 Chiapas Red Kidney
2008 was an exciting year for farmers,
De Morges Braun Peacevine foodies, and food activists here in BC, as well
as across Canada. Interest and support for local
and organic food production continues to grow,
as does analysis about the fundamental flaws in
the industrial agriculture system, characterized
by an overdependence on fossil fuels and
reliance on off-farm inputs such as fertilizers,
pesticides and genetically modified seeds.
This system is driven by corporate interests
concerned more with maximizing profits than
delivering healthy, nutritious food. Canadians
are saying, “Enough!”, and looking for food
that has been grown locally and organically,
or transformed by processors and artisans into
a product that is unique, tasty, nutritious and
notably different than mass-produced foods
from the global marketplace.
At the same time, the past year has been one
Rossa di Milano of troubled times in terms of food security for
many around the globe. Food riots have erupted
as staples like wheat, rice and corn have more
than doubled in price. While Canadians may
not be as dramatically affected as people from
less wealthy countries, the lesson that access to
healthy food cannot be taken for granted has
not been lost. Canadians have responded with
renewed interest and commitment to growing
more of their own food, starting or expanding
home gardens and sourcing seeds from small
and independent seed companies like ours.

Last year saw the opening of the Svalbard
global seed vault, a repository intended for
the seeds of as many of the worlds food crops
as possible. Yet the only reason such a vault
is needed is because of the relentless global
advance of an industrial agricultural system
that devalues and displaces local, traditional
seed and crop varieties with seeds that have
preference in the globalized marketplace.
In light of this it is more important than
ever that local communities, in Canada and
abroad, nurture community-based seedsaving
networks and continue the in situ conservation
of our seed heritage through on-farm
seedsaving practices by farmers around the
world. Stellar Seeds is glad to be a part of this in
British Columbia.
My partner, Colleen O’Brien, and I grow our
seeds as part of a diversified organic farm. In
collaboration with others, the farm supports
market vegetable production, animals,
perennial crops, educational outreach and
several farm-based businesses. Diversity is a
central tenet for us and key to our decision to
specialize in heritage and rare seed varieties.
We also work with other organic farmers in BC
to bring you a wider variety of seeds than can
be produced on one single farm. Thank you for

BASIL Italian Large Leaf
Ocimum basilicum - The classic large-leaf
basil from Italy, excellent for making pesto
but also used fresh or dried for other culinary
uses. Grows 40-50cm tall with excellent
flavour and aroma.

BASIL Thai
Ocimum sp. - This dwarf basil grows about
20-25cm high with small, strong-scented
green leaves and purple stalks and flowers.
Leaves have scent of cloves and anise seed
and are particularly suited to Thai curry

CHERVIL Brussels Winter
Anthriscus cerefolium - Improved strain that is
larger, slower to bolt, and vigorous growing.
The leaves of this plant are used much like
parsley to flavour soups, stews, sauces and
salads. Leaves are dark green and lacy with a
mild anise flavour. Particularly excellent as an
additon to fresh salads.

CHIVES
Allium schoenoprasum - This early growing
spring green helps refresh the palette after
a long winter without fresh-picked garden
goodies. Delicate onion flavour is excellent
addition to soups, salads, egg and cheese
dishes. Also repels insects and can be used
for companion planting. Great in pots or in
the ground. Edible purple flowers.

CILANTRO Santo
Coriandrum sativum - Select strain that
is noted for being fast growing, but
exceptionally slow-bolting. Good for spring
and summer plantings where bolt-resistance
important. Broad, bright green leaves and
upright growth habit make harvesting easier.

DILL Fernleaf
Anethum graveolens - This unique dwarf dill
grows only 60cm tall and begins branching
from the base. The finely cut foliage gives
it its name, and it is noted for being slow to
bolt and an excellent variety for drying.

