Chapter 1

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Being adolescent can be extremely lonely. It is not unusual to have a feeling that

there is no one to turn to when problems arise. This is the stage where major decisions

and deep concerns affect the courses of their lives. Most adolescents are pressured to

perform and succeed, which experience severe stress in meeting these expectations.

Senior high school students need professional advice especially in the choice of

their careers. It is in this period where the students are advised to prepare for their

future worthwhile occupations. Choosing the perfect career is one of the most important

and crucial decision a person has to make. This can be one of the measures whether

an individual will be successful in the future or not. At this stage, self – realization, role

try – outs, occupational explorations in schools, and finding the first job is the tentative

step. It is at this stage when the teenager needs guidance in the proper selection of

their desired career. Where, they will arrive at the right decision considering their innate

capacities, educational privilege offered to the students and other resources that society

makes available for them to be more efficient and effective.

Every child has a right to education. For them to learn, grow and develop not just

only physically but also mentally and socially. Having enough knowledge in their

surrounding helps the children to express and share their thoughts and ideas with other

people. Having enough sources for their basic needs may help them to improve their

performance in school and develop what they really want in the near future.
It gives you the right information, needed direction and makes it clear where you

see yourself in the near future. The importance of this is that it makes you aware of your

strength, weakness, skills and knowledge that are required to achieve your goals in the

near future. When choosing a career it is important to know what we want and what we

do not want. It is very challenging to choose a path to take or to pick a course without

knowing what you really want in the future Senior High School Strand are there to share

knowledge and help you to explore your interest, skills and abilities in order to be

successful in life and especially, happy of what you are doing.

Career Preference at early age helps us to grow in daily life. It is very essential

to have a dream job in your mind to strive with your goals and develop your skills.

Planning helps to stay focused and to keep your perspective.

The importance of setting goals in your mind gives you direction in life and

motivating yourself. At such a young age, a student tends to make the wrong choice

because he or she is completely clueless about what they want to pursue. And for some

others, although you may have made an excellent choice at the start, soon they will

begin to realize that they are stuck in the same industry for a long time and that you are

now unable to explore your other interests.

The purpose of this study is to enhance the skills, knowledge and one’s

personality to be future ready and set their goals at early age. It is also to enable

individuals to take advantage of their talents for achieving their goals. It helps to develop

positive attitudes towards study and work. Career Orientation for students helps to

evaluate their own strengths and to build on their own areas for development.
Background of the Study

Most students still don't know what to take in College so that on May 15, 2013,

President Benigno Aquino III implemented a Kto12 curriculum to make the students

ready to the career they will going to take. Some people have agreed and disagreed to

this program. K12 is a development guidance instructor to where the students can

choose a strands and tracks.

Some students and teachers of college disagree with this new curriculum but

others think that this is a good idea and opportunity to prepare their future. Kto12 is a

development guidance instructor to where the students can choose a strands and

tracks. This strands sharpens the student's knowledge, skills and abilities to their

chosen career. Each track give the students an enough time to practice and master the

career they want.

Senior high school students need professional advice especially in the choice of

their careers. It is in this period where the students are advised to prepare for their

future worthwhile occupations. Therefore career guidance is a must. Choosing the

perfect career is one of the most important and crucial decision a person has to make.

This can be one of the measures whether an individual will be successful in the future or

not. At this stage, self – realization, role try – outs, occupational explorations in schools,

and finding the first job is the tentative step. It is at this stage when the teenager needs

guidance in the proper selection of their desired career. Where, they will arrive at the

right decision considering their innate capacities, educational privilege offered to the
students and other resources that society makes available for them to be more efficient

and effective.

Theoretical Framework

According to John Holland (2017), Careers are determined by an interaction

between our personality and the environment in John Holland's Theory of Career

Choice. We want jobs with people like us. John Holland's Theory of Career Choice

(RIASEC) maintains that in choosing a career, people prefer jobs where they can be

around others who are like them. They search for environments that will let them use

their skills and abilities, and express their attitudes and values, while taking on

enjoyable problems and roles. Behaviour is determined by an interaction between

personality and environment.

John Holland's Theory of Career Choice speaks about choosing or making

career preferences with people who is like them, people who have the same

personality, skills and ability. They prefer the jobs with people who can get easily get

along because for them the behaviour is a fundamental of career.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is the fundamental theory of one’s behaviour

including the motivation of doing something. The students’ choice of career may be

attributed to their physiological needs, good and decent meals, shelter for safety,

recognitions and belongingness to the family, intrinsic motivation of self discover and

actualisation. There could be some reasons for some as what Skinner’s Operant

Conditioning described. People behave or do (refrain from doing) things because of

rewards and punishments. Some students could have been forced to take the career

they planned because of fear (negative stimulant).

The chosen career of a students are not all about what they want, sometimes

their prefer decisions is what they need and what other people wants for them to be.

These factors could affect their decision and step to succeed. There’s a lot of factors

that may help or down them in doing their decisions, but having a motivation,

perseverance and focus on what they want or what career they will choose is the best

weapon that they could ever bring.

Piaget's (1936) theory of cognitive development explains how a child constructs a

mental model of the world. He disagreed with the idea that intelligence was a fixed trait,

and regarded cognitive development as a process which occurs due to biological

maturation and interaction with the environment. 7 The cognitive development was a

progressive reorganization of mental processes as a result of biological maturation and

environmental experience.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers conducted this topic in order for the students to have more

knowledge on how effective what career will they choose in the future. It is a research to

help or for the students to know what are the things they are capable at and to learn

new things for them to understand what career will really fit/s to them.

1.) What are the factors that help the students to choose their career?

2.) What are the advantages of Senior High School Strand to the students to their
chosen career?
3.) How do the Senior High School Strand helps the student’s development?
Hypothesis

Alternative Hypothesis. The Student’s impact for choosing their career do not

significantly predict their chosen strand or track.

Null Hypothesis. The Student’s impact for choosing their career would help them

to be ready for their career.

Scope and Delimitations

This study is focused on the career orientation of the Grade 10 students of Liceo

De San Pedro during the school year 2018 - 2019. It is delimited to the knowledge of a

student and in pursuing the career in the near future of the respondents.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study conducted will benefit the following:

Students -This study will benefit the students since most of them are starting to know

what career they want to pursue. Instead of asking themselves what to pursue, career

development programs will help them to emphasize the career they have chosen. On

the overall, the inputs and outputs of this study could be utilized as bases for more

effective students’ recruitment program in various college institutions.

Teachers - It will provide a wide-range of information that can help them to improve

their strategies and methods used in teaching. Likewise, a more responsive support
program/s for graduating students can be organized to maximize resource and satisfy

emerging need to sustain development efforts.

School Administrators - The result of this study will serve as a basis to improve and

develop the curriculum or program. Likewise, public and private high school can

consider a collaborative effort with higher educational institution to sustain the said

effort. Therefore, this can eventually minimize the difficulty of high school students in

choosing their desired career.

Parents - This study will help them to know what their children wants to be in the future

and will help them to motivate and give remarks to the career chosen. Also, parents

were more be aware of the need to know the career preferences of their children and

would have a clear understanding of a career guidance program of the school.

Future Researchers - This study will help them to understand what is the importance

of career and the importance of career development programs. This study can be their

source and can be their guide for the future studies that are similar to this topic.
