Paraben is a man-made preservative chemical, often used by manufacturers in a variety
of domestic products, such as cosmetics, lotions and moisturizers, shampoo, shaving, and
tanning products. Parabens are cost-effective and provide protection against micro-organisms
for an extended period of time. Example of paraben are methylparaben, propylparaben and
butylparaben. Paraben is dangerous as they can produce some serious side effects to our health.
Parabens interfere with the functioning of the endocrine system. Specifically, parabens are
endocrine disruptors stored in the body tissue that interfere with glandular activity and hormone
production. Paraben are also said to accelerate the skin aging process. Several studies from UK
found that paraben is associated with the male reproductive system. The result reported low
sperm counts as well as decreased levels of testosterone in men.

A common ingredient in personal care products, sodium lauryl sulphate, or SLS, is an

additive that allows cleansing products to foam. According to the Environmental Working
Group's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, SLS is a "moderate hazard" that has been linked
to cancer, neurotoxicity, organ toxicity, skin irritation and endocrine disruption. SLS is an
emulsifier and foaming agent commonly used in cosmetic products and industrial cleaners.
SLS is present in most body washes, soaps, shampoos, toothpastes and laundry detergent. The
Cosmetic Ingredient Review reports that SLS, SLES and ALS are irritants at concentrations of
2 percent or greater and recommends that cosmetic products should not contain concentrations
greater than 1 percent. Undiluted SLS can cause skin and eye irritation, as well as nausea,
vomiting and diarrhea if ingested, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health.

Triclosan is a phenyl ether compound having the chemical formula C12H7Cl3O2,

indicating that there are 12 carbon atoms, seven hydrogen atoms, three chlorine atoms, and two
oxygen atoms for every one molecule of Triclosan. In the concentrations found in soap,
Triclosan functions as a bacteriostatic and fungistatic agent. It does not kill bacteria or fungi,
rather it inhibits their growth by inhibiting the fatty acid synthesis necessary for reproduction
and cell membrane construction. Because it inhibits bacterial and fungi growth, it also acts as
a preservative, increasing the shelf-life of the product. Triclosan has a pleasant odour and
therefore also can function as a fragrance or deodorant.

Glycerin is a non-oily ingredient that absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, helping
hold water in the product, slowing the evaporation process. It can also function as a skin
conditioning agent as well as reduce the soap's viscosity.

2
Fragrances make products smell more pleasant to the consumer. They often used to
cover up the smells of other compounds in the mixture or to give a specific brand a signature
smell.

Further criteria have been listed in order to choose the best product. Therefore, a scoring
models have been conducted. The first is unweighted (0-1) factor scoring model, then
unweighted factor scoring model and lastly weighted scoring model.

2.0 Question 2

2.1 Feasibility of the Market

2.1.1 Competition

Every company who makes a body wash is a competitor. They are the people who we
are trying to beat and also eventually buy out so we need have to monopoly on the body wash
industry.
One of the competitors are Kao Corporation, a cosmetic company headquartered in
Nihonbashi-Kayabacho, Chuo, Tokyo, Japan. The founder of Kao Corporation was Tomiro
Tagase. The most popular brand ownership by this company is Bioré and Laurier. Kao
Corporation offers wide product lines and especially strong in shower gel with its Bioré brand
leading sales. Bioré U has a long-established strong presence in bath and shower in Japan. Lion
Corporation enjoyed strong growth in 2017 following the success of its new body wash brand,
Hadakara, launched in 2016. After its initial success, the company has continued to add new
products under the brand to expand the product line-up.
Moreover, Colgate-Palmolive also a great rival. Colgate-Palmolive is an American
worldwide consumer products’ company focused on the production, distribution and provision
of household, health care and personal care products. There are more than 30 brands under
this company such as Protex and Palmolive. Palmolive is trademark of a line of products
produced by the American company Colgate-Palmolive. This company sell associated product
such as soap and shower gel. The biggest achievement in 2017 by Colgate-Palmolive is
America Most Trusted Brands at 2017 BrandSpark.

