ENGINEERING MECHANICS

Definition: a branch of physical sciences concerned with the state of bodies that are under the action of forces.

Branches of mechanics
1) STATICS
-it deals with the bodies in the state of rest or in uniform velocity
2) DYNAMICS/KINETICS
-it deals with the bodies in motion under the action of forces

*FORCE
-Action exerted by one body upon another
 TWO EFFECTS OF FORCE
1. External effect- change in, or tendency to change, the state of motion of the body upon which it
acts
2. Internal effect- produce stress and deformation in the body
 CHARACTERISTICS OF A FORCE
1. Magnitude
2. Position of its line of action
3. The direction in which the force acts along the line of action

PRINCIPLE OF TRANSMISSIBILITY
-states that the external effect of a force on a rigid body is the same for all the points of application along its line of action.

*RIGID BODY
-A definite amount of matter the parts of which are fixed in position relative to one another
*MASS
-Invariant property of a body which measures its resistance to a change of motion

System Units
QUANTITIES SYSTEM INTERNATIONAL IMPERIAL SYSTEM
1. Length meter-m foot
2. Mass Kilogram- kg slugs
3. Time second-s second-s
4. Force Newton-N pound-lb

Conversion of Units
FPS SI
Force 1 lb = 4.4482 N
Mass 1 slug = 14.5938 kg
Length 1 ft = 0.3048 m

Scalar and vector

Scalar- quantities that can be expressed by magnitude only
Example: Area Length
Moment of inertia Mass
Power
Vector- quantities that can be expressed by both magnitude and direction
Example: Velocity Accelaration
Force Moment
Displacement

FREE BODY DIAGRAM

-it is the isolated view of a body which shows only the external forces exerted on the body

Force system
- any arrangement where two or more forces act on a body or on a group of related bodies.

Problems:
1. Determine the X and Y components of each of the forces shown in the figure below.

2. The body on the incline in the figure is subjected to the vertical and horizontal forces shown. Find the
components of each force along X-Y axes oriented parallel and perpendicular to the incline.

3. Determine the components of each force along X-Y axes which are parallel and perpendicular to the incline.
4.The body shown below is acted upon by four forces. Determine the resultant and its location.

5.The force system shown below has a resultant of 200 lb pointing up along the y axis. Compute the value of force F
and the angle 𝜽 required for this given resultant.

5.The block shown is acted on its own weight w=140 lb, a horizontal force F=600lb, and the pressure P exerted by
the inclined plane. The resultant R of these forces is parallel to the inclined. Determine the value P and R.

6. It is required that the resultant force acting on the eyebolt in figure be directed along the positive x axis and that F2 have a
minimum magnitude. Determine this magnitude, the angle u, and the corresponding resultant force.