DILL Mammoth
Fresh cut foliage is excellent in salads and
other dishes. Can be allowed to go to seed
with umbels used for dilling pickles, or dried
seeds harvested for culinary use. Grows to

LOVAGE
Levisticum officinale - Vigorous, tall-growing
perennial herb with strongly flavoured leaves
reminiscent of celery. Certified Organic
PARSLEY Moss Curled
Petroselinum crispum - This triple-curled
parsley has extremely fine cut leaves that are
dark green in colour, and very tightly curled.
This is a widely adapted cultivar that grows
vigorously and has become the standard
for curled parsleys. With excellent flavour
these compact plants grow 20cm tall, 20cm

PARSLEY Italian
Large plants grow 20cm high and 40cm
around. Dark green, flat, glossy leaves with
rich flavour. Best parsley for drying because
of stronger flavour.

Satureja hortensis - Annual herb whose fresh
or dried leaves are rubbed on meats or used
as a garnish for soups, stews, bean dishes,
and more. Flavour is reminiscent of tarragon.

Beurre de Rocquencourt
Bush bean. This French heirloom wax
bean produces prolific amounts of slender,
12cm-long golden yellow beans on compact,
upright plants. Pods are round-oval,
stringless and very flavourful. These vigorous
plants are resistant to cold and wet growing
conditions in the beginning of the season.

Bush bean. Fantastic snap bean with light
green pods, great flavour and heavy yields.
12cm long, stringless pods that are perfect
for fresh eating or freezing. Empress will

Dragon Tongue
Bush bean. This heavy yielding variety
of yellow wax bean is one of the sweetest
beans we have ever grown. Extremely juicy
and tender, it makes for wonderful fresh
eating, try eating it raw as part of a veggie
platter. Slightly flat, light yellow pods with
purple stripes grow 20-25cm long. Extremely
vigorous plant loaded with beans.

Bush bean. This elegant french filet variety
has dark green, slender, extra-long stringless
pods that are firm-textured and tender. High
yields on sturdy, erect plants. Our favourite
snap bean, it is wonderful for home or market.

Bush bean. This rare, heirloom yellow snap
bean produces slim, golden beans on 45cm
tall, sturdy plants. Good yields and good
flavour, texture is fleshy and succulent.

Broad Windsor Fava
Vicia faba - 1m tall plants produce 20cm long,
glossy green pods with 5-7 large, tasty beans
inside. Picked fresh they can be eaten raw or
quickly steamed and provide a high protein
addition to light summer meals. A gourmet
palate will appreciate the fine flavour of favas
- fresh, frozen or dried. Certified Organic
Hokkaido Black Edemame Soybean
Glycine max - Picked when the seeds are
just starting to plump the pods these
thin-skinned soybeans are delicious and
nutritious - packed with protein. Steam the
fresh green pods for five minutes, run under
cold water, season with salt, and squeeze the
beans out to eat. Also good for freezing or as

Chiapas Red Kidney
Bush bean. An excellent bean first gifted
to us by local farmer Doug Saba from his
travels in Mexico. Dual purpose bean is
fine-textured, stringless and sweet for
eating as a snap bean but can be left to dry
down and harvested for the tasty, small red
kidney beans inside - an excellent staple
in your winter pantry. Pods are 10-12cm
long, straight, and an attractive light green

Early Wonder Tall Top
Early maturing root, semi-globe shaped,
smooth-skinned, growing to about 9cm
diameter. Dark red skin with deep red flesh.
Tops are tall, bright glossy green and fast
growing - excellent for bunching and beet

Red Acre
Globe-shaped, deep purple-red heads
that can weigh 1-2 kilos. A short-stemmed
compact plant that is noted for holding well
in the garden without splitting. Tight and

CAPE GOOSEBERRY
Physalis peruviana

Giant
Large, golden-orange fruits hang from the
branches of this waist-high plant. Encased
in a papery husk these fruits need a long
season to mature and a good degree of
heat. Every bit worth the effort to grow, the
complex, tropical taste is unlike anything
else we can grow in Canada. In a milder
climate these plants can perennialize and

Poha
These upright, branching plants grow 80cm tall
and 50cm around. Hanging from the branches
are small husked fruits with an incredibly
sweet, yet tangy flavour that is the closest
thing to tropical fruit we can grow in Canada.
Fruits grow 2-3cm in diameter and are ready for
harvest when husks have dried down and fruits
turn bright orange in colour. All the rage in

CARROTS Daucus carota

Dragon
Much sought-after carrot with purple-red
skin that contrasts beautifully with deep
orange flesh. Some carrots have yellow core
as well! Sweet flavour with a hint of spice.

