angle
If there is an angle of incidence between sensor and target, the performances are affected:
the max. detection distance decrease and the max. response time increase.

– Detection with 2 sensors at the same location:

In case of detection with 2 sensors VFT1 used to detect at same location, the sensors
should be separated by at least 100 mm, as well as the detection area.

 Response time

The response time is automatically adjusted by the sensor.

Typical values of response time, depending on target surface and distance, are
given in this table:

Response Time - Auto Mode (“Sens./Laser” potentiometer position 7)

Distance / Surface White surface (80%) Grey surface (18%) Black surface (6%)
2m 1 ms 2 ms 3,5 ms
4m 1 ms 2 ms 7 ms
8m 2 ms 3,5 ms 14 ms

 Adjustment of Sensitivity

By default, the sensor is set to the highest sensitivity: “Sens./Laser” potentiometer on

position 7. This is optimized for most of the applications and the VFT1 adapts
automatically its integration time.

In some rare applications, it could be necessary to reduce sensitivity (by turning

anticlockwise the “Sens./Laser” potentiometer):
- when the product has a reflective or white surface and the background has an absorbing surface (ex.
Black) or is far.
- when there is a reflective or white surface background beyond 14 m. In such case, it’s also possible to
place a black background plate at this distance, or all type of background plate less than 14m.

 Alignment

A laser pointer helps for alignment.

It is switched ON when sensor is

switched ON and when user turns the
‘Sens/Laser’ potentiometer (also when
‘Dist.’ potentiometer is turned).

It is automatically switched OFF after

15 min.

 CONTROL: gives information of a too low detection
margin (check target surface or clean window)
o ‘Ctrl’ back panel LED = Orange

o ‘CT’ output = 24 VDC

 ALARM: gives information of an internal failure or

too high internal temperature
o ‘Alarm’ back panel LED = Red

o ‘AL’ output = 24 VDC
