Briefly describe the geographic location of your library/school and the

composition of the population you serve.
Blue Ridge is located is a primary rural location. The population it serves has changed to a
more needy population due the the advent of low income housing, patio homes, and
townhouses in the neighborhood.
What is the title of the program for which you are seeking funding?
Sharing the Love of Reading

Is this a new program? Yes: No:

How will this program add to your normal educational activities?

Most of the books that are a part of the library collection are AR books and are checked
out to support that part of the school mission. However, many of the students want to
read other books that are not necessarily AR. This grant would provide additional
books that are geared toward students who want to read as part of being in books
circles where students read together and discuss their books. According to AR data
as of November 8, 2010, Blue Ridge students had read 4,251 books and 37,471,467
words combined. The circulation data reveals that 9,328 books have been checked out
this year.

Structure of Proposed Program

(Describe the curriculum, activities and implementation of program.)
Students get to suggest books that are not currently a part of the media center. For
example, right now the media center only has The Lightning Thief and not the other
books in the series. The students want to be able to continue to read these books and
be part of reading circles where they could get together with their peers who are also
reading a similar book and discuss their book. This would be a reading enrichment
versus curriculum-based program; however, the GPS dictates that students will read
1,000,000 words. Having high-interest, student-centered books would help achieve
this standard. Students will do book talks and create other ways to getting other group
to read their book. The WBRE, the school news program, would highlight these books
and encourage others to read.
