TALLER No.1

1. A pipe of 4 m in diameter carries water with a speed of 1.45m/s, and a depth of 2.5m in the center of the
section. Calculate the hydraulic radius, hydraulic depth, the width of the free surface and the section
factor for critical flow (Zc). Calculate the flow in the channel.
2. A trapezoidal channel has a bottom width of 6m and side slopes 3:1 (1 vertical to 3 horizontally); ie z =
3) carries water with a depth of 1.79m and 0.933m/s of speed. Determine the hydraulic depth, the
hydraulic radius; calculate the Reynolds Number and the Froude Number, if the water temperature is
25Cº. Specify the flow rate in the channel.
3. A channel with a rectangular section has a bottom width of 4.0m and 0.0022 of longitudinal
slope, leads a flow of 18m3/s with a flow depth of 3.8m. A) Calculate the hydraulic radius, the
Froude number and value of the pressure at the bottom of the channel. B) If the slope of the
channel changes to 0.0055, the depth changes to 1.13m, calculate the velocity of the flow and
the same parameters for this condition. What can you conclude from the results?
4. A channel has a composite section formed by a trapezoidal section of 5m width at the bottom
and side slopes z = 3, and a rectangular section at the top of 1.5 m larger than the upper width at
each side of the trapezoidal section. If the trapezoidal section has a height of 2m and the
channel carries water with a total depth of 3.9 m. in the cross section, determine the wetted
perimeter of the entire section, the hydraulic radius, the average depth and the Froude number
if the average speed in the composite section is 1.5 m/s.
5. A rectangular channel with a bottom width of 5m and a depth of 2.3m carries a flow 15m3/s
with an average speed of 1.28m/s, on a longitudinal slope of 0.00025. A) Calculate the specific
energy-depth curve (E-Y) using a coefficient alpha of 1.03 for the kinetic energy and depths of
(2m, 1.8m, 0.6m and 1.0). What should be the depth in the section so that the Froude number is
equal to 1?
