17. Ascorbic acid, C6H8O6, is a weak monoproctic organic acid which is commonly present in
apple juice.

18. (a) When 1.00g of ethane, C2H6 and 0.70g of propene, C3H6, were mixed and burned in excess
oxygen, carbon dioxide and water were obtained.
(i) Write the combustion equation for both ethane and propene. [2 marks]
(ii) From equation in (i), calculate the total mol and volume of carbon dioxide formed from
the mixture of ethane and propene under room temperature and pressure. (Molar volume of gas at

19. Aluminium is one of the most abundant metal on earth. It has relatively low density and
well-known for its ability to resist corrosion due to the phenomenon of passivation. Aluminium is a
good thermal and electrical conductor, having 59% the conductivity of copper, both thermal and
electrical, while having only 30% of copper’s density.
(a) Explain why aluminium has a lower electrical conductivity than copper. [3 marks]
(b) (i) Aluminium passivate to air and water, as it is coated by a layer of aluminium oxide
which is an amphoteric oxide. Define the term “amphoteric oxide”. Write a balanced chemical
equation between the reaction of aluminium oxide with hydrochloric acid and with sodium
hydroxide. [3 marks]
(ii) Explain why aluminium oxide is amphoteric. [2 marks]
(c) Ethanoic acid, CH3COOH is a weak organic acid, commonly used in food industries as
preservative and flavouring. It is one of the organic compound which can dissolve in both organic
solvent and water.
(i) Using suitable diagram, explain what happened to ethanoic acid when dissolve in
organic solvent. Hence calculate the relative molecular mass of ethanoic acid in organic solvent.

(ii) When ethanoic acid dissolve in water, it dissociate partially in water. Ethanoate ion
formed can be illustrated in more than one structure. Draw the resonance structures and resonance
