Organization: Bharati Vidyapeeth College Of Architecture

Case study: Bharati Vidyapeeth College Of Architecture Network upgrade

Bharati Vidyapeeth College Of Architecture, located in Belapur, Navi Mumbai, with
approximately 70 staff and 2000 students. The college is interested in upgrading the network of
the junior college. There are total three labs each contains 40 systems, one administration
office containing 10 systems and one server room. The lab,s is on first floor. The labs and
office are connected by the switches

Questionaires:
1. Type Topology used in the network
2. Count of routers used in the network / Brand of routers used
3. Count of switch used in the network / Brand of switches used
4. Subnet mask of the network.
5. Types of Cables used in the network.
6. Why use a particular Cable (For ex: If twisted pairs used, then why?)
7. Number of MAC addresses used in the network.
8. Number of Gateways used.
9. Criteria to check network reliability (Ex: Downtime, Failure frequency, Catastrophe)
10. Type of Network used.
11. Cost of maintaining the whole network.
12. How do you troubleshoot DHCP server related issues?
13. What is the Site location?
14. Are there any security safety procedure.
15. OS installed in PCs and the server.

Network Architecture:
Suggestion Plan/Drawbacks of existing Network:

1.It lacks robustness:

If the network’s main switch breaks down, the entire system would become useless. Also, if it
has a bridging device or a central linking server that fails, the entire network would also come
to a standstill. To deal with these problems, the networks should have a powerful computer to
serve as file server to make setting up and maintaining the network easier.
2.Cabling:
Instead of crossover cabling, straight through cabling could be implemented which can reduce
the complexity of the network as given in the figure below. At present, the straight through
cable is much more popular than crossover cable and is widely used. Currently CAT5 cables
are used they can be replaced with CAT6 to achieve greater bandwidth.
3.Use of static IP:
Static IP Address could be a security risk as the IP address is constant. Static IP cannot be
changed once it has been hacked, hence the network is susceptible to continuous attack.
Therefore, it is imperative to put preventive measures in place before obtaining a static IP such
as Internet security suites and router firewalls.
4.Virus or Malware:
On the off chance that even one PC on a system gets contaminated with an infection, there is a
possibility for alternate frameworks to get tainted as well. Infections can spread through the
system effectively.
5.Equipments:
The equipments used in the network are from local different vendors very less information is
available about the devices this can create problem while troubleshooting.
6.Infrastructure:
The labs are not well maintained in every lab there is only AC that is not sufficient for 30
systems in the lab.
7.Smart Routers:
Smart routers can be used instead of the normal router as a smart router provides interaction
with mobile applications as well. For example, apps can change router settings, monitor
network devices, restrict access to certain websites, view network cameras live