2.1.2 Anticipated Future Market Potential

Shower gel and bathing products has shown huge potential from last decade. Rich
consumer and young adult are the end users of these products that are reasons the market is
stagnant up to urban areas. The future market trends based on the past and current market are
aspects of the Shower Gel industry. Because of that, in order to predict future market potential
it is very important for us to study about current market analysis.
The strengthening health and wellness trend in Malaysia led to a preference for bath and
shower ranges incorporating natural ingredients. Using product with natural ingredients is

10
important in order to minimize exposure to chemical component. There are many organic
based shower products sold in Malaysia such as HIMALAYA Protecting Neem and Turmeric
Body Wash and Lamoon Organic Moisturizing gel wash. All of this product indicated rising
demand from consumers, as natural ingredients such as green tea, white tea and ginger are
believed to be highly effective in smoothing the skin.
Body shower gel saw strong demand from Malaysians. More consumers are switching
from bar soap to body shower gel due to changing lifestyles. There are many benefits using
shower gel such as shower gels do not dry our skin and shower gels do not cause skin problems
even if more than one person uses them. Usually, they contain pumps through which one spray
the content or one just has to squeeze the bottle. This way germ does not have on the container.
Soaps when handled by too many people can get infected. In the case of soaps, it is advisable
for a person to use a separate soap as it may cause skin diseases.
Momo Shower Gel is a Halal personal care product. We are predicting that Momo
Shower Gel will be on the top of demanding product in the future because in 2017, there was
rising demand for halal-certified beauty and personal care products, and bath and shower was
no exception. A growing number of halal-positioned brands, such as Safi, Sumaiyyah and
Mu’min launched body shower gel.
We are predicting, Momo Shower Gel is expected to be led the shower gel product and
it will be sell in more than 100 countries the future.

2.1.3 Marketing

Our marketing objectives are to increase market share every quarter and to develop brand
awareness, acceptance and quantifies by decrease in customer acquisition costs. Our company
will engage in strong advertising and marketing events and strategy in order to retain our share
in bath and shower industry.
Firstly, we were planned to sell our product in Watson’s, Guardian, Giant, Tesco and
AEON because this place usually gained attention amongst consumers. We also designed eye-
catching packaging to attract people to buy our Momo Shower Gel.
Secondly, price is determined based on the best quality available, convenience and
timeliness in acquiring the product. We will consistently be moderate from the price points
offered by others company that provide organic shower gel.

11
Thirdly, the advertising and promotion will be through brochures, newspaper and
commercial such as television, radio and social media. The plan is make a TV commercial
after the work time which is at the time 5 pm until 10 pm. We chose that time because that is
when most people watch television.

2.1.4 Price

We are going to be one of the organic based shower-gel which will put us at both
advantages and disadvantages. We will be known as one of the organic based shower gel
supplier in Malaysia and international, but a disadvantage of being so expensive. The price for
one bottle of Momo Shower Gel (300 ml) is RM 15.

2.1.5 Potential Buyers

The people we trying to sell to is the upper-middle class and upper class. This is
considering a high-end product. It is going to be aimed at a certain demographic of people.
Young adult and working people, who want to smell nice. It will however be available to older.
It will be available to all races and colours. This majority of working people and young adult
will spend a large percentage of their money on shower product. We will however aim it at
large cities populated by young adult, because that is our main target. We will also aim it at
people and cities with a large budget, because we are going to be one of the expensive price
body wash available on the market. It will not matter what the occupation is of the customer
is though. Young adults are usually trying the new fad and hippest thing at the time, which we
are counting on and hoping to use to gain their support until we are much better known. Even
at that big of a threat, we will hopefully sell as much or more than any competitors.

2.1.6 SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding our strengths, weaknesses

opportunities and threats.

