Goal of Study

-To identify the most effective mode of communication for Gonzaga

Administration to reach the students

- Studies have shown that college students spend about 9 hours a day on their
phones

-We want to know their preferences to help increase event attendance and
improve the campus wide alert system
Research Design: Questionnaire
- Descriptive: info is collected without changing the environment
- Behavior
- Attitudes
- Characteristics
- Cross-Sectional study: one time interaction between different groups of
people
Hypothesis 1
*Instagram is the least effective form of communication to the students*

-Asked questions on a five point scale from least-most effective

Findings: Reject the null hypothesis

-YikYak is the least effective

-Facebook is the most effective

Hypothesis 2
*Underclassmen rely more heavily on email than social media*

-Used a multiple comparison of means ranking least/most reliant

Findings: Reject the null hypothesis

-Facebook is the most reliable for underclassmen (and the whole population)

-YikYak is the least reliable

Conclusion: Direct positive correlation between reliability and effectiveness

Hypothesis 3
*Word of mouth communication will be most effective among Juniors.

● Multiple comparison of means

● 5 point scale
● We accept the hypothesis
Hypothesis 4
*Facebook is the most effective social media site for reaching students.

● Multiple comparison of means

● 5 point scale
● We accept the hypothesis
Hypothesis 5
*If Gonzaga implemented a text-message alert system for individual’s specific
interests, students would be more satisfied with Gonzaga’s communication
methods.

Results: For this hypothesis we used a one sample t-test where the mean must be
greater than three at a 95 percent confidence level to illustrate interest. Based on
our data, the students would be likely to sign up for the text message system since
the sample estimates has a mean of x at 3.5849
Hypothesis 6
*Underclassmen attend more events than upperclassmen do.

Results: For this hypothesis we used a welch two sample t-test. We asked the
participants how many times per month they typically attended events on or off
campus.
Hypothesis 7
*The majority of students check MorningMail once a week regardless of school
or grade.

Results: 22.6% do not check it

- 77.36% do check it
- One-tailed p-test
- Accept hypothesis
Hypothesis 8
*Students attend events mainly for work and school interests

- Paired T-test

- Reject hypothesis
What does this mean for Gonzaga’s
Administration?
- Utilize Facebook
- E-mail
- Text-alerts
- Ineffective methods
Limitations of Study
- Sampling error
- Sample was not representative of the whole population (subset)
- Convenience survey

- Unanswered questions

- How could we improve?
