Arson suspected
in fire at old seed
cleaning plant

A fire at the old seed cleaning plant on Cen-
tennial Drive in Strathmore last week was de-
liberately set, according to the Strathmore Fire
Department which was first on the scene.
The fire department received the fire call at
about 4 p.m. on Sept. 25.
According to Eric Alexander, Strathmore
Fire Department captain, the department re-
sponded with three fire trucks and 14 mem-
bers. They were assisted by two fire apparatus
and six members from Wheatland West Fire
Department.
“According to dispatch records, it took us
seven minutes from the initial alert to get on
scene, and the fire was extinguished about an
hour after we were on scene; it was complete-
ly extinguished,” said Alexander.
According to Strathmore Fire Department
Chief Trent West, the fire was deliberately set.
“We’re working in conjunction with the
RCMP on this file,” he said. “And as we gather
more information or things are made availa-
ble to us, then we interview whoever was in-
volved.”
West couldn’t say how the fire was started.
The joint investigation between the RCMP and
the fire department is ongoing.
The plant, located on Centennial Dr., was
empty at the time of the fire. It previously
served as the Strathmore Seed Cleaning Plant
for 40 years until 2015 when a new seed clean-
ing plant was built and opened on Highway 21
just north of Highway 1. The old plant is still
owned by Strathmore Seed Cleaning Plant Ltd.

One youth dead following drug overdose

One youth is dead following a drug overdose
from Sept. 22.
RCMP confirm the 16-year-old male youth died
while in hospital.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances
surrounding this incident. The name of the de-
ceased will not be released.
On Sept. 22, RCMP arrived at a Strathmore
residence where EMS was working on a male in
medical distress. The 16-year-old male youth was
transported by ground ambulance and then flown

gation revealed the youth had consumed prescrip-
tion pills.
Earlier that same morning, two 15-year-old male
youths were taken to hospital under the same
circumstances. All youths had attended the same
house party the previous evening and ingested
opioids in pill form.
The investigation is ongoing and police are ask-
ing if you have information about this incident

Take care when using cannabis

According to a recent story in the Cal-
gary Herald, there are over 200 hundred
cannabis stores in Calgary. An addition-
al 100 more stores have been refused
in that city, mostly due to school and
daycare proximity.
With at least four cannabis outlets in
Strathmore, legalization of the drug 11
months ago has sparked public curios-
ity, consumption and concern.
In The Need For Weed, a medical
marijuana presentation during the Se-
nior Power conference in Strathmore on
Sept. 20, local pharmacist Joshua Poteet
presented the facts.
“It is primarily the buds that are used
medically,” he said. “They are more
concentrated, have been studied the
most and are the most well understood.
Medically, the ratio of the cannabinoids,
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD
(cannabidiol), are measured.”
Alberta Health Services states on its
website that THC affects how a person
thinks, acts and feels. “It can make you
feel high,” states the website. “While
CBD can help you feel relaxed without
the high. And it may lessen pain and
other symptoms.”
There are four types of marijuana
dosing: smoking, oral, oromucosal and
vaporization.
“Vaporizing is better than smoking,”
said Poteet. “Swallow or add oils to food
such as baked goods or edibles. Spray
in the mouth to be absorbed through
the skin.” In addition, he said it can be
used “directly on the skin or as a topical
cream (for putting on sore joints).”
Poteet said despite all the hype sur-
rounding the perceived benefits of us-
ing cannabis, it can still be risky.
“We are concerned about increased
impaired driving … and pregnancy vi-
tality,” Poteet said. “Cannabis is known

to have an effect on a woman’s ability
to maintain pregnancy. Miscarriage is
more common, as is low birth weight.”
The effects of cannabis may be de-
layed and last for 12 hours. For exam-
ple, when putting cannabis into baking
and then eating three pieces one right
after the other because the first two
hadn’t taken effect yet. “You (can) have
a severe reaction (to the drug),” he said.
“And when you put cannabis in food, its
(effects) may last a long time.”
When asked how to obtain medical
marijuana, Poteet was explicit. “Consult
a trusted health care practitioner for a
medical document. Then, register with
a licensed producer and place your or-
der.”
Of course, today, cannabis can be
obtained without medical clearance at
various provincially licensed outlets. A
person must be 18 years of age or older
to purchase cannabis and children are
not allowed to enter cannabis stores,
even with an adult. Thirty grams is the
most you can buy or carry at a time.

