Final Reflection
In the beginning of the class I chose the career of zoology. I want to follow this path
because I have a passion for animals. I want to see the world and learn how to save their
environments and species. My passion is what motivates me. I have wanted to be a zoologist
since I was in middle school, but I didn’t see it as being a goal I can achieve. I am still attracted
to this career. I think doing the career exploration sheet helped me see deeper into what ill truly
be doing, and that excites me! I feel that this is a good match for me because I enjoy observing
the animal’s behaviors and learning about their habitats.
In our second week I learned a lot about notetaking. While looking at my own notes I
noticed all the changes I could make. One of the changes being adding the class name to my
notes. I find this useful for organization purposes. Another useful change I could make is adding
more room between bullet points, so I can add more information in later. Lastly, I could label my
bullet points more clearly, so I know what information goes with a certain topic. I found all this
helpful so my notes will be easy to follow when it comes time for the test.
In week three I came up with the degree plan that is based on my program. At UCBA I
hope to achieve all the goals and classes that are intended for my program. I would love to get an
internship based around my degree. I hope to get experience in my field so that when I graduate,
I can begin to work as a zoologist. I have hopes to work at the Cincinnati Zoo!
In week four I did some research on the substance Bouin’s Solution. I discovered that it
was made by a French biologist Pol Bouin. It is used as a fixative for gastrointestinal tract
biopsies which allows crisper and better nuclear staining. I found that due to the picric acid in
this solution that it can be explosive. For this to happen the solution must be fully dry and it will
explode when friction is added.
In week five I used Bloom’s Taxonomy levels to make some questions about chapter
five. My two best questions were Select the key points the author was trying to make by adding
the section about Olive Thomas and Compare the stories involving Gertie and Olive. I chose
these questions because I think they help us understand why the author chose those stories to tell.
These questions make you think about how the stories affect the rest of the chapter. They also
they worked well with Bloom’s Taxonomy levels.
In week six I did an assessment of my pre-algebra exam and how I reviewed for it. One
of the strategies I could use to better prepare for my exam would be to spend more time going
over my review. I could also take more thorough notes to use on the exam. Finally, I could also
move on to a new question if I am having trouble finding the answer.
The textbook for this class is The Poisoner’s Handbook. I enjoyed reading this
book. I enjoyed the drama in this chapter. It really showed how some things don’t change
through time in terms of media and family dramas. I like how it illustrated how the chemicals
were used during that time. I also found it interesting to learn about how the toxicologist used
different processes to discover that mercury poisoning had occurred.
During the course I created an e-portfolio using Weebly. I found the overall making of
the website to be very helpful. I found it helpful because it gave us a chance to learn how to
create a website before we would have to do it in the “real world”. I enjoyed making the my
calendar page. It helped me understand the importance of keeping a calendar to stay organized.
Another page I found useful was the module reflections page. I thought it was nice to be able to
look back at the different topics we learned each week.
I enjoyed a lot of things in this course. I enjoyed making the e-portfolio because it helped
me stay organized through the class. I liked the textbook. I enjoyed how it explained how the
different chemicals were used in the past and how science has improved. I also enjoyed working
with partners to see how we can improve our work. It’s nice to get our peer’s opinions since they
are also doing the work. They might have a better idea on how to improve or do things easier.
One of the things I think you should keep for next semester is the guest speakers. I think they
helped us see all the potential UCBA has to offer us. I also think you should keep assigning the
groups different chapters. I think this helped us learn about the different chapters without having
to spend a lot of time individually reading the book.
