CHAPTER I

The Problem

INTRODUCTION

The widespread use of Communication and Information

Technology (ICT) influence all fields in life, one of which is

education. Countries see ICT as potential tools for change and

innovation in education (Eurydice, 2001; Papanastasiou & Angeli,

2008) thus, make investments in ICT. The use of media forms

helps the learners and teachers in terms of educational programs

or activities. Students today are computer literate but some may

have issues in using computers. In today’s time, technology

equipment is necessary in order to complete important documents.

European union has been preparing to makeshift to information-

based economy and community and develop digital literacy

(commission of European Communities,2000).

Popular media such as TV, movies and etc., has been already

used as way of teaching method of the teachers in some schools

that has the availability of these equipment. These may help

regain the interest of the students in learning and at the same

time coping up with the level of education around the world.

Schools and universities all over the Philippines are now likely

to use technology in the classroom for a purpose to enhancing

the learning activities in the classroom. The excitement of

student involving these technologies as part of their learning

can also cause disruptions inside the classroom that being

considered as negative consequences managing the problem should

be included an part of the curriculum and concerned school

faculty and staff may take efforts on how these technologies

being used as a tool to achieve the desired learning environment

(Virginia Gorra et., al.).

Therefore, educational sectors nowadays are focused in

investing to the innovation of the education for them to produce

well educated person that may help shape the future. Some schools

are given the flexibility to innovate and develop their own

style of education based on the needs of students and demand of

instructional materials that may suit to the learning

environment of the students.

As researchers, we saw the growth and development of the

students in their studies specially here in Pres. Quirino

Treasured Child School Inc. where are some of the technologies

are already present in the school. in which we believe that the

technology gave them the opportunity of having the conducive

learning environment and also the opportunity to enhance their

learning capabilities. Thus, we chose to conduct this study

which will give us more information about technology in student

learning.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the use of technology to students.

Specifically, it answers the following questions:

1. What are the different technology used by the students in

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

ICT

According to Babalola (2007) to determine the effectiveness

of video and comparison with selected instructional media for

teaching primary school pupils and rural children in Africa and

agriculture and environmental sciences. Thus, the effect of

gender and grade on the performance of the pupils taught with

four instructional media 240 pupils from 3 rural primary school

in Badagry local Government Area of Lagos state, Nigeria were

taught three topics drawn from agriculture and environmental

sciences. The rebuild that the pupils taught with the video

performed equally as well as those taught real objects while

both groups perform significantly done those taught and without

instructional medium. There was no significant difference

performance based on the gender, only the group without

instructional medium had a significant difference. The study

conclude that videos are more than effective than traditional

teacher in teaching primary school children agriculture and

environmental issues this confirms that the assertion of many

researchers of the potential of using video as a medium of

instruction in teaching varying subjects to adults, youths and

children in the formal school system. Based on the findings of

this study it is concluded that the use of video in teaching

primary school pupils are as effective as when the teacher uses

the real objects in teaching agricultural and environmental

sciences. The use of media as instructional materials is more

effective than the use of charts and when no instructional media

is used.

Promoting of using computers in the classroom is more

effective and it can gain more knowledge and develop the ability

of learners and using computers in the classroom has proven

advantageous is more than one respect. But according to Frizzler

(1995) that even though they will never replace teachers. The

findings revealed that the majority of the student reported

being fairly proficient to proficient in computer, skill such

as the deleting files (81. 43%), formatting a floppy disk

(67.15%) copying files (78.57%) and installing a program on a

hard disk (64.29%), while most are reported being not or a little

proficient in computer skill such as using images from a

camcorder or digital camera and computers (84.76%), using

PowerPoint (80%), and creating data bases (78.09%), the results

further revealed no significant effect for year of study on

student’s perception on computer literacy. Despite the benefits

of using the computer in language teaching and learning, there

has been a shortage it is use in Jordanian classroom. Jordan

has implemented educational reform measures to improve the

quality of education, computerized schools, modernized curricula

and teaching methods, enhance teaching and learning processes

to ensure equal access for the poor in regards to basic education

among the learners. Despite these findings, research suggest a

correlation between changes in preservice teachers’ perception

and classroom technology use. Lot of researcher has been

conducted on the effect of computer use on various aspects of

the educational process on how they use. However, although the

literature emphasizes the strong relationship between the user’s

proficiency in and attitudes towards using the computers, it has

little research, the user’s perception of their computer

literacy and the obstacles that face them, especially in third

world countries. The present researchers urge fellow researchers

to conduct further research on the students and teachers need

for and attitudes towards the use of computer for educational

purposes, on the effect of the usage of computer on teaching-

learning the various skills, on contextualizing- providing a

cultural context for foreign language learning- on promoting

learner autonomy and independent learning, and on developing

students to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving

abilities with the help of computers.