A LIFE OF THANKSGIVING
This year Thanksgiving Day
falls in the middle of a Federal
Election campaign. And it struck
me just how different the focus
of these two observances are.
The various campaign messages
I’ve been hearing tend to employ
a similar strategy – to encourage
me to be dissatisfied with the
circumstances of my life, to
attribute those negatives to the
past bad management and bad
policies of the “other guys,” and
to warn me that things will not
get better unless “our party”
gains governmental power in
the next Parliament. The details
differ from one party to another,
of course, but the strategy seems
the same. This shouldn’t be
surprising, since in our society
the purveyors of products and
services of every sort employ a
similar strategy to encourage us
to buy what they offer. We are
all bombarded by enticements to
dissatisfaction at every turn.
Thanksgiving, on the other hand,
encourages us to look in the
entirely opposite direction.
While the national celebration
of Thanksgiving is just one day
each year, scripture encourages

like to thank reporter Janet Kanters (Sept.
27), for featuring Colton Sheppard and Av-
ery MacAdam, members of The War Amps
Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program.
As The War Amps enters its second cen-
tury, stories like this help bring important
awareness to the many vita programs we
offer for all Canadian amputees.
Although the Association has developed
many innovative and unique programs
over the past 100 years, there is still much
to do to ensure amputees have the artifi-
cial limbs they need to lead full and active
lives. With the public’s continued support
of the Key Tag and Address Label Service,
our commitment remains to improve the

Hello Strathmore! Welcome to winter.
From fields full of combines to fields
covered in snow for the second Sep-
tember in a row. With trade disputes
hammering our export markets, exces-
sive moisture in the north, drought in
the south and now a heavy wet snow-
fall, our farming friends are having a
rough year. I hope many of you man-
aged to get your crops off before this
latest blow.
I have been travelling the province
this weekend for Alberta Culture Days
and have had an amazing time meet-
ing and seeing so many of you out and
about enjoying the hundreds of activi-
ties and sessions that are available all
over the province. When it comes to cel-
ebrating our culture and communities,
Albertans seem immune to the mucky,
wet and cold weather. Thank you for in-
viting me to your wonderful events. I
have been very touched by the people,
culture and warm receptions across our
magnificent province.
While we are on the topic of Culture
Days there’s a cultural gem right here
in Strathmore: the Strathmore Munici-
pal Library. Every month they have a
featured local artist, special events and
of course books and digital media.
The library is a member of the Mari-
gold Library System, headquartered in
Strathmore, which gives patrons access
to over three million items, videocon-
ferencing and much more. If you are a
patron, you know what a great service
they provide and if you aren’t please
check them out, you’ll be glad you did.
Support Canadian Energy was the
theme of this year’s AUMA in Edmon-
ton. Premier Kenney delivered a force-
ful speech that was uplifting and truth-
ful about the state of our finances in
this province, and how we will solve
those problems together, unified, and
in a thoughtful and common-sense way.
Thank you to our mayors, reeves and
councillors who spoke about concerns
vital to our province and our municipal-
ities. We will get our finances worked
out together. We have overspent in this
province for years, and it will take all
of us together to turn this around, to
make sure we are not mortgaging our
needed services are provided. We are faced with an environ-
ment of low prices for our resources, lack of pipeline ca-
pacity and restrictions on natural gas storage. These are key
issues that handcuff our province and our country’s prosper-
ity. We are actively working on strategies to overcome these
issues, and I would like to thank Associate Minister Nally
on his work with the Canadian Energy Regulator facilitating
more access to the Trans Canada Pipeline System for gas go-
ing into storage during maintenance of the lines, which will
help with volatility in the market. It is a short-term solution
but will help to stabilize prices. We want to revitalize the sec-
tor and attract investment.
We have recently met with the co-chairs of SAIT and NAIT
to find ways to meet labour demands in our province. Minister
Nicolaides, the Minister of Advanced Education, has created
a task force that will look at skilled trades and encouraging
more of our youth to pursue employment in these fields. We
hope to streamline getting credentials and training to really
inspire more people to look to these areas. Skills matter, and
we hope to help accelerate successful high paying careers.
We will be holding our Alberta Advantage Immigration
Strategy Consultations on Oct. 3 in Langdon at the Firehouse

