THE IMPACTS OF FACEBOOK ADDICTION TO THE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE OF

GRADE XI STEM STUDENTS IN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF ASIA AND THE

PACIFIC

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, social media is very rampant among students just like Youtube,

Twitter, Instagram and most especially Facebook. We all know that this kind of

websites are addictive but based on our observation, Facebook is the most visited site

nowadays. Many students consume their time using this kind of application as a hobby

in their leisure time. They did not know that they are being addicted to it already .

instead of scanning their notes, reading their books or even doing their assignments,

they prioritize using their cellular phones just to share not important things; posting

pictures, videos, problems, or feelings and any nonsense things. Some are not sleeping

on time and they are going to school late. They are using Facebook even class hours or

discussion. They cannot focus on their studies or academic performances; such as

activities in school, recitation. As concerned students , we are not saying that Facebook

is bad but it’s just a matter of discipline of every individual in using it.

HYPOTHESIS

Alternative Hypothesis

There is a significant effect of using Facebook to the academic excellence of the

Grade XI STEM students.

Null Hypothesis

There is no significant effect of using Facebook to the academic performance of

the Grade XI STEM students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The main focus of this research is to give knowledge to tge students who

doesn't know or even realizing the bad effects of using facebook.

Our research study needs the total list of all Grade XI STEM students to know

how it works and how do Facebook continuously affects to the academic performance

of every Grade XI STEM students. This focus the whole population of the said

respondents. In order to assure the collected data, we are conducting an assessment of

all students individually.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study focused on the effects of using Facebook to Grade XI STEM students

of ISAP. The results of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Student: The students will be enlighten their minds and limit their time using Facebook

and to start improving their academic performance.

Teachers: The result of our research study will help the teachers to acknowledge other

students for them to know the bad effects of Facebook and may be able to be aware on

what to do when their students are using Facebook during class hours.

Parents: The parents will know how to guide their children to avoid using Facebook for

them to focused on their studies and to get free from academic purposes.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to the comprehensive literature review by Ellison (2007), the role of

Facebook in higher education is attributed to the creation of virtual classes. The review

has analyzed massive research database around the world to make this review

comprehensive in its coverage for almost all aspects of an endeavor to give an

explanation for the diverse roles of Facebook in higher education classes. Keeping in

touch with family and friends- Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with your

family and friends that live far away. With instant messaging and even video chat,

Facebook is the perfect place to stay connected. With the status updates, photos, and

profile information, it can keep you up to date on the happenings of all of your close

ones.

Making new friends- Facebook makes meeting new people extremely easy due to

the fact that it allows you to add up to thousands of friends, and acts as a social

melting pot of the internet. If you comment on someone’s picture, then someone else

Page 5
but at the same time you got to know when to stop using it and do the most important

things.

Nearly 85 percent of college students log on to Facebook every day according to

“techrunch.com” the social networking site has become an addiction for many. Instead

of students concentrating on their homework or studying for a big test the next day,

they are spending hours looking through pictures, answering their page comments, and

chatting with friends on the site’s instant messenger. Facebook has consumed good

grades and face-to-face communication is in jeopardy. when we are connected online

there is always something to talk about but when we are face to face it’s like there is

nothing to talk about and it’s almost becomes awkward to make conversations with

each out social media. Social media is really coming in between us and our real friends

because we have lost what it means to have a normal conversation with out the social

media. Sometime Facebook it’s taking total control over us and what we have to do.

“Doing my homework is important to me,” Pines says. “But I can’t help getting caught

up in the world of Facebook. it is like there is something about it that can ’t be resisted.

“Social networking sites, specifically Facebook, effects students’ face-to-face patrick,

2010). A day students should spend at least 30-35 minutes surfing Facebook. They

actually surf for only three to four minutes on each visit to be updated, but they

severally visit Facebook a day. Others spend eight hours on the website. Although

students consider Facebook is distracting and consuming a lot of time, they note that

they can’t stop visiting the website because they prefer it and use it to contact family

members and friends, whether or not encounter them each day.

Page 6
With this research, Facebook is found to be characteristically popular among

other social networking sites as well as among students as indicated by its growing user

capacity that has reached over one billion. However, the review has found a mix of

opinions attributed to whether Facebook alongside other social networking platforms

ought to be integrated into learning processes or not. Consequently, this literature

survey has established many reasons for this mix of opinions. Despite many educational

institutions having established infrastructure for the support of Facebook integration

into classroom learning, building an effective integration methodology poses a major

challenge for the researchers to counter.

In fact, many practitioners have not fully embraced this technology due to lack of

proper skills and training in this area. The technological researchers who are in support

the integration of Facebook into the educational setup have a perception that

conversational procedures that ensure maximum interaction as well as a mix of

reflections are made possible through social networking platforms. In the reflection of

the impacts of Facebook networking on students’ performance, Tess (2013) argues that

there is a variety of correlations that exist in the literature. Other studies though find a

significant negative correlation between a student’s performance and use of Facebook

while others find no correlations or weak correlations. Only a few studies come up with

positive correlations though not with high-level significance. Interestingly, the negative

correlations for the Facebook usage and poor academic performance have been

associated with personality traits or other behavioral or psychological aspects rather

than solely with the use of these platforms.

Page 7
According to research by Newman (2013) there is indeed specific impact of social

media on the performance of students in distance education. This research is more

important due to the fact that distance learning is totally dependent on social

networking technologies like Facebook. This study is concerned with the respondents ’

psychology towards using technology for the purposes of education and identification of

suitable tools and technologies to achieve academic goals and objectives. This research

analyses responses of 572 students enrolled to study a postgraduate course in

management. The course delivery and management is online and utilizes information

and communication technologies for this purpose.

According to data gathered from several sources by OnlineEducation.net,

Facebook and Twitter are used to great benefit — sometimes. Students welcome online

engagement and resources; around 75% of student respondents said they'd like to do

some online collaboration for class, in fact.

Students who use Facebook and hit the books simultaneously found their multitasking

led to 20% lower grades than those of their more focused peers. Facebook-using

students also made less money during school from part-time work, putting in around

five hours per week as opposed to 16 hours per week for a typical, unplugged

counterpart.