According to Ruba fahmi et,al.(2006) teacher’s influence

in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT)

at schools, such as years of experience, gender the duration of

computer and internet use and to determine the level of knowledge

the most commonly used and well-known ICT types among teachers

are the internet, email and etc. attitude towards computer and

the internet are generally positive ICT has potential tools for

change and innovation in education. Turkey spent about $400 per

person, and allocated 11.7% of its budget to ICT however this

rate is lower than those of Europe and central Asia, Turkish

ministry of national education make attempts to disseminate ICT

at school as other countries one of the factors that determine

educational development and innovation in general is teachers

as they are the ones to use the ICT investments for educational

development.

Effectiveness of e-learning in learning

According to Hamiclen hakimiet teaching means a purposely

and perplanned activity whose aim to provide opportunities to

facilitates and speed up the learning within learning and

developing system. Learning is a process to achieve knowledge,

skill and ability to make decision and performance that

ultimately lead to a change into a behaviour. E-learning method

has more independence. Some experts believe in learning. Learner

autonomy and self determination are important. They also believe

in believe that education and distance learning desire from

technological teacher and student separation, where learner

frees from restriction of movement and travel and inflexible

scheduling.

According to the studies carried out, of the benefits of e-

Effective learning

(Schather et al.2004, cited in Afshari et al, 2009)

Reported that when technology is introduced into teacher

education programs, the emphasis is often on teaching about

technology instead of teaching with teaching technology. Hence,

inadequate preparation to use technology is one of the reasons

that teachers do not systematically use computers in their

classes. Teachers lack the necessary skills and thus need to be

given opportunities to practice using information communication

technology during their teachers training programs so that they

can see ways in which technology van be used to augment their

classroom activities. Teachers are more likely to adopt and

integrate ICT in their courses, when professional training in

the use of ICT provides them time to practice with the technology

and to learn, share and collaborate with colleagues. The student

suggests that training teachers to update their ICT skills may

aid the integration of computers into the classroom setting. To

promote ICT integration of in the school, school leaders should

adopt strategies that make ICT part of their daily routine or

tasks of the leaders. These strategies may include using e-mail

as the mode of communication among staff, accessing the internet

to

download data and using s word processor to complete lesson

(UNESCO 2005) Reported that teachers, professors, technical

and administrative staff must be given training that enables

them to integrate new information and communication technologies

into their teaching programs. The lack of technical skills of

maintaining the functionality of computers confused teachers

integrate ICT in the classroom.

(Reid 2013) Studied on quality assurance, open and distance

learning and Australian universities. They found that determined

online interactors moved through different phases of their

online learning experience, and their needs changed at each

stage. Furthermore, considering educational leaders were

responsible for the quality of online programs and instruction

they also needed to engage in professional development, and

experiment with online learning environments, infrastructures

and technologies.

Kinds of learning

(Gardner 1993) Suggested that there are number of different

intelligences which different learners possess in different

amounts. According to him, teaching should be geared to

student’s specific intelligence. The students learning styles

should be first measured and when adopt teaching to the

individual preferences of the students.

(Garcia et al 2000) Examined whether college students

learning styles and thinking styles were interrelated and If

these could predict academic achievement. They study revealed

moderate relationship between both types of styles and that

students’ academic achievements was related to students thinking

styles.

(Johnson Johnson 2006) In their study on learning style and

preference for online learning support found that among the four

index of learning styles of students (active-reflective, visual-

verbal, sequential-global, sensing-intuitive) active learners

expressed preference for face to face study groups rather than

online study and for online quizzes rather than pencil and paper

quizzes. Visual learners expressed preference for online quizzer

rather than online study groups.