I write to you not as a legislator or minister but as a mother
with deep sadness over the loss of two young men, one to
opioids and the other to a car crash. We also have two other
young men in the hospital due to drug overdoses at a house
party. I wish I had some wisdom to offer, some words to
help with the pain, but I just have tears and my deepest con-
dolences for those who have lost their precious babies. To
the families, we are with you, and you are in our thoughts

You’ve probably noticed the new municipal building construction has begun in the north parking lot in
Kinsmen Park. The parking has been a concern for residents, and we hear you. For the duration of the
project we have outlined available parking (see the map) to highlight alternative spots such as Lakeside
Blvd, Lambert Park and the Ball Diamond Parking lot to grab a spot as you shop and enjoy the park.

In the north end of the parking lot some trees have been removed and transplanted due to construction.
We want to assure residents the most healthy trees being removed around the Devonian Gardens are
finding new homes around the Town; trees will only be moved if absolutely necessary. Our teams will be
watching carefully for wildlife and follow protocols to conserve and protect as necessary. And rest assured
the landscaping for the new area will include garden greenery again. As part of the project over 130 trees
will also be planted upon completion.

Random Thoughts
So, recently I had an op-
eration to remove my gall
bladder. To be honest, it was
a big deal to me, as I’ve nev-
er had an operation before.
And while I’m confessing
(like a good Catholic guy),
I should also tell you I’m
not good with pain. When
I was growing up, I always
played quarterback in our
pick-up football games. I
learned early on that if I got
rid of the ball quickly no
one would tackle me. In fact,
I’ve even asked my dentist
if she’d consider sedation
dentistry for check-ups, but
she won’t. I was not looking
forward to what this surgery
would be.
I also have to admit that
when I’m in very awkward
situations, or where I’m re-
ally nervous, my first instinct
is to lighten the mood and
joke. This can be good or
bad, depending on the situ-
ation. I’m not sure why my
mind works the way it does,
and both my kids swear that
I’ve developed ADHD in my
later adult years. Just before
they wheeled me to the wait-
ing area by the operating
room, I asked if I could go
to the bathroom. I guess the
porter lady felt I should’ve
already done this, but I fig-
ured I’d wait, so I wouldn’t
have to “go” when I was in
that room. With a deadpan
face, she asked me, “are you
able to ambulate?” I replied,
“I could, if I knew what that
meant.” (She did not laugh.)
So, I ambulated as fast as
I could and the porter lady
began to wheel me away,
while Deb accompanied us
(they really shouldn’t give
this job to an old gal, or I
really need to trim down).
She wheezed the whole way
down the hall, and I was
going to ask if she needed
to pull over and rest, but
she probably would have
dumped me from the gur-
ney.
We were finally at the
“holding area” and the sur-
geon came over. She actu-
ally recognized me from our
summer consultation, but I
could still feel the nervous
fear take over.
“Please tell me you got
a good night’s sleep last
night,” I said. “You weren’t
on some bender or clubbing,
were you?”
She laughed (thank God)
and said, “no, I was home
and asleep early.” (Part of
me also thinks that if I joke
and the doctor is happy, he
or she won’t let me die on
the operating table.)
She and the anaesthesiolo-
gist peppered me with ques-
tions, and then the surgeon
asked me if I have a history
of falling. I said, “no, only
from ladders.” (See earlier
column on evil ladders.)
Then the anaesthesiolo-
gist told me something that
stopped all my joking. She
felt with my neck construc-
tion and apnea history, she
should really insert the
breathing tube while I was
awake, and that she’d help
freeze my mouth, tongue
and throat (instantly, I felt
my throat sweat again). I
was suddenly super serious
and listened to every word
… no more jokes for me.
That was the worst part of
the operation, but she ex-
plained every step of the
process and put me to sleep
right after the tube was in.
Now this next part will ei-
ther get a groan from some
of you 19 readers, or I’ll get
an “aw, how cute!” When the
nurse was waking me after
the surgery, I blurted out: “I
have a very pretty wife!”
She came around to the
other side of the gurney, and
I guess I felt I had to make
myself clear again: “I have
a very pretty wife!” (This
turned out to be better than
after a colonoscopy, when I
asked the nurse if she’d read
me a story.)
They called Debbie down
and told her of my romantic
proclamation (I sure hope
this makes up for my stupid
engagement ring story 34
years ago, but only time will
tell).
They wheeled me back
up to the room (I guess the
old porter lady retired) and
I looked forward to a cou-
ple of hours of sleepy-time
rest … then home. It’s fun-
ny after being put out, your
body doesn’t quite work as
well as you’d like. With the
steady drip-drip of the IV
and me drinking ice water,
I had to go to the bathroom,
but nothing was working.
That’s when the nurse said a
word that made me “serious
up” like the breathing tube
warning. She only had to say
the word “catheter” and that
maybe in two hours, they’d
use that. I put my hand on
her arm and said (in a shaky
voice), that’s not going to
happen. Luckily, the vast
amounts of ice water and IV
fluids worked, but they did
keep me overnight, and I
did get a lot of my steps in,
shuffling to the bathroom all
night.
So, that wraps up the story
of how “Gord the gallblad-
der” had to be evicted from
the “old Fule condo.” He
was a crappy tenant, and he
was causing a lot of trouble
for this landlord. I’ve been
poked, prodded, stuck with

