 In a study conducted, it was found that women who had a long duration of pre-marital
sex had higher odds of HIV-1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1), HSV-2(Herpes Simplex
Virus) and other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). Moreover, it was also reported
that women who had engaged longer in pre-marital sex are more likely to have had
multiple sexual partners (Ghebremichael & Finkelman, 2013).

on Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and High Risk Behaviors in Women. Journal of
AIDS and HIV research (Online), 5(2), 59–64.

 Most cases of HIV/AIDS are reported at the ages 20 to 34 years old, but it is speculate
that infection started 8 to 10 years ago, as such, infection started when they were
adolescents. The most common means of transmission was found to be through sexual
contact (Earl, 1995).

adolescents. Reexamination of the paradigm of HIV risk reduction in adolescents, 95(12),

 Studies have shown that adolescents who had sex at an earlier age are more likely to
engage with more sexual partners, thus increasing the risk of being exposed to HIV like
having sexual activity with someone who is infected (WHO, 2002).

 In a study, it was identified that HIV/STIs was one of the effects of pre-marital sex.
93% of the respondents from the study agreed that engaging in pre-marital sex can
lead to various STIs. Respondents from the FGD (Focused-group discussion) have
also named some of the diseases that can be accumulated such as herpes, gonorrhea,
and HIV; these diseases are prevalent in students who engaged in unsafe sex. They
also identified that those who engage in group sex and sodomy (anal/oral sex) have
higher risk of HIV (Abdullahi & Umar, 2013).