Long Orange Improved
This rare, heritage variety is an improved
version of an old Dutch imperator type
from the early 17th century. With long,
straight, tapering, deep orange roots and
fantastic flavour, we think growers will find it
appealing for home-eating and for market.
Grows 5cm round at the shoulder, 25cm long
and tapers to a point. Sturdy tops make for
great bunching. Keeps well, excellent storage
variety when full-grown. Deeper orange

Nantes Coreless
High quality carrot that is excellent for home
or market growing. Orange roots are 5cm at
shoulder, taper to a blunt tip and grow 20cm
long. Strong tops make for easy picking
and good bunching. Sweet, with full carrot
flavour - a customer favourite at our market

GREENS
Amaranth Mercado
Amaranthus spp. - This ancient grain hailing
from the Mexican highlands today plays an
important part in diets across the world.
The nutrient-rich young leaves are used like
spinach, eaten in stews, soups, salads or
braised. The seeds, once matured and dried
are an excellent source of protein and are
eaten toasted, sprouted, boiled, popped and
ground into flour in many different culinary
traditions around the world. Flowerheads are
also a striking ornamental.

Amaranth Hopi Red Dye
Brilliant red stalks and leaves of this plant are
an eye-catching component of any garden.
Young leaves are particularly nutritious and
make an excellent addition to salad mixes
- leaves can be steamed like spinach as well.

Arugula
Eruca sativa - This popular southern European
leaf has become well-loved in North America,
particularly as an addition to salad mixes. The
distinct pepper flavour works well in many
dishes. Grows quickly, ready to harvest in 3-4
weeks. Ideal for cut-and-come-again culture.

Wild Italian Arugula
Diplotaxis muralis aka Arugula selvatica - This
plant is slightly smaller than regular arugula,
the leaves more heavily cut, with classic
arugula taste and a deeper, earthier flavour.
Thrives in cool temperatures and tolerates
heat; slower growing than arugula, and
also slower bolting. Perennial in zones 7-10.

Broadleaf Cress
Lepidium sativum - Quick growing plant has
leaves that grow about 7cm long and 2cm
wide. Roughly oval in shape, the leaves are
slightly lobed and wavy making for a visually
interesting addition to salads. Leaves can be
harvested repeatedly and have a slight bite
similiar to mustards.

Curly Cress
Lepidium sativum - Small, finely cut leaves
with frilled edges and curly nature resemble
parsley but have a distinctly peppery bite.

Mizuna
Brassica juncea - Mild flavoured popular
Japanese mustard green. Attractive, deeply
serrated, feathery green leaves with slender
white ribs are eaten fresh in gourmet salad

by staggering plantings you can enjoy it all
season long. Extremely cold hardy it will live
well into late autumn.

Golden Purslane
Portulaca oleracea - Improved cultivated
purslane varietal with upright growth
habit for ease of picking. Leaves are
large, medium-green with golden tinge,
contrasting nicely with reddish stems. Mild

Red Orach
Atriplex hortensis - Non-traditional plant that
is gaining popularity in gardens for its mild,
flavourful and tender leaves that are a great
addition to salads or can be steamed and
sauteed as well. Deep red leaves borders on
purple, with a green-tinged underside. Easy-
to-grow plant that can eventually reach 2m
tall. Self-supporting. Certified Organic

Brassica rapa - The glossy, deep dark green,
spoon-shaped leaves of this plant have
an attractive shape. Flavour is mild and
nutty with a hint of mustard. Plants grow
30cm high and form a rosette about 50cm

repeatedly. Excellent raw or cooked – salad
mix and stirfry staple.

