ELT SYSTEMS SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER
1. SUBJECT: ARTEX ELT Maintenance and Testing ACR Electronics, Inc.

2. SUMMARY: ACR Electronics, Inc. is continually monitoring the serviceability of its products. Data
feedback from fielded units has illuminated the possible lack of inspection and functional checks as
required on an annual basis. This service advisory is intended to reiterate the requirement of an
annual inspection of the ELT and to provide a written advisement on the applicable procedures.

3. MODELS AFFECTED BY THIS NOTICE: ARTEX Branded ELT Systems

4. APPLICABILITY: All ELT Systems

5. REFERENCES: All ELT IMM, CFR 91.207, CAR 571 Appendix G

6. BACKGROUND: ELT maintenance is an obligation of Section 91.207 of the Code of Federal

Regulations for Aviation Operations that requires all Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) to be
inspected annually for:
1. Proper installation
2. Battery corrosion
3. Operation of the controls and crash sensor
4. The presence of a sufficient signal radiated from its antenna

ACR Electronics, Inc. reminds all operators who have installed the ARTEX ELT product line to inspect their
ELTs in accordance with the FAA regulations referenced above.

7. ACTION:
7.1. ELT Testing
The inspection for the operation of the controls and crash sensor includes what is commonly
referred to as the “football test”. Install the G-switch loop (Applicable P/N per the ELT Service
and Install Manual) and 50 ohm load installed and perform test. This test is performed by
activating the ELT by using a rapid forward (i.e., throwing) motion in the direction of the arrow
on the ELT label, followed by a rapid reversing action.

NOTE: If the throwing motion does not activate the ELT after 2 throws, then the ELT must be sent to an
ARTEX authorized service center for evaluation.

7.2. Helicopter Model Additional Testing
Keep G-switch loop (Applicable P/N per the ELT Service and install Manual) and 50 ohm load
installed and perform the test. This test of the five module switches can be accomplished by
thrusting the Unit Under Test (UUT) into a piece of foam padding or cushion of office/shop chair
in the five different directions specified on the label. Verify in each case that the UUT activates
via G-switch closure as indicated by the LED flashing. Reset the UUT after each activation by
toggling the ON/OFF switch ON and then OFF.

NOTE: If after two attempts in each direction the ELT does not activate, then the ELT must be sent to
an ARTEX authorized service center for evaluation.

Please be aware that the ELT under test will transmit a live 406 MHz burst 50 seconds after activation.
The ELT MUST be recycled (stopped from further activation) inside 50 seconds and before a live burst
can be transmitted.