When a child is vomiting and has diarrhea, there
is a danger of dehydration. Start with diluted
apple juice promptly to replace the fluid lost.
Begin with small amounts first….a teaspoonful
every 5 minutes and increase as tolerated. But
if symptoms continue to worsen (no tears, dry
mouth, lack of urination). have he child seen by
a physician.
Walking is always touted as being an ideal
exercise for everyone especially seniors. Also
walking at a faster pace will produce a lower
risk of mortality due to all causes. The area of
greatest benefit is on your heart with walkers over
the age of 60 having a 46% lower risk of death
due to cardiovascular disease and if they walked
faster, that lowered risk rises to 53%. A “fast”
walking pace is defined as 5-7 km/hr. Your speed
should be governed by your physical condition so
don’t push it. Any amount of walking is a good
thing….about 2 hours per week.
Time, light and air exposure are the enemies of
vitamin C content in juices. Frozen concentrated
orange juice contain about 86 mg per diluted
cup when opened and this reduced to 39-46 mg
after four weeks. Ready to drink juices have
lower amounts of C (27-65mg/cup) which could
decrease to 0-25mg over the 4 weeks.
Hemophilia is a disease where the body can’t
make blood clots to stop bleeding. It used to be
called “the royal disease”. Queen Victoria had it
and passed it on to some of her children including
Prince Leopold who died at the age of 30.

Entrepreneur Centre sets business owners up for success

Starting a business can be a daunting task and growing a
business can be even more challenging. Strathmore’s Entre-
preneur Centre, located at the Bow Valley College campus
downtown, has a wealth of resources for local business own-
ers, no matter where they are in their business journey.
Open since the summer of 2018, the Entrepreneur Centre
offers a variety of training programs for people who are just
in the idea phase, people who are ready to launch a new
business enterprise and people who want to take their busi-
nesses to the next level. To this end, the centre provides en-
trepreneur education through events, workshops and cours-
es as part of a full cycle entrepreneur training program.
“We are planning to become the entrepreneur hub for this
region, the place where anyone in business feels welcome
to participate in an open and supportive community,” said
project officer Jennifer Neufeld. “We value respect, inclusion,
creativity, teamwork and resilience.”
Different levels of membership are available to suit any
budget and range from $149 per month to $699 per month.

understand their child’s needs, to enhance
parent-child attachment.
Collaborate memberships, for online/virtual mem-
bers who don’t need space but want to be part of
the community support system, include discounts
on entrepreneur workshops and space rentals.
Space-based membership provides entrepre-
neurs with a professional part-time or full-time
space where they can work and meet with clients.
The membership level they choose – Cowork,
Drive, Propel or Elevate – gives them access to
high speed internet, basic copy/print/scan servic-
es, free coffee/tea/water, and use of boardrooms
and technology on a certain number of days per
month, in either a shared space or a private of-
fice.
Membership, however, is not required to par-
ticipate in training events or workshops.
“Our programs and services are geared toward
small to medium regional entrepreneurs in any
stage of business who want to plug into an inclu-
sive and supportive community where they can
access the resources they need, when they need
them,” explained Neufeld. “Our space member-
ships are ideal for those who work from home,
work remotely or need occasional professional
space for meeting clients.”
Many of the workshops are free to attend, like
a double feature on niching and side hustles that
was held in May, or a session on social entrepre-
neurship that was held in June.
Other training sessions have a registration fee,
such as the customer service programs for both
employers and employees, and the Entrepreneur
Roadmap Program.
“Our Roadmap Bootcamp program has had
positive feedback and our participants are also
helping us identify ways we can support them,”
added Neufeld.
One of the Entrepreneur Centre’s recent suc-
cesses is a new Canadian who has started a busi-
ness over the past year. He already has several cli-
ents and is on his way to being able to replace his
income from the multiple jobs he’s been working
in order to support his family back home. “We’re
thrilled to assist him in getting things set up and
off the ground,” Neufeld said.