This mesclun mix has both mild
and zesty flavours. Partnered are

Aunt Molly’s
Also called husk tomato these delicious
edibles grow 1-2cm in diameter. The papery
husks around the fruit turn brownish when
ripe, and the yellow-orange fruits drop to
the ground, awaiting hungry gardeners
like some well-wrapped treasure. Sweet-
tart, slightly citrus flavour is addictive and
habit forming ... we mean that in the best
possible way. Low growing bush 60cm wide
and 40cm tall with loads and loads of fruit.

Cossack Pineapple
Similiar size and growth habit to Aunt Molly’s
but with overtones of pineapple flavour.
Said to be originally from Eastern Europe
and used to achieve pineapple flavour in
preserves and dishes. Most Canadians
simply eat them out-of-hand as a wonderful

Unique bronze-red romaine leaves form
tall, elongated heads with cream coloured
hearts. Leaves are crisp, juicy and flavourful.

Another great romaine variety. Full, large
heads that are compact and tightly wrapped
by lightly savoyed outer leaves, very similiar
to Cosmo. Leaves are a medium-green, and
wonderfully crisp - there is no mint flavour

originally hails from Europe. Granny Smith

Drunken Woman
Tender, semi-heading looseleaf variety with
light to bright green leaves spotted with
red. One of our largest lettuces, very slow to
bolt, great taste and appearance. Customer

Freckles
aka Forellenschluss, Trout’s Back, this
attractive green romaine lettuce is flecked
with red/maroon spots, making for a
beautiful  presentation in salads. The tender,
crunchy, sweet leaves have excellent flavour
and the mid-rib is not tough. One of our best.

Our favourite greenleaf we grew this year.
Compact plants grow 25cm around and
are a pleasing, vibrant green colour with
uniformly shaped oakleaf leaves. Heads can
be picked whole or leaves picked individually

surrounded by out-turned leaves, 40cm tall

Large, red oak-leaf shaped leaves form a full
rosette on this mild non-bitter lettuce. Slow-
bolting lettuce grows well all season.

Unbelievably deep red colour that is almost
purple, this eye-catching looseleaf was a
mainstay of our market lettuces this year.
Tender, sweet leaves are slightly savoyed and
heads grow large, with only a little green at
the core. Highly recommended!

Revelation
A lolla rossa type with slightly less tightly
curled leaves than other lolla rossa types
and an intense purple-red colour. Medium
to large heads have no equal in colour and
make an eye-catching addition to salads or

One of the most beautiful looseleaf lettuces
we have grown. The bright, vivid-green
leaves of this large lettuce are tipped with
red; the semi-heading centre of this lettuce
surrounded by large, wavy leaves. Great

method, or as a single lettuce head. Perfect

Rouge d’Hiver
An excellent red-leafed romaine lettuce that
produces large, upright heads, dark red on
the outside with a lighter coloured, greenish
inside and green heart. Each head has lots
of colour blending that looks great in salads.

Absolutely gorgeous heirloom butterhead
lettuce from a peasant family in Yugoslavia.
Introduced to North America in 1987.
Predominantly dark red heads have cream/
green/red interior and are tender, succulent

Bedfordshire Champion
Back by popular demand, this customer
favourite produces heavy yields of large,
round, 12-15cm diameter, yellow-copper
skinned onions. Excellent storage onion

Rossa di Milano
One of the most beautiful onions we’ve
ever grown! Large, heavy-yielding, 10-15cm
diameter, red-skinned, flat-topped onion

GREEN ONIONS Allium fistulosum
He-Shi-Ko
Also called scallions or bunching onions
these tall (40cm) green-stalked, white-
rooted onions are perfect for cutting into
soups, salads, etc. Very space efficient in
small gardens. Left in the ground this cultivar
becomes perennial, offering the earliest
spring greens for gardeners to harvest.

