 The Remarkable
Teddie-Joy Remhild
Ability Anyware Digital Quarterly was
saddened to find out that Teddie-Joy
Remhild passed away recently. Ms.
Remhild was a blind mother, former
program director, educator, disability
rights activist, prodigious writer, and
motivational speaker for the disability
community. She had a great sense
of enthusiasm, positive outlook on life,
and profound determination in
advocating on behalf of individuals
with disabilities. With her superb
communication and needs
assessment skills, she effectively
addressed the concerns and resource
deprivation in the disability
community. Her name appeared
frequently in numerous records of
disability commission meetings and
disability rights publications. For more
information about Mrs. Remhild and

Council of the Blind.
Teddie-Joy served more than 40 years in the
disability advocacy field. She will be deeply
missed. We thank her for being such a terrific
mentor, compassionate soul, and extraordinary
human being.

advocates for the rights of
persons with disabilities. Their
work brings about greater
inclusion and recognition of the
talent of individuals with
disabilities. Disability advocacy
influencers shape language,
attitudes, and policies toward the
disability community, and impact
how businesses promote their
products and services.

BetaNYC Hosts #Mobility4All
Hackathon on National Civic Day
of Hacking

to correct reported problems.

They proposed gathering data based on
questions like these:
1. How often breakdowns
happened?
2. How quickly was this information
relayed to customers?
3. What if anything was happening to
prevent malfunctions from
happening so often?
Panel members identified stations with the
most reported elevator entrapments and
recommended designing solutions based on
data findings. Wheelchair users cannot
experience a smooth and accessible ride if
their suggestions for improving public
transportation are not included in the
completion of accessibility upgrades.

Digital Literacy
What is digital literacy? How can one
acquire it? When do we need it?
Digital literacyis the ability to understand/
use digital devices and interpret digital
content.
Digital literacy is required on a daily basis
for tasks such as communication, work
related activities, school assignments,
shopping, travel, recreation. Digital literacy
can fill a communication gap for individuals
with physical challenges speaking or
articulating words.
Digitability provides specialized training/
lessons to help adolescents develop
their digital literacy, life and work-ready
skills. They have different modules
understanding the Internet, safety, daily
activities, education, and professional
development, and financial literacy.
UCLA, a Pathway of Study for Students with
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
UCLA Extension offers a variety of courses for
adults with diverse interests. This includes
Pathway, a specialized curriculum for students
with intellectual and developmental
disabilities. "Pathway at UCLA Extension is a
two-year certificate program for students with
intellectual and other developmental
disabilities, offering a blend of educational,
social, and vocational experiences, taught
and supervised by experienced

instructors sensitive to the individual needs of
our students. On campus, Pathway students
attend classes and participate with UCLA
students in the many social, recreational, and
cultural activities of a major university."

disabilities calls for greater safety training.
Programs like Project GET SAFE in hospitals,
schools, day treatment programs, and
residential facilities help reduce safety risks
and protect the vulnerable segment of our
population. This includes individuals with
disabilities, children, and seniors. Please visit

Common shortage of staff in hospitals,
residential facilities, and day programs can
lead to insufficient monitoring during
moments that are critical to personal safety.
Furthermore, individuals with disabilities have
challenges reporting abuse, neglect, or
danger. Assistive technology is a safeguard
and can be ubiquitous when humans are not.
