Bearing is a mechanical element that permits relative motion between two parts, such
as the shaft and the housing, with minimum friction. The functions of the bearing are
as follows:
(i) The bearing ensures free rotation of the shaft or the axle with minimum friction.
(ii) The bearing supports the shaft or the axle and holds it in the correct position.
(iii) The bearing takes up the forces that act on the shaft or the axle and transmits
them to the frame or the foundation.
INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
The current size of the bearings market in India inclusive of exports stands
approximately Rs. 3 trillion. With the rapid industrialization, the Indian bearings
industry has doubled in the last five years and has registered annual gains well
above the global average of ~35%.With increased infrastructure and
industrialization, at least, this trend should continue for next five years. India is
among the fastest growing markets for bearings. The organized segment
constituting global players as Timken, SKF and others should account for
approximately Rs. 1 trillion. Close to 40% of the total demand is fulfilled through
imports with the balance being met by indigenous products.
The Indian Bearings Industry is well poised to achieve strong growth in coming
years owing to rising domestic demand in the auto sector and in Industrial
applications. Given the government of India’s focus on the manufacturing sector,
Indian Bearings Industry is expected to grow in the coming years. The
government has already made clear its continuing focus on infrastructure from
Power and Oil & Gas, Roads, Ports and Airports. As per the planning
commission’s estimates, the government has planned substantial investment in
the 12th Five Year Plan aggregating USD 1 trillion. This infrastructure spending
will lead to growth in the manufacturing sector, which in turn will have a positive
impact on bearings industry. As per the Auto Components Manufacturers
Association (ACMA), the Indian friction components industry is likely to grow to
US$ 110 billion by 2020 capturing the domestic market share of ~US$ 80 billion.
The share of the auto components industry in the country’s GDP is likely to
increase to 3.60% by 2020, up from 2.40% in FY12.
CLASSIFICATION OF BEARINGS
Depending on the type of friction, bearings are classified into 2 main groups:-
1) Sliding contact bearings
2) Rolling contact bearings
Note: You have to go through the detailed process on your own and
also manufacturing processes for the other parts of bearing.
The industry you will setup must consider following points into consideration:
• Selecting a very suitable location for industry to be setup, where there is
a flourishing market for your products and availability of raw materials is
cheap and unlimited.
• A planned and systematic “plant-layout” that considers every aspect e.g.
location of manufacturing area with respect to storage of raw material,
proper placing of stores etc. facilitating least possible inventory
transport. (Layout drafted in AutoCAD/ Pro-E or any other software with
exact dimensions will be awarded special credit )
• Some more factors that must be included are break even analysis,
inventory analysis, a detailed cost and revenue analysis, forecasting
and master production schedule (MPS), material requirements planning
(MRP), economic order quantity and even more analytical study will
fetch you more points.
