Electronics & Nanotechnology (BEng/MEng)
(Subject to Approval)

The world has been transformed by the power of silicon

microelectronic technology. Communications, transport, science,
medicine and entertainment are just some of the fields that have
benefited. The milestone of one billion transistors on a chip was
recently reached and such chips are already in use in consumer
products such as digital cameras, phones and MP3 players. And yet,
nanotechnologies such as carbon nanotubes, molecular self-assembly
and bio-molecular electronics, and new paradigms such as quantum
computing and spintronics are set to fuel another great revolution in
electronics technology.

This unique and exciting course is focussed directly on this interface Why study Electronics and Nanotechnology
between the fields of electronics and nanotechnology. It covers the
foundations of electronic engineering, from communications systems,

through to computer engineering, integrated circuit design and • The course draws on the world-leading nano-electronics research
micro/nano fabrication. It will enable students to understand the expertise in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. In the
principles of electronics and nanotechnology, in particular the most recent UK government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE),
principles of the fabrication and design of modern microelectronic Leeds was one of only five Electronic and Electrical Engineering
products. Schools to be awarded the highest 5* award for research excellence.
• You will have access to multi-million pound research and experimental
facilities including molecular electronics, embedded systems and
experimental electronics laboratories, a nanotechnology cleanroom
and molecular beam epitaxy.
• We have first class learning and teaching facilities including state-of-
the-art project laboratories, lecture theatres and computer clusters,
along with quiet study areas and free wireless internet access.
• Opportunities for work experience exist through our Industrial
Placement Scheme and International Corporate Leadership
programme.
• Our strong links with employers, ensures that our graduates are highly
regarded and sought after. The broad coverage of electronics keeps a
wide range of options open, whilst the unique nanotechnology
exposure means graduates can seek top flight jobs in micro- and
nano-electronic design, semiconductor fabrication and in academic
research.