PEAS Pisum sativum

Carouby de Mausanne
Fantastic heirloom French snow pea with
large, flat, very sweet, juicy pods. Stringless
and crunchy, they are excellent eaten out-
of-hand or in salads or stirfrys. Gorgeous
bi-colour pink and purple flowers are almost
ornamental. Vines grow to 1.5m high and

Super Sugar Snap
An improved, earlier maturing variety of
the popular Sugar Snap, with plumper pods
and increased yield potential. Produces
double pods at each flowering node. The
vigorous vines of this cultivar can reach 2m

the long, slender pods are excellent fresh or
frozen. Highly recommended.

This heirloom shelling pea was introduced
in 1846 and in 1884 one authority considered
it “unsurpassed in flavour and sweetness”.
Over 100 years later English gardeners still

The long, pointed pods of this shelling pea
reach 10-12cm. Vines grow to about 75cm
tall, and each pod contains about 8-10 tasty
peas. A popular main crop variety, this pea
delivers high yields trellised or left to ramble.

Slightly earlier than Green Arrow, the 8cm
long pods contain plump, very sweet,
dark green peas that are excellent fresh or
frozen. This shelling variety is noted for its

Belstar Super
These long, black-skinned, white-fleshed
roots are eaten boiled, steamed, baked or in
soups and stews. Much loved by Europeans
the creamy white flesh and delicious, earthy
flavour are catching on in Canadian foodie
circles. This large variety is free of side-
roots, vigorous growing and early maturing.

SQUASH, winter
Red Kuri
C. maxima - This smaller-sized squash, part
of the hubbard group, has bright reddish-
orange skin and grows to 2-4 kilos in weight.
The thick, dense, fine-grained yellow-orange
flesh is considered one of the sweetest
and tastiest by many a squash-eating fan.
Excellent keeper and high yielding. Also

This mid-season tomato plant bears large,

Large, red fruits with a black-purple tinge.
Attractive, prolific and very tasty, this should
be popular with home gardeners for its fine
flavour, and with market gardeners for its

Black Zebra
This mid-sized tomato, completely round
in shape, with a diameter of about 5-6cm,
has red skin striped with streaks of dark
green-black. Similiar to the popular Tiger
Stripe tomato, but with the characteristic
“black” colouration of Russian and Central
Asian tomatoes, as well as the distinct smoky

Heavy producer of large cherry tomatoes,
mostly red in colour with brown, earthy hues.

Czech’s Excellent Yellow
The best yellow tomato we have grown
- bears 5cm round fruits, borne in clusters of
six to eight. Taste is pleasant and low-acid,
much more flavourful than most yellow
tomatoes. Bears prolifically and early.

The perfect beefsteak? Bulgarian heirloom
tomato with excellent flavour. Deep red
colour, fruits grow 10-12cm round, and plant

A vigorous growing and heavy-bearing
yellow cherry tomato, passed on to us from
one of our customers on Vancouver Island.
3cm diameter fruits have a sweet flavour and

Grahams Good Keeper
Another great tasting tomato introduced
to us by one of our customers, this heavy
yielding, extremely vigorous tomato pumps
out loads of medium-sized bright red fruits
that can by used as a paste tomato or an all-
purpose tomato for slicing and eating out of

Consistently the earliest maturing tomato
in our gardens, by almost two weeks!
Determinate vines produce high yields of
small to mid-size (5cm diameter) bright red
fruit with great taste and texture.

Rudbeckia hirta - This domesticated cousin to the popular
wildflower is Stellar Seeds own cross giving you a wide range
of size and colour. From large, golden yellow petals to smaller

Digitalis purpurea - Traditional English cottage garden flower.
Stalks grow 1.5m high with tubular flowers ascending to a
pointed crest. Flowers will range in colour from whites to shades