Alberta Minor Football’s Central Foot-
ball League is well into their season
now, and the Strathmore Community
Football Association Badgers bantam
and peewee teams have each passed
the halfway mark in their respective
schedules.
The Badgers bantam team is ap-
proaching game five of their seven
game regular season. The bantam team
is 2-2 following a chilly 16-14 loss in
their last game against the Hunting
Hills Jr. Raiders at home last weekend
in Strathmore.
The team’s head coach, Greg Zaugg,
called the game a strong defensive
battle with each team doing well to
contain the other into the fourth quar-
ter, when a Badgers error allowed the
Raiders to gain the lead.
Overall, Zaugg said he’s happy with
how the team of 13- to 15-year-olds is
playing. With only about a quarter of
last year’s players returning, many hav-
ing moved up to the high school team,

lied for the Kings, while Landen Bras-
sard picked up the shutout.
The following night, Muenchrath
and Garret Vander Ploeg each picked
up five points and Hammond added
three assists to pace the Kings. Bras-
sard registered 31 saves on 33 shots, as
the Kings scored twice in the first pe-
riod, once in the second and two more
in the third to pick up the win.
“Both nights, I think our d-men sup-
ported each other really well,” said the
coach. “They were making good D-to-
D passes and creating space for them-

exceptionally well in their last game,
trouncing the Huskies 31-6 despite the

“We had a good lead and we got to

Langlois) on the field,” Thiessen said.

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior high
volleyball coaches are feeling positive after their
home tournament this past weekend which saw
the girls finish third and the boys just missing the
playoff round.
“The girls played well, but we need to work
on consistency and positioning” said girls coach
John Reinhart.
“Our first tournament was at SAIT where we
played some 4A schools as well as some smaller
ones. It was a good experience as we finished
first on the consolation side,” he said. “I think the
first couple of weeks has gone well and we are
learning to play as a team.”
The HCC girls are travelling to Medicine Hat for
a tournament this weekend.
Senior boys coach Chase Dziatkewich said he
is pleasantly surprised with the mix of returning
and new players on his team and has high hopes
for the season.
“The boys that I had from last year have im-
proved immensely, and the ones now in Grade
10 have the skill there and willingness to learn,”
he said.
“This tournament was a learning curve. We
ended up just short of making the playoffs but
I feel we were one of the stronger teams,” said
Dziatkewich.
Injuries and prior commitments by some play-
ers meant that others were moved into positions
they weren’t used to, which was where the team
had its struggles.
“If we can improve our passing and court move-
ment, I think we should be one of the stronger
teams to enter any of the tournaments.”
The HCC boys are in Lundbreck for a tourna-
ment this weekend.

BARCLAY, Bruce Daniel
It is with heavy hearts we announce Bruce Daniel Barclay passed
away peacefully on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in Strathmore,
Alberta with his loving wife Winnie by his side. Bruce was born
on September 26, 1927 at Lashburn, Saskatchewan to Daniel and
Julia Barclay. He spent most of his childhood and young adult life working and
RBC living on his family’s farm. Bruce moved to Calgary later in life, in 1961, where he
Strathmore started working for the Alberta Liquor Control Board. It was at this job where he
met Winnie and the two of them were married in 1976. After 25 years at the ALCB,

Bruce retired, having worked his way up from clerk to manager. Winnie and Bruce
spent 15 years of their retirement visiting Arizona every winter. In 1995, the two
of them moved to Strathmore, Alberta. He will be deeply missed by his wife Win-
