QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

1. What is CMC ?

Computer mediated communication (CMC) is a process in

which human data interaction occurs through one or more networked

telecommunication systems. A CMC interaction occurs through

various types of networking technology and software ,including email

Internet relay chat (IRC),instant messaging(IM),Usenet and mailing

list servers. CMC technology saves time and money in IT

organizations by facilitating the use of all communication formats

.CMC is divided into synchronous and asynchronous modes. In

synchronous communication ,all participants are online

simultaneously .In asynchronous communication there are time

constraints on communication messages and responses ,as with

emails .Key CMC features include conversation recordability, formal

communication ,and user identity anonymity ,depending on software

type -such as IM .However, CMC user statement interpretation may

be difficult due to the absence of verbal communication.

2.Explain any two barriers of communications ?

3

Any parameter that limits the purpose or channel of

communication between the transmitter and the receiver is a barrier to

communication. A communication barrier may limit or reduce the ease

at which we communicate and hence the name barrier.

i. Linguistic Barriers

The language barrier is one of the main barriers that limit effective

communication. Language is the most commonly employed tool of

communication. The fact that each major region has its own language

is one of the Barriers to effective communication. Sometimes even a

thick dialect may render the communication ineffective.

ii. Psychological Barriers

There are various mental and psychological issues that may be

barriers to effective communication. Some people have stage fear,

speech disorders, phobia, depression etc. All of these conditions are

very difficult to manage sometimes and will most certainly limit the ease

of communication.

3.What do you mean by ICT?

Information and communication technology (ICT) in

education is the mode of education that uses information and

communication technology to support, enhance and optimize the

delivery of information. ICT can lead to an improved student learning

and better teaching methods. It is proved that the student who is

continuously exposed to technology through education has better

knowledge, presentation skills and innovative capabilities and they

are ready to take more efforts into learning as compared to their

counterparts. Also to improve the quality of education is to make use

of efficient technology in an institution. This will open up more

opportunities for the teachers and students as well. In ICT education

role of teacher is reshaped. Besides his traditional role, he plays a

role of facilitator and using ICT tools coordinates closely with pupil to

enable effective learning environment.

4. What is asynchronous type of e-learning?

Asynchronous means independent of time. So in

the context of learning this means that learners are taking course

material at their own pace and at a time that is convenient for them.
5

Asynchronous learning can be carried out even while the student is

offline. It involves coursework delivered via web, email and message

boards that are then posted on online forums. It allows learners to

post questions and comments on central board for other users to see.

The discussion groups allow students in the same course to discuss

the material in real time. It emphasizes on content comprehension

and not the speed at which the material is absorbed.

5. What are the factors affecting communication?

Factors that influence communication depend on the

elements and components of communication. Suppose there are two

terminals in communication they send, receive or relay messages.

The factors influence intention, attention and duplication and absence

of any one terminal leads to incomplete communication.

 Factors related to sender: Sender’s perception of the receiver

sender’s concept of environment, self-concept, self- knowledge,

the psychological readiness of sender, personal factors such as

age, interest, health, skills etc.

 Factors related to receiver: Intelligence, Gender and age,

Needs and motivation, Attitudes, beliefs and values,

Concentration and interest, Self- esteem , Perception of leaner

about the sender.

 Factors related to atmosphere: Openness and supportiveness

,empathetic and sympathetic, devoid of noise.

 Factors related to message

a) Verbal

Simple, easy to understand words, accuracy and

precision use of words, simplicity and clarity, imagination
and originality.
b) Non verbal
Style and posture, language speech delivery
intonation, Gestures and body movements, Facial
expressions and emotions, Clothing and presentation.