12
2.1.6.1 Strength:

The product is an organic product which is skin friendly and environment friendly. It
also does not cause any harm to the skin. The product contains pumps through which one spray
the content or one just has to squeeze the bottle. This way germ does not have on the container.
If handled by too many people, consumer can’t get infected.

2.1.6.2 Weakness:

It is a new product in the market, so people will feel hesitated to use it. The rate of
adaptation will be less. There will be low sales at the beginning with negative profits. Some of
Malaysians people are unaware of the usage of organic shower gel, so it will be difficult for
the company to have a market position.

2.1.6.3 Opportunities:

Since it is only one name with only one smell, we could make several smells and colours
to correspond to each name, such as making a Momo shower gel with lime.

2.1.6.4 Threats:

Most all body washes come in several fragrances, and so far we only have one which is
mom flower. That puts us in a tough spot because people might get tired of the same smell.

2.2 Feasibility Study of Process

2.2.1 Liquid Soap Manufacturing Process

1) Preparation of raw materials

The first phase in the manufacturing of soaps is the selection of raw

materials. Raw materials are selected on the basis of various factors, including -
cost, human and environmental safety, compatibility with other ingredients, and the
performance characteristics and appearance of the final product. While the actual

13
production process may vary from company to company and manufacturer to
manufacturer, there are some steps, which are common to all types of cleaning
products.

2) Saponification process of soap manufacturing

All the oils are fed to settling tank and solid alkalis are diluted by adding
water according to required concentration (40% - 50%). After that the oils and alkali
are fed to the soap kettle for saponification. In soap kettle, the oils will react with
aqeous potassium hydroxide (KOH) and converted into soap and glycerol. Reaction
is exothermic and heat is controlled by gradual addition of KOH. Helical pipe
agitator is used in soap kettle which is circular pipe having perforations and steam is
used for mixing.

3) Glycerin removal

Glycerin is more valuable than soap, and hence most of it is removed for its
uses in more expensive cosmetic products. Some of the glycerin is left in the soap to
make it soft and smooth. Soap is generally not very soluble in salt water, while
glycerin is, hence the salt is added to the wet soap thereby causing it to separate out
into glycerin and soap in salty water.

4) Soap purification

In the soap purification stage, any remaining potassium hydroxide is

neutralized with a weak acid, like citric acid and two thirds of the remaining water
is removed to obtain pure soap.

5) Finishing

The final stage of industrial soap manufacturing process, finishing stage

involves mixing of additives, such as colours, preservatives, and perfume into soap,
which is then shaped into bars for sale.

2.3 Feasibility study of technology

2.3.1 Description of the Industry

Our company is mainly produce a body wash with several specifications that satisfied
the customer’s need. Body wash is one of the basic needed that all of the people should have

14
ones. The body wash liquid solution that is used to clean the body. The body wash that we had
been produce is an antibacterial with no paraben. Paraben is substance that can produce some
serious side effects effect to our health.

2.3.2 Current technology Analysis

As we all know that people from previous era used traditional as turbine mixers and
paddle agitators to make body wash which make them unfortunately often suffer from
inefficiencies related to slow wet-out and incomplete dissolution. This situation causes the little
productions of product. It is very difficult and time consuming to break the powders form
agglomerates to be apart. Manufacturers resort to filtering out these lumps or devoting separate
mixing tanks for certain powders. These solutions however negatively impact production costs
and maintenance requirements.

This is why our company used the Ross Solids/Liquid Injection Manifold (SLIM)
Technology in order to produce body wash. a new generation rotor/stator mixer designed for
rapid addition of powders without subsequent lumping. This technology combines solids and
liquids at precisely the point where intense mixing takes place such that agglomerates are
prevented from forming in the first place. Powders like xanthan gum, carbomers, guar,
cellulose gum (CMC), gum Arabic, aloe vera, citric acid and titanium dioxide are quickly
dispersed or solubilized due to the SLIM’s unique mechanism of injecting powders sub-surface
right into a high shear zone. It can dramatically reduce cycle time from several hours to mere
minutes, improving not only process efficiency but also product quality.

