A Study Stretch of the Central Delhi extending from Firosha Kotla till Old Fort
Ist Semester students 2016-18
STUDIO INTENT
The city of Delhi, capital of this vast land of diversities, is a city laden
with layers of history, a place where civilizations have lived, prospered
and perished over centuries. The modern city today, built over and
around a rich tapestry of heritage, presents an opportunity at every
turn, to allow for co-existence of the past, present and the future. In
order to understand this multidimensional urban spectrum and
attempt to plan the future, a stretch of the Central Delhi extending
from Firosha Kotla till Old Fort was studied and the criteria of
selecting the site was the prime connectivity from East Delhi to
Central Delhi and also the major highway linkage to other
neighbouring states.
The studies involve the visual tools for ground studies combined with
extra assistance of Google images, so the report is an outcome of the
series of deliberations of the 1st Semester Landscape Department
(2016-18) and has been prepared on the basis of available data /
information from various secondary sources and primary survey
conducted at the selected site. Based on the analysis of existing
situation, the report has suggested suitable measures so that urban
landscape measures can be adopted while considering the
redevelopment of this stretch.
A preliminary site visit was arranged where a group of students and faculties as
representatives of the class went to the study site to understand the feasibility of carrying out
the studio, in terms of content, permissions and learning.
METHODOLOGY
STAGE II : SITE ANALYSIS
4. Individual design
Udaipur is an example of a situation where considerable development has taken place. Still, lending hope, is the fact that a large periphery
of the lake area is in a position where further development can be done giving precedence to environmental concerns, protection of
environment and encouraging sustainable eco tourism/ development.
The students are expected to acquaint themselves with the complex relationships, issues and ideas relating to large regional open spaces
in suburban/ rural locations. The design idea is to assess open spaces, relate them to the existing and original environmental conditions,
and identify possibilities related to its proposed landscape development.
The selected study area should have a predominance of nature including existing vegetation, drainage systems, geological elements,
original soils etc. The site may have limited areas under agriculture and development. All components constituting that ecological system
will be studied, recorded and analysed to arrive at guidelines for design. The landscape design will be done for a few sites which will be
identified at site, on which students will be required to layout and design a small project according to the given brief.
Sustainability also has to be seen in the context of local culture and local handicraft produce. These will have to be protected because
such activities are in symbiotic relationship with the regional ecology and are a source of income for the local population whose interests
have to be protected if the ecology of the region is to be secured.
STUDIO INTENT
OBJECTIVE
1. The objective is to recognize and identify a number of landscape types in the vicinity of the lake and understand functional
considerations, spatial characteristics, and specific issues concerned with each type.
(Landscape forms part of the structure of Udaipur. Strategically integrated, open space can fulfill a significant role in imparting
distinctiveness to the city’s spatial character, complement urban design and fulfill vital functions related to human activity and
environmental problems.)
1. To study the landscape elements in the context of the regional ecology and the ability of the natural bio-geo-chemical cycles to sustain
themselves while allowing development, including tourism, suitable for that area. This means that the 'development' that takes place
should not create a situation where the natural ecology begins to deteriorate and reaches a stage of irreversibility.
2. To understand the significance, parameters, generic/ site specific design methodology, observation criteria, data collection items and
procedure, design parameters and implications which influence decisions relating to sustainable development.
3. To examine and assess the components of site specific natural environment and analyze the project activities, and design a sustainable
project as per design brief. (Sites shall be decided after reconnaissance at site.)
METHODOLOGY
Scope:
The studio problem shall be done within the following site and time
parameters:
i. Understanding the lake perimeter, areas in immediate vicinity and, if
required in specific situations, the extent upto the ridge line of the lake
catchment area surrounding hills defining the extent of the catchment
area.
ii. Implications of the site being close to an urban conglomeration.
iii. Providing recommendation for the lake area and design suggestions for
typical situations in the vicinity of the lake.
iv. Developing an approach to eco tourism design in relation to the lake site
and location specific area in the vicinity.
Sites:
Landscape design project sites identified on site, on which students designed
a small project according to the given brief.
METHODOLOGY
All groups shall carry out survey and data collection of each area allocated to
them and this shall include (but may not be restricted) to the aspects given
below:
i. Topography
ii. Hydrology - Surface and sub surface hydrological conditions.
iii. Geology and geomorphology
iv. Ecology
v. Climate and micro climate
vi. Water and aquifer related information.
vii. History of the region and the site
viii. Circulation within the site and in its vicinity particulary the access and
entries to the site
ix. Existing and planted vegetation
x. Lake history and transformation.
xi. Landuses - existing and proposed.
xii. Activity patterns – existing and proposed.
xiii. Visual analysis
xiv. Monuments and buildings of historic significance
xv. Community configuration, skills and local crafts.
xvi. Identification of negative factors and the possibility of their amelioration.
xvii. Landscape aspects related to smart city mission.
