to £16,983. With potential progression once in
post to £18,923 a year.

Job Summary

As a member of the Health & Fitness Services team the gym instructor will be
responsible for the gym environment. This includes general duties that will facilitate
the continued delivery of service to members of the UBS facility. This would include
excellent customer service, regular patrols of the gym floor correcting bad technique,
offering advice, enforcing the house rules and monitoring equipment for problems.
Other duties would include delivering group inductions, cleaning, maintenance and
the development of the Thrive Team services (health & fitness assessment,
programmes, consultations & advisories) and strategy
.

Main Duties

To provide an excellent customer service to all clients of UBS

 To ensure that all customers are treated with the utmost respect and courtesy
at all times. (reference Customer charter)
 To maintain high standards of customer relations and uphold excellent
customer service at all times through continual, friendly interaction with
customers.

 Monitoring the Fitness Suite of rooms to ensure


 Safe and effective technique
 Customer service level standards are maintained
 Adherence to House rules
 Completion of maintenance procedures
 All users of the free weights facility have red cards.

 Shifts are regularly unsupervised and the role requires a degree of individual
responsibility and decision making. The individual must be able to react with
good judgement to customer enquiries and complaints, referring when
necessary.

 To deliver one to one and group demonstrations including group introductions


to the fitness suite.

 To assist in providing a unique, friendly and challenging fitness environment


for all users (e.g. devising gym challenges, social events, charity events,
membership promotions, information boards etc.).

 To attend any training sessions & staff meetings in order to keep up to date
with relevant procedures, services, fitness knowledge and current industry
trends. This includes regular 1-2-1s and Personal Development Review
meetings

 To be proactive in advising UBS clients in the competent and effective use of


the facilities provided. Educating clients to monitor their own training and
relate it to results and performance

 Employing diplomacy to resolve conflict

To contribute to the day-to-day operation of the Fitness Centre by being


responsible for ensuring a healthy & safe training environment.

 Prepare the facility prior to opening up.

 All equipment is ready for use

 On closing that facilities are set up for the efficient re-opening the following
morning

 To be responsible for the safety of the exercise environment and its users at
all times. This involves ensuring gym users are operating equipment in a
safe, responsible manner and diplomatically but firmly dealing with any
misuse of equipment.

 Dealing with incidents, injuries and emergencies, completing all relevant


documentation and processing it.
 To ensure all fitness facilities adhere to health and safety requirements with
guidance.

 To complete the necessary tasks laid out in the FS ‘Normal Operating


Procedures’ manual
 To ensure faults are reported and repairs monitored and recorded.
 To ensure that the Fitness Suite is maintained to the USB standards
of cleanliness, hygiene and presentation. Includes re-ordering of
cleaning materials

 Can identify and suggest solutions for operational problems having a regular
input into improving efficiency of the services provided. (subject to approval).

 When on duty, must be able to act as a mentor for general exercise issues,
casual staff and work experience.

To provide high quality services to UBS clientele and to raise awareness of


available services.

 To deliver all Thrive services including exercise programs, fitness/health


assessments, specialist group sessions etc, in accordance with Normal
Operating Procedures

 To actively promote via word of mouth, all health and fitness memberships
and/or services available through UBS.

 To actively contribute to website articles and resources to promote the services


and expertise within the team as well as updating fitness suite notice boards etc

To contribute to the Performance Sport & Fitness team in terms of planning,


aiding other colleagues in their service provision, and representing the
FS team in cross-sectional projects as required.

 To be involved with new initiatives that will improve existing services, member
enjoyment of the facility, and /or the retention or recruitment of members.
This involves attending all Fitness Services staff meetings and Performance
Sport & Fitness team meetings and the occasional USB meeting.

 To answer any queries regarding UBS, referring when necessary.

 To ensure that feedback from members is forwarded appropriately within the


organisation.

 To be competent in the use of computer systems including Microsoft


packages.

 To be involved as part of a team of gym instructors working on USB projects


(e.g the customer care survey, developing questionnaires, devising methods
e.g. incentives to try to ensure customer participation, to be involved with
workplace health initiatives)

 To be proactive in acquiring new knowledge. To contribute to and attend team


CPD sessions.
To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be requested within the post
holders grading

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

NVQ Level 3 that required at least 80 hours of training (e.g. YMCA, Premier, ACSM)

Current first aid.

REPS Accreditation (Level 3)

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of health & safety as related to a training environment.

Able to deliver our services including personal exercise programmes, health/fitness


assessments, personal training, conduct coaching for members, observing
confidentiality issues and the professional code of ethics.

SKILLS

Excellent communication (verbal), interpersonal and organisational skills. Normal


tact and courtesy in dealing with others is required.

Understanding and demonstration of the principles of customer care.

IT skills (MS Word, Powerpoint, Excel).

Problem-solving, planning and organisational skills.

Ability to take own initiative and ability to work effectively within a team.

Must be familiar and willing to take responsibility for the gym environment. “Attention
to Detail” is a skill.

Time management skills

EXPERIENCE

Recent experience of working in a busy gymnasium environment having contact and


coaching a wide range of different users/visitors.

Track record of punctuality and approachability; smart appearance.