Our company also used batch with continuous process in making body wash which this
process takes from four to eleven days to complete, and the quality of each batch is inconsistent
due to the variety of oils used. This procedure is employed by large soap manufacturing
companies all around the world today. Exactly as the name states, in the continuous process
soap is produced continuously, rather than one batch at a time. Technicians have more control
of the production in the continuous process, and the steps are much quicker than in the batch
that can take only about six hours to complete a body wash.

After all the ingredients are added to the batch, a sample is taken to the Quality Control
(QC) lab for testing. Physical characteristics are checked to make sure the batch adheres to the
specifications outlined in the formula instructions. The QC group runs tests such as pH
determination, viscosity checks, and appearance and odour evaluations. They can also check

15
the amount of detergent that is in the formula and whether there is enough preservative. If the
batch is found to be "out of spec," adjustments can be made. For instance, acids or bases can
be added to adjust the pH, or salt can be added to modify the viscosity.

Although, batch or kettle has small production scale, but it is one of the equipment that
is easy to clean, high conversion per unit volume, and has a flexibility of operation which the
same reactor can produce one product at one time and a different product the next. We also
used centrifugal pump, multifunctional mixing machine, rotary sealing machine, stamping
machine and settling tank in order to produce our own product which is body wash. In this
case, we used centrifugal pump because it is including multi-stage designs and those for high
inlet pressure, can handle most low viscosity applications. Centrifugal pumps can provide the
most cost effectives solution.

2.3.3 Anticipated Future Market Potential

In spite of a few units manufacturing body wash, the demand is ever increasing. The
use of this product is not limited because it is one of the basic items that needed in our daily
life. Most of the local people started using this product to get a great advantage. With the
increase in education and advertisement in the mass media, the people in every walk of life,
including lower middle class are also aware of the use of body wash to their advantage in every
respect. We also producing body wash that requested by the people to be more hygiene,
antibacterial, and more.

2.3.4 Supplier

It is become much easier because the technology that had been used in producing body
wash can have in local company. The batch equipment is very widely used in lots of industries.
So, we can buy that equipment from lots of companies that sells batch. We had done some
survey and research about the price of all the equipment that we need in order to produce body
wash. We have to do more details about the price of the equipment to ensure the budget had
not been running out from the planning that had been decided.

7.0 Question 7

The termination of this project is by termination-by-starvation. Termination by

starvation can happen for a number of reasons, such as political, a placated sponsor, or general
budget cuts. Meredith and Mantel argue that termination by starvation is not an outright act of
termination at all, but rather a willful form of neglect by slowly decreasing the project budget
to the point where the project cannot possible remain viable. In this project, the budget has
been squeezed until the project is only a project in name only. This happened due to the project
was originally suggested by a special client. The project was assigned to certain members along
with a clerk whose duty is to issue a “no-progress” report once each quarter.

30
8.0 Question 8

8.1 The Advantages and Disadvantages of Building the Factories Near Urban Area

Building factory near the urban area can increasing the economic growth and bring
more job opportunity to local peoples. But the bad effect that the factory would cause is the
matter we can’t ignore. First of all, factory would discharge a mass of contaminant and release
a lot of harmful gas, the river will be polluted, soil and air near around the community will
become noxious, the people’s health will under serious threaten. More seriously, there is a big
river near our community, this river is one of the most water resource in our city, it provides
more than half of the city’s people of drinking water. If factory is build, half the city’s people
would be affected. Thus, the benefit that the factory bring are too less not compare with the
bad influence it caused.

8.2 Differences of Fatty Material in Soap

Total fatty material is one of the most important characteristics describing

the quality of soap. It is defined as the total amount of fatty matter, mostly fatty
acids, that can be separated from a sample after splitting with mineral acid, usually
hydrochloric acid. Bathing soap is made up of moisturizers and cleansing agents
that work together to soften skin and clean it. Bathing soap contains low total fatty
